Chapter 188

“Bullshit! Your family’s business practices are immoral, and your character is unsavory. It’s no surprise you’ll go bankrupt. You’re just blaming Skylar for your own mistakes.”

Steven, usually soft-spoken, felt no need for cordiality with Kenny and his family. They didn't deserve it. He'd heard from Charles how despicably Kenny and Samuel had treated Skylar; it made his blood boil.

Kenny, displeased and embarrassed, retorted, “We’re not blaming her. Skylar and her boyfriend broke up because she found someone better.”

Steven's disbelief was palpable. “Has your whole family been brainwashed by Maisy? How thoroughly has she manipulated you? Can’t you think independently? Even if Skylar did retaliate, it’s because you pushed her to it. Don't contact me about Skylar again. I will never help you!”

He wondered what Skylar had endured with the Williams family. Their relentless pursuit suggested something suspicious. Who had she married? He decided to ask Skylar again, vowing to prevent further bullying. Christopher's ordeal was enough; it mustn't happen again.

Pushing Kenny away, Steven found a secluded spot. He was about to call Skylar when he received her message:

“Hey, Steven. When are you free? My husband will be back from his trip when you’re less busy. I’ll arrange a meeting. Don’t worry about me. I’ve thought this through. Once bitten, twice shy. I won’t be fooled again.”

The message eased Steven's tension. He reminded himself to trust Skylar and ignore Kenny.

After the confrontation, Steven returned to the lab, staring blankly at his instruments, unable to focus. He messaged Skylar again, but received no reply.

Peter mentioned the Williams Group's troubles in the family group chat; the Martin Group's attack was the root cause. How was Skylar involved with the Martin Group? If not Paul, then who?

Upon reflection, Steven's words rang true. Why did they so readily assume Skylar was manipulating them instead of acknowledging their own failings? The Williams Group had expanded rapidly in recent years. Perhaps they'd displeased the Martin Group somehow?

Kenny, having shared this thought in the group chat, faced immediate opposition from Samuel and Peter. Jeffrey deemed it impossible. They insisted Skylar was behind everything, claiming she sought their approval to settle down with them in Jipsburg. She was supposedly using manipulative tactics.

Now, Kenny hoped Skylar was responsible. If so, there might still be a chance to salvage the situation.

Later, Skylar examined a painting needing restoration, alongside Alexander. Examining it, Alexander remarked to Frank Doherty, standing beside him: "This painting is even more damaged in person than in the photos. It's a real test for the restorer."

He recalled being intimidated by such damaged, ancient paintings in his youth. Restoration was incredibly challenging; failure meant wasted effort and demanded immense patience.

Frank, with a solemn expression, explained, “This painting is an heirloom. It’s invaluable to me. Unfortunately, I damaged it through improper storage. By the time I realized the extent of the damage, it was already this bad. Money isn't a problem; I'll pay double if it can be restored.”

Clearly, the painting's significance far surpassed its monetary value.
