Chapter 550

Skylar could tell from Joe's tone that he was furious. Lucas's back was stiff, while Skylar's face drained of color.

Annie waited a long time. After arriving home, Grayson and Sabrina bombarded her with updates every half hour, wanting to know Steven's response. Annie panicked when she received no news from Steven by 9:00 p.m.

What had Skylar told Steven? When Annie had left, Steven had said he would believe her. Was this a lie meant to console and placate her?

"Why does this feel off?" Sabrina said, doubting Steven. "Haven't you talked it out with him? Seeing as he likes you, he should believe every word you say."

Grayson, impatient with the waiting, said, "Annie, call him and ask about his decision."

Annie didn't need reminding; she wanted to call him herself. Phone in hand, she suddenly felt like backing down.

Sabrina noticed. Frowning, she said, "Are you scared to call him? Now's the time to test him. If he truly loves you, he'll believe you and help us out of this crisis. If he hesitates and waits to see if we can solve this ourselves, there's no need to waste time. We won't let you marry him."

If it were another man from a poor background, he would be desperately trying to appease the Silvers. If he could help them with their troubles, they would definitely support Annie's decision to stay with him.

"Sabrina's right," Grayson agreed, immensely dissatisfied with Steven.

Annie looked at them, unsure how to explain that their high-handed attitude wouldn't work on Steven. Steven's future could surpass the Silvers', and they might not even remain in Jipsburg.

Annie took a deep breath and called Steven. The phone rang unanswered. What was Steven doing? Was he still talking to Skylar?

"What? He's not answering?" Sabrina asked nervously, noticing Annie's distress.

Annie called again. Still no answer. Her heart sank. She called twice more. Steven wasn't working at this hour; he was on leave. And Skylar was meeting him tonight. Even if they had much to discuss, he shouldn't have kept her away.

Annie stood abruptly. "I'll go find him."

"Wait," Sabrina commanded, unwilling to let Annie go out at night. She worried Steven might take advantage of Annie, given his background. He didn't deserve Annie, nor the Silver name.

Grayson glared at Sabrina. "At this point, that shouldn't matter. Our sole focus should be resolving this crisis."

Annie understood her parents' concerns. She smiled wearily. "That's a misconception. He's not that kind of man. He's a good man."

Calming down, Annie realized she knew Steven well. The more she understood him, the more she feared losing him.
