Chapter 128

“Why you?” Maisy stood up angrily. She never expected Skylar to be so rude. Sadie, who had originally pretended to be ill, still had a rosy flush on her face. Her expression soured at Skylar’s words.

“Enough! This is disrespectful! Do you even know what you’re saying?” Jeffrey scolded angrily.

“Your mother is ill, and not only do you not care, but you speak without thinking. Who taught you to act like this?” Peter asked sternly.

Kenny wanted to say something but remembered Skylar’s earlier words. Looking at his family, he wondered if Skylar had always been treated so poorly.

Skylar’s cool, emotionless gaze swept past the Williamses and settled on Sadie. “I thought you called me back because your conscience had finally kicked in. I thought you were planning to let me inherit the family fortune.”

The Williams family was also being suppressed by the Martin Group. Their company faced imminent further diminishment. Such a small inheritance wasn't worth her attention.

Sadie, overcome with anger, was unable to speak. She started coughing violently.

“Mom,” Maisy rushed to pat Sadie’s back gently.

“The Williams family fortune is none of your concern,” Samuel said through gritted teeth. Their family’s assets included a share for Maisy; they wouldn’t leave anything for Skylar.

Although Jeffrey was also upset, he maintained his composure. “Samuel, that’s enough.”

Skylar slowly curved her lips into a smile. She looked at them, feeling no attachment. They weren’t worth anything to her.

“Keep your family assets hidden away from me. I wouldn’t want to take some petty assets,” Skylar said mockingly.

Peter watched Skylar intently, noticing her changed attitude and genuine disgust. His face soured. “What is your relationship with Paul?”

“Are you prying a bit too much?” Skylar countered.

“I’m your older brother. I have a right to know who you are involved with,” Peter said. In a company, employees would fear Peter's anger.

But Skylar merely raised an eyebrow. “Where were you a few days ago when the Williams family was busy buying trending searches to destroy me? Did you fall into a hole? Or did you go deaf? Or blind? Now you act like my brother? Isn’t that despicable?”

Peter’s face turned ashen. “Do you realize what you are saying? If you had acknowledged your mistakes and apologized, all could have been forgotten. You could have moved back in and remained part of the family. But since your return, what have you done? You haven’t admitted your mistakes; instead, you’ve opposed us at every turn and spoken without restraint. Don’t forget how you tried to ingratiate yourself with us initially. Now, do you want to throw all that away?”

“Enough, Peter, you should shut up as well,” Jeffrey scolded. He then turned to Skylar. “There were misunderstandings on both sides. You are my daughter. No matter how many mistakes you’ve made, I can forgive you. But now, can you hold back your words a bit? Come over and see your mother. She’s become ill because she missed you.”

Skylar sensed they were softening their approach.

“Skylar, come here and let me look at you. You’ve only been away for a little over a month. How have you lost so much weight? Is life tough outside? Come home,” Sadie said with concern. Her eyes were red.

Before, Skylar might have believed her. Sadie had used more convincing tactics to make Skylar endure feeling unwell and go to the hospital for blood tests.

Skylar stood at the door motionless. A message from Paul popped up on her phone. He had taken photos of some items her parents had kept and wanted her to look at them.

While checking the photos, Skylar said indifferently, “Don’t play games with me. I’m tired of your dirty tricks. They’re almost always the same. Just tell me what you want.”
