Stephen knew Simona’s heart belonged to him, but he intended to secure her completely today.

“I like everything you ordered, so let’s stick with that,” Stephen said. Simona nodded. “Alright.”

After a few minutes, Simona took a sip of water, gathered her courage, and said, “Stephen, can we talk?” She’d given it much thought and realized she might have been too impulsive before.

Stephen nodded, gazing at Simona gently, as if she were the only person in the world. “What do you want to talk about?”

“You know I don’t have many close family members besides my brother. And I still don’t know much about your family. Can you tell me about them?” Simona attempted a casual tone.

She’d become cautious, a stark contrast to her former self. She used to speak her mind freely, especially around Caleb, but now, with Stephen, a newfound timidity had emerged. It was clear she cared deeply.

Stephen’s expression shifted. He hadn’t anticipated this question. He’d been guarded about his family, creating a subtle distance that discouraged inquiries. Simona's initiative surprised him.

He came from a large, impoverished family. “My parents are farmers. They’ve never been to a big city, not even Jipsburg, likely due to the cost of travel. My three older sisters supported my education and haven’t married yet. Now that I can earn money, they can focus on their own lives,” he explained calmly. He knew he couldn't keep this hidden forever and felt Simona was prepared.

Simona nodded. “Your parents and sisters have indeed worked hard.”

Stephen’s eyes reddened. “Simona, being with me might lead to ridicule from your friends. My background is humble. I’ve been considering this: I shouldn’t be a burden. Your brother opposes our relationship, and perhaps he’s right. I’ve decided… we should break up. I don’t want you to regret this later. I don’t want our love to be compromised.”

He’d used this “retreat to advance” tactic in high school, often successfully.

Simona’s eyes widened. “Why are you talking about breaking up? I just wanted to know more about you. Stephen, from the moment we began this relationship, I was serious, and I believed you were too.”

“Simona, what if your brother insists we break up? He may never approve,” Stephen pressed, seeking a commitment from her.

Simona shook her head. “No. Once my brother understands you, he’ll accept you. These aren’t insurmountable obstacles, Stephen. I’ve always believed you’re strong and independent.”

Stephen frowned, surprised by her resolute stance. “Simona, I’m saying what if.”
