Chapter 518
Skylar looked at Joe, wondering what else he wanted to say.
โIf you ever find yourself in a similar situation, just say your husband is Joe Martin,โ he said.
Skylar suppressed a laugh. She hadn't expected Joe to be sochildish. This was her first experience with such an incident, and she doubted anyone would believe her, even claiming Joe as her husband, if it happened again.
Their eyes met briefly. Skylar noticed him look away.
โAlright,โ she agreed.
While Skylar showered upstairs, Joe received a call from Jeremy.
โI heard what happened earlier,โ Jeremy said.
โMr. Hughes Senior has been too lenient with Andrew. Tell him Skylar is my wife,โ Joe replied.
โYou want to make Andrew pay?โ Jeremy asked.
Joe scoffed. โAt least break his leg. He tried to sleep with my wife. I almost want to kill him.โ He realized, after saying it, how possessive he was of Skylar. The thought of another man desiring her was intolerable, perhaps because they were married.
โGood. Iโve had enough of Andrew. This is the perfect opportunity,โ Jeremy agreed readily.
Joe grunted noncommittally.
Just as Joe thought Jeremy was about to hang up, he spoke again. โHas Skylar ever mentioned anything about Nath?โ
โShe knows you cheated?โ Joe asked.
Jeremy took a drag from his cigarette. The ashtray overflowed with butts. His expression darkened further in the dim light. โNatalie found out. She wants a divorce.โ
โA divorce? Did you agree?โ Joe asked.
โI canโt. Has Skylar shared any of Nathโs thoughts with you?โ
Joe was silent for a few seconds. โSkylar and I donโt share secrets about others yet.โ
โAlright, I understand,โ Jeremy said before hanging up.
Joe looked at his dark phone screen, then tossed it aside. He glanced upstairs, his brow furrowing slightly. An inexplicable gloom hung over him, a heaviness he couldn't shake.
The next day, around noon, Skylar went to a restaurant, as per Annie's instructions. It was a quiet, upscale Wiscadian establishment, perfect for private conversationsโthe same restaurant theyโd used for their previous meeting. Annie had already texted that she was there ten minutes before Skylar arrived, and had even ordered their meals.
