Chapter 387

She had no feelings for him; he was only her bed partner.

On her first day back at work after her break, Skylar looked at her new assistant, Caleb, and found the task daunting. Mr. Gardner Senior had spoken to her that morning, asking her to mentor Caleb and help him learn about antiques. He mentioned that Caleb was a bit of a troublemaker who listened to no one but her and suggested she use him as free labor. Mr. Gardner Senior also assigned her another task: restoring a shattered porcelain vase.

Looking at the vase's fragments, Caleb felt a headache coming on. "It's all smashed up," he said. "Can it really be fixed? Is my grandpa trying to make things difficult for you?"

"Mr. Gardner Senior has never made things difficult for me," Skylar replied. "This level of breakage isn't serious. I can repair it."

Caleb was filled with admiration. "No wonder Grandpa says you're more capable than he was at your age. You can confidently say you can fix something this broken." He was even more smitten with Skylar.

An hour later, watching Skylar work up close, he marveled again. He thought he would never love anyone else. He blamed his father for not having him sooner. If he'd been born a few years earlier, he wouldn't have let another man get to Skylar first.

However, the more he watched, the more the restoration work, once boring, seemed interesting. Seeing Skylar quickly become engrossed in her work, he couldn't help but take his own learning seriously.

Chapter 397

Jeffery sat by Sadie's hospital bed, watching her sleep. His eyes showed no love. Sadie looked ten years older, with significantly more gray hair and wrinkles. Her skin was pale and dull, her brows furrowed even in sleep. Resentment emanated from her.

He hadn't visited in days; he didn't want to face her. The hospital informed him that day she could be discharged, so he came. Otherwise, he wouldn't have.

Things wouldn't be so bad if Sadie weren't so troublesome, but that wasn't the case.

Sadie was tormenting their children and herself, looking worse than he'd ever seen her in their years together. Kenny and the others sat behind him. Peter was handling the discharge paperwork.

"I don't know if Mom can adjust after coming home," Samuel said, scratching his head in frustration. "She's been calling for Skylar every day for the past few days. I don't know why, but she keeps asking to see her." He worried that this would continue daily, disrupting their home life.

Maisy sighed. "Maybe staying at the hospital was uncomfortable for her. Once she's home, she might get better. As for Skylar, she probably won't come to see Mom no matter what."

Suddenly, Sadie, still asleep, began crying and shouting. She reached out her hands as if grasping for something. "Noโ€ฆ Noโ€ฆ I was wrong! I know itโ€™s my fault. Skylar, itโ€™s all my fault. Please forgive me, okay?"

Jeffery jumped up.

"Mom's having another nightmare," Kenny said helplessly.

Jeffery's face darkened as he glared at the nightmare-ridden Sadie. "Why would she have nightmares?"
