Chapter 683
Even though the date was written on the divorce contract, Natalie forgot it. She was a heartless woman, she thought.
“You’ve always been lost in your own world,” Jeremy said. “It’s not surprising you forgot.”
Tears welled in Natalie’s eyes. Jeremy glanced at the dishes on the table, a sudden alarm flaring in his mind. His gaze darkened, then flicked back to Natalie as if nothing had happened.
“You made dinner? It’s probably cooled. I’ll heat it up.”
Still in his suit, Jeremy rolled up his sleeves and carried the plates to the kitchen. Despite being a CEO, he treated her as an equal. He reheated the dishes expertly.
Tears streamed down Natalie’s cheeks as she stared at the cake, feeling foolish for crying. After Jeremy returned with the reheated food, she took his hand and turned, her eyes red-rimmed. “Jeremy, let’s get a divorce.”
Unable to meet his gaze, she ran upstairs. A few minutes later, she returned with the signed agreements, calmer now. “We can’t go on like this,” she explained. “Forcing ourselves to stay together will only hurt us both. Today, you merely took my hand, and I couldn’t bear it. I’m sorry, Jeremy.”
Jeremy’s lips pursed; he remained frozen. Natalie couldn’t read him. The moment he saw the divorce agreement, however, a menacing look crossed his face.
“I said we have the rest of our lives together. I can wait,” he repeated forcefully.
Natalie shook her head, tears welling. “We have many years ahead, yes. You’ll have many other choices, but I won’t be one of them. I can’t face you now, and I won’t be able to in the future. Jeremy, stop lying to yourself. We know each other well. We’ve become courteous strangers. Our dynamic is no longer that of a married couple.”
“It’s been less than a month, Nath,” Jeremy reminded her.
What difference could a month make? He knew she needed time to process what she’d seen.
Natalie inhaled deeply, pulled out her phone, and played a video from her chat with Annabelle, holding it up to Jeremy. She’d only seen it once, yet it felt like being torn apart again. She’d never wanted things to end this way. It was intolerable.
The moment Jeremy saw the video, his pupils dilated. He roared, “Nath! Turn it off!” He snatched her phone, veins bulging in his forearm.
Natalie sobbed silently, pleading, “Jeremy, we can’t go back. Let’s get a divorce!”
Jeremy flung her phone across the room and stared at her silently.
At Pearlhall Residence, Gloria checked the time. An hour had passed since Skylar’s call. “What kind of traffic could keep her this long? Even the busiest roads should have calmed down by now,” she said.
“I’ll call her,” Joe replied. It had been too long. He called twice, then a third time, but got no answer.
“What’s going on? Did Skylar text you?” Gloria asked, feeling inexplicable anxiety. She’d just done a full-body check. Would her symptoms return?
