Chapter 17

โ€œHow much more would you give me?โ€ Skylar asked.

She was fine with working late. Theyโ€™d agreed she would leave work at 3:00 p.m., so an extra hour was acceptable. Finishing this job early would allow her to proceed with her next plan.

โ€œWhat about $100,000?โ€

A few days earlier, Daniel wouldn't have dared increase her pay. But after witnessing her restoration skills, he realized she surpassed any master in the industry. Heโ€™d already decided to recommend Skylar to the auction house after these two paintings.

Skylar considered it for a moment and agreed.

Caleb wanted to speak, but remembered Alexander's warning and remained silent.

At the Williams residence, Jeffrey returned from a business trip. When Sadie told him about her call with Skylar, he angrily threw his glass of water onto the table.

โ€œFine. Sheโ€™s insisting she never used the card I gave her? Iโ€™ll check her credit card records now! I wonder who gave her the guts to speak so rudely to her parents!โ€

โ€œShe didnโ€™t go to the hospital today. Sheโ€™s preventing Maisy from getting the blood she needs. Sheโ€™s a disobedient liar. I donโ€™t want to admit sheโ€™s my daughter!โ€

Sadieโ€™s head had ached since last night. โ€œI wonder where sheโ€™s living now. Sheโ€™s not at Janineโ€™s house.โ€

โ€œIf she gets into trouble, all of Jipsburg will know sheโ€™s our daughter. What if she embarrasses us? My head aches just thinking about it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll call her. Iโ€™ll get her to come home and apologize,โ€ Kenny said coldly.

He disliked Skylar, his biological sister, intensely. Sheโ€™d grown up in the countryside and didn't please their parents as well as Maisy.

โ€œItโ€™s all my fault. Mom, Dad, Kenny, please donโ€™t be angry,โ€ Maisy said, lowering her head.

Sadieโ€™s heart ached for Maisy. โ€œItโ€™s not your fault; itโ€™s Skylarโ€™s!โ€

Although Kenny had Skylarโ€™s number, heโ€™d never called her before. The call connected quickly.

Before Skylar could speak, Kenny scolded her: โ€œSkylar, you better come home and apologize to our parents and Maisy. Weโ€™re a family. We can forgive you for your mistakes.โ€

Skylar was driving. Slow-moving traffic indicated an accident ahead. Honking filled the air.

Kennyโ€™s voice further irritated her. โ€œYouโ€™re crazy,โ€ she shouted, hanging up. She rarely cursed, but found it effective against self-righteous people like the Williamses. They heard her, as sheโ€™d been on speakerphone.

Kennyโ€™s face fell. โ€œHow did her adoptive parents raise her?โ€

โ€œLook at her! Just look at her! Sheโ€™s so insolent! She makes me so angry!โ€ Sadie cried, pressing her throbbing forehead.

Jeffrey and Kennyโ€™s expressions were grim. Only Maisy was secretly pleased; everyone else was upset.

Suddenly, Jeffreyโ€™s phone rang.

โ€œMr. Williams, Iโ€™ve checked. There are no records of your supplementary card being used.โ€

โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

Jeffreyโ€™s assistant, believing there was a signal problem, repeated himself.

Jeffrey was incredulous. โ€œWas the card number wrong? How could there be no records?โ€

Sadie and Kenny turned to Jeffrey. Maisy, however, was secretly shocked. Sheโ€™d forgotten to prevent Jeffrey from checking Skylarโ€™s card!
