Chapter 355
She and Joe had to maintain appearances for the future. Joe looked at her intently and said, "Her mother died saving me. I'm taking care of her to fulfill her mother's last wish."
Skylar was surprised by his sudden explanation, momentarily speechless. "Yes," she finally replied, "that's right."
Fortunately, the restaurant served their food quickly. As the dishes arrived, Skylar ate, deliberately ignoring her troubled thoughts.
The food at the Taegu restaurant was delicious. She vaguely remembered Natalie bringing her there once.
After lunch, Joe had to return to his hotel for a video conference. Skylar went to a nearby beach.
That evening, Joe messaged Skylar, saying he couldn't have dinner with her. Jenny's condition had worsened; she'd been taken back to the operating room, and he'd gone to the hospital.
Skylar dined on the pedestrian street, enjoying the many snacks. She walked around, ate, and took several pictures.
She returned to the hotel around 10:00 p.m., but Joe hadn't returned. She packed her luggage, suspecting he wouldn't go to the airport with her the next day.
Around 2:00 a.m., Joe returned. He opened the door quietly, but Skylar, unable to sleep soundly, was awakened by the subtle sound. She looked at the door and asked, "You're back?"
"Did I wake you?" he whispered. "Go back to sleep. I'm going to shower." His low voice held a gentleness that belied the late hour. Skylar hummed, turned over, and slept peacefully.
About half an hour later, Joe got into bed, hugged Skylar, and kissed her lightly on the cheek. Skylar felt it.
Although she'd fallen back asleep, she gradually awoke, distinctly aware of him getting into bed. He must have thought she was asleep. His kiss…
Skylar's heart trembled. Perhaps she was overthinking. Soon, she heard Joe's steady breathing. Had he fallen asleep so quickly? If she hadn't witnessed his insomnia before, she might have suspected he was feigning it.
Lost in thought, she drifted back to sleep. Some people slept late and dreamt beautifully; others couldn't sleep as darkness fell.
At the Williams residence, Maisy's workout had just ended.
Kenny glanced at the clock. "It's 3:00 a.m. Let's sleep. We have to go to the hospital tomorrow morning."
With no one else home, they slept in the same room. Their recent intimacy fueled a strong desire for each other.
Maisy, back in bed after showering, was casually browsing Instagram when she saw Skylar's post. Her eyes widened as she saw Skylar sightseeing in Korel City.
"Look! Skylar's not in Jipsburg! She ignored us and didn't even go to the hospital to see Mom! She went to Korel City instead! She's so heartless and cruel!"
Initially tired and sleepy, Kenny looked at Maisy's phone. It was Skylar's Instagram; the first picture was clearly of a beach in Korel City. He felt a profound gloom.
"I thought she was just angry. We neglected her, so some tantrums were understandable, but I never expected her to disregard Mom's life and go on a trip!"
"Kenny, she hates me! Send her a message and tell her what you think!" Maisy suggested, rolling her eyes.
