Chapter 35

Christopher said into his phone, "Skylar wants to break up with me."

"Break up with you? But isn't she madly in love with you?" Maisy felt a sense of unease. Something must have happened to Skylar that she and Christopher didn't know about.

"I still don't get it," Christopher replied. "Could it be that she found out about our affair? If she did, I should break it off with her. Let's make our relationship official, Maisy."

"Christopher," Maisy countered, "we aren't in a relationship. We're just friends from college."

"So what if Skylar thinks we had an affair? She's just being paranoid." Maisy firmly drew a line between them.

Christopher slammed on the brakes. "B-But we had sex in a hotel room last week. Doesn't that mean we're seeing each other?"

Maisy replied bluntly, "It's only sex. We don't have a future together. Besides, my parents would never let me marry you. I'm not like Skylar."

She had simply enjoyed stealing Skylar's boyfriend. She wouldn't marry someone of a lower social standing.

Christopher gripped the steering wheel, his chest tightening. "You don't think I'm good enough?"

"You know Joe Martin, CEO of Martin Group? I'd gladly be your girlfriend if you had his social standing!" she said. "Since you don't, don't take this seriously. Win Skylar back; she needs to continue donating blood to me."

Maisy had never cared about Christopher's feelings. She wouldn't have been interested if he hadn't been Skylar's boyfriend.

After ending the call, Christopher gritted his teeth. Maisy's words reminded him he couldn't lose Skylar. He called her immediately, but she declined the call, as before. Panicked, he sent a text: "Babe, we're not breaking up. I don't agree to it. We'll talk when you're not angry."

He then called Amelia.

Ten minutes later, Skylar was driving home. She received calls and texts from Christopher, followed by a call from Amelia less than ten minutes later. Traffic was congested, so Skylar answered.

"Skye! I heard you and Christopher are fighting. Did he upset you? I've scolded him, and he knows he made a mistake. Please let him off the hook for my reputation's sake," Amelia advised, assuming a superior tone.

Skylar found this ridiculous. "Your reputation doesn't matter to me. Do you know why I answered?"

"What's wrong with you, Skye? You've never been this impolite," Amelia said, growing angry.

"I don't need to be polite. I answered because children learn from their parents. Christopher is a carbon copy of you—an even more skilled villain! You and your son are vermin!" Skylar shouted before hanging up.

Skylar had only learned the truth after her amputation in her previous life: Amelia was a mistress, and Christopher was an illegitimate child. That's why Skylar had never met Christopher's father.

Amelia glared at her phone. "If I hadn't seen you as useful, I wouldn't have let you date my son! Let's see who regrets this more!"

Skylar arrived at Galaxy Villa half an hour later. As she was about to enter, Caleb called.

"Skylar, I know an expert antique restoration team in Jipsburg that's hiring. Interested?"

"Are you talking about Alexander Gardner's team?" Skylar asked.

"Yep."

"I'll apply after I finish Mr. Zeller's work. Thanks, Caleb," Skylar said, hanging up and opening the door.

The villa was brightly lit. Joe stood at the stairs, staring coldly at Skylar.
