Chapter 1334
Skylar never expected Joe to suddenly kiss her while they were talking. The unexpected kiss hit her like a storm, leaving her momentarily stunned; the brush of their lips sent her mind reeling.
At first, she forgot to respond. She instinctively leaned against Joe's chest, feeling his warmth and the steady beat of his heart. This kiss was both intense and lingering, growing more passionate. Skylar wasn't the type to be overly dramatic; she understood the physical changes in Joe's body at that moment. He wanted to sleep with her.
Fortunately, Joe quickly regained his composure and lowered his gaze to study her. His breathing was heavy, and his deep-set eyes glinted like a starry sky, as if he wanted to devour her completely. He truly did. The urge was overwhelming, but his rational side made him pull back. It took Skylar a while to regain her breath.
“If I weren’t Joe, would you still want to sleep with me?” Joe murmured against her ear, his warm breath sending a shiver down her spine. His words felt like an invitation to share a dangerous descent into temptation.
Skylar blinked in surprise, then smiled. “I just said you are Joe.”
Joe didn't respond, but some of his physical reactions lingered. Skylar flushed with embarrassment. Being held like this made her feel a bit uneasy. Just as she was about to remind him, Joe's phone rang. He continued to look at her as he answered. “Wait for me to come back,” he said before hanging up without another word.
The phone call seemed to have tempered some of Joe's wild thoughts. He took a step back and released Skylar. “Wait for my call,” he said as he walked away.
Skylar was taken aback for a moment. It wasn't until Joe's car disappeared that she snapped back to reality, a smile creeping onto her face.
Skylar noticed Gloria wasn't in the living room when she arrived home. Just then, Veronica came down from upstairs. Skylar handed her the two freshly roasted chickens she had bought on the way home. They should have woken from her nap by now. Skylar immediately asked Veronica, “Is Grandma still napping?”
“Today, we had a guest, and Mrs. Martin Senior got a bit upset. She didn’t eat much for lunch and just fell asleep,” Veronica replied.
Skylar frowned. “A guest? Don't guests usually schedule their visits in advance? I didn’t know we were having anyone over today.” She was well aware of Gloria’s health. While both Gloria and Veronica pretended everything was fine in front of her, Skylar chose to play along to ease Gloria’s worry. But that didn’t mean she was oblivious to the situation. In recent years, guests were expected to call ahead. If Gloria was feeling well, she would meet with them; if not, she would politely decline.
Veronica nodded. “This guest didn’t call ahead. This person is someone you know—Rosa Reese. She came as Ned’s fiancée and started saying…” Veronica replayed everything Rosa had said, her frustration palpable. She had seen some shameless people, but never someone as brazen as Rosa.
“She actually dared to come here and make threats!” Skylar said, her expression growing cold and serious.
“Exactly! She’s clearly feeling insecure. To be honest, I was a bit doubtful about whether Ned was Mr. Martin. Now, I’m sure he is. Rosa knows everything. She just wants to stake her claim on him,” Veronica said angrily.
Suppressing her anger, Skylar instructed, “Let’s call the doctor to check on Grandma. I’m worried.”
“The doctor just left. Mrs. Martin Senior is fine. She just needs to rest well,” Veronica hurriedly explained.
Upon hearing that the doctor had come, Skylar felt relieved. “That’s good.” She decided that Rosa needed to face the consequences of her decision to visit Gloria unannounced.
