Chapter 606

Charles had seen Joe before and recognized him as someone destined for success in the entertainment industry. However, a persistent, elusive memory hinted at a more personal encounter. Since they didn't know each other, Charles remained silent.

"Are you here with the crew?"

Joe's unexpected question startled Charles. He widened his eyes, glanced around, and, seeing no one else, belatedly nodded. "Yes."

He'd heard Joe was difficult to approach. This conversation with a stranger seemed contradictory. Charles wondered if Joe followed shows; he didn't seem like a television fan. Rumors of Joe's aversion to womenโ€”sending away those who approached himโ€”filled his mind. The thought sent goosebumps prickling his skin. He rubbed his arm, glancing at the elevator display. Why was reaching the sixth floor taking so long?

Joe, accustomed to others' apprehension, assumed Charles was afraid. Knowing Charles was Skylar's brother, he subtly softened his demeanor. "I'll cover the bill for your table."

Charles' eyes widened in shock; his goosebumps intensified as he averted his gaze. Joe was a major figure in Jipsburg Cityโ€”someone he couldn't afford to offend. He opted for avoidance.

"Oh, no. That's not necessary. We're being treated by the male lead actor today. I can't take the spotlight. But thank you."

After his awkward thanks, the elevator arrived. He darted out as soon as the doors opened.

Joe raised an eyebrow, puzzled. Was he truly that intimidating? He mentally resolved to ask Skylar about Charles's entry into the entertainment industry; he seemed like a frightened mouse.

Joe proceeded to the private room. The sight inside stopped him.

"Happy birthday!" Skylar greeted him with a radiant smile. "Surprised? Didn't expect it, did you?"

For a moment, Joe's expression faltered. An unfamiliar light, gradually warming his heart, appeared in his eyes as he looked at her.

"How did you know today was my birthday?" he asked, his gaze fixed on her.

Skylar grinned. "A bit of calculation."

She produced a delicate jewelry box. "Here's your birthday gift. I didn't have much time to prepare, so it's not perfect. I hope you don't mind."

Joe took the box stiffly. Skylar waited expectantly, but he hadn't opened it. "Go ahead, open it," she urged, eager to see his reaction. She cherished birthdays, remembering the varied giftsโ€”drawings, frogs, fishโ€”from her brothers, Steven, Charles, and Harvey, who always sang to her.

Joe unwrapped the box carefully. Inside lay a simple platinum ring.

"Take a look inside. Other rings didn't have the option for engraving, so I chose this one," Skylar explained, feeling nervous but hoping he appreciated her thoughtfulness.

Joe examined the engraving: a quaint flower pattern and the words "Happy Birthday."
