Chapter 208

Sadie unleashed a torrent of blame onto Janine, holding her responsible for the Williams family's misfortunes. In Sadie's view, had Janine properly raised Skylar, she wouldn't be someone's mistress instead of the Williams family heiress.

Janine was stunned. "You don't deserve to be Skye's mother! Instead of supporting her against false accusations, you only make things worse! Do you think everyone is as despicable as you?" she shouted.

Sadie, arms crossed, reacted instantly to Janine's outburst. Her hand flew up to slap Janine, but Janine was quicker. A sharp slap echoed, sending Sadie staggering backward, her hand to her cheek. Her disbelief was palpable, even through her sunglasses.

"Janine, have you lost your mind? How dare you hit me? Believe it or not, I'll tell Skylar you hit me!"

Janine, seething, sneered. "So what if I did? You're unfit to be a mother. I used to hope Skye would treat you better because you're her real family, but blood clearly means nothing. You're all worse than scumโ€”not worth an ounce of hope or respect!"

Sadie tried to retaliate, but Janine dodged the blow. "Janine! You're just a lowly worker! How dare you hit me?" Sadie's contempt was obvious. To her, service industry workers were beneath contemptโ€”cheap, low-status, bottom-of-the-barrel people. How could someone like that raise a decent child?

Janine scoffed. "I have nothing to be ashamed of in my work. But can you say the same about the Williams family's money? Don't act so high and mightyโ€”you haven't earned the right!"

She turned to leave. To Janine, they were from different worlds, irreconcilable. But Sadie wouldn't let her go easily. "Wait! Who said you could walk away? You still haven't told me who Skye's lover is."

Anger overriding reason, Sadie almost forgot her initial purpose. Janine raised her hand again.

"What do you think you're doing? I'll report you! Tell me who Skye is sleeping with, or you can kiss your job goodbye!" Sadie demanded.

"No one! I know my daughter. She'd never stoop to being someone's mistress. Skye earned her place on Mr. Gardner Senior's team herself. She doesn't need anyone's help," Janine declared firmly before stepping into the elevator.

Sadie attempted to follow but paused as a familiar socialite emerged. Frustrated, she retreated to a nearby cafรฉ.

She'd barely sat down when Maisy called. "Mom, I'm on the plane."

"Did you speak with Mr. Martin? What did he say? Will he help our family?" Sadie asked anxiously.

Unaware of Skylar's backer, the Williamses saw Joe as their only hope in Jispurg. Sadie desperately prayed Joe would fall for Maisy, solving their problems.

Maisy felt embarrassed. She struggled to confess that Joe was Skylar's backer. "Mom, I didn't see Mr. Martin. He's been very busy. I waited, but couldn't approach him without raising suspicion. I'm sorry; it's my fault."

"Have you spoken with Ms. Yancey? What did she say?" Maisy asked, her worry evident in her voice.
