Chapter 454

"Your friend has likely possessed the artifact for some time," Skylar explained gravely. "Unfortunately, it's too late to save him. The artifact can only be destroyed after his death. Destroying it now would be fatal."

She, too, wished to save him, but the opportunity had passed. His friend had unknowingly sacrificed himself through prolonged exposure to the artifact.

The weight of the situation pressed down on Alexander. With a heavy sigh, he conceded, "Alright."

John, whispering to Joe, worriedly asked, "Aren't you concerned about being affected?"

Joe, ever nonchalant, replied coolly, "Worried? I'm with Skylar every day."

John cursed his question internally. Was it a subtle boast or a genuine expression of their relationship? Regardless, it was enviable.

Recognizing the potential benefits of a good relationship with Skylar, the shrewd strategist John formulated a plan. He recalled Steven's employment at a tech company in which he had invested. Rumors of funding shortages had reached him.

John decided to call the company's CEO tomorrow. After all, building good relationships was always a wise long-term investment.

Meanwhile, Alexander arranged for the artifact's return and planned to visit his friend in the next few days.

(The following section appears to be a note or instruction, and needs further context to be properly integrated):

If you carry it with you, it will help ward off the effects of this artifact. Make sure you spend time in sunlight each month; the influence of the artifact will fade within a month. Watch your diet and try not to get sick.

Skylar possessed a stockpile of amulets, courtesy of Viola. While Skylar could craft them herself, Viola had instructed her that creating them for others was subject to certain conditionsโ€”she couldn't create them unless the timing was right.

After her rebirth, Skylar received a letter from Viola indicating that the time had come. However, hesitant to risk Alexander's safety unnecessarily, she opted to give him one of Viola's pre-made amulets.

John, rubbing his nose, hesitantly asked, "What about us?" Though young, he wasn't eager for a shortened lifespan or even a minor illness.

Caleb, unconcerned, focused solely on Alexander's well-being.

Joe, a silent observer with one hand in his pocket, watched Skylar handle the situation. In these moments, she seemed to radiate undeniable charm.

Skylar addressed John's concern. "Mr. Gardner, you'll experience minimal effects. Prioritize outdoor activities and rest well. Nightmares might occur occasionally, but they're nothing serious. I can create amulets for you and Caleb."

Caleb puffed out his chest, a young man brimming with bravado. "Just nightmares? That's a breeze! A man like me fears nothing!"

His courage far surpassed John's, who responded with a stern look. "This blockhead!"

Skylar, relieved, retrieved two pre-made amulets from her bag. "Here, take these for now."

Turning to Alexander, she explained, "Mr. Gardner Senior, this artifact is attuned to its owner and must be returned."

"Return it?" Alexander's brow furrowed. How could he return something that might cost his friend's life?
