Chapter 399

Joe decided he should bid on some items for Skylar to improve their relationship. He subtly nodded; they had a mutual understanding. A glance and a nod were all it took to communicate their intentions.

Gloria was pleased with Joe's response. She appreciated that he was looking out for his wife. Joe might not have noticed, but his attitude toward Skylar had changed recently. It was different from his previously staged affection, performed for Gloria's benefit. Now, there was a hint of genuine affection in his gaze towards Skylar. The extent of this affection was unclear, but it was definitely present.

Unaware of the silent exchange between Joe and Gloria, Skylar focused on the auction items.

Janet scoffed inwardly as she watched Skylar's serious attention to each piece. Despite her youth, Skylar possessed remarkable composure. Even if she lacked experience, her calm demeanor set her apart from many girls.

When a painting was presented, it sparked murmurs among the attendees. The artwork was by Viola, a well-known figure among Jipsburg's elite. Many had once queued, offering substantial sums for her art. A foreigner had previously purchased this particular painting and now offered it for auction.

Viola was renowned for her extensive knowledge of astronomy and geography, her ability to read people's fortunes, and her expertise in identifying and restoring antiques. Even the highly respected Alexander considered her a mentor. Viola's mastery of painting was unparalleled, though she rarely created original works, preferring to replicate and restore ancient paintings. This piece, however, was her only known original work. It had previously sold for a high price, making it highly valuable. After all, nobody knew Viola's current whereabouts, not even Gloria, who had once been close to her.

The auctioneer provided a detailed introduction to the painting, including its context. Gloria stared at the painting with teary eyes. It was a landscape painting featuring a figure resembling Viola from the back.

Janet exclaimed excitedly, "What a wonderful painting! If you don't bid on it, Gloria, I will!" She knew this painting would be a great bragging point among her friends, though she doubted she'd win against Gloria.

Tears welled in Gloria's eyes as she looked at the painting. She asked Skylar, "Skye, is this Viola's painting?"

She had never heard of Viola painting self-portraits or landscapes. She was skeptical, despite rumors that someone had purchased Viola's work. However, this Jipsburg auction house had built a strong reputation for authenticity over the years.

Skylar confidently replied, "No, Grandma, this painting isn't Viola's work. She only ever replicated ancient paintings and never painted herself or landscapes." Viola believed destiny should not be defied, having experienced much in life. Therefore, she refrained from creating original works, only replicating others' art.

"Not hers? Young lady, you should watch your words," Janet challenged. "The staff here confirmed it, and there are even witnesses attesting to its authenticity," she added, believing she had caught Skylar in a mistake.
