Chapter 700
Because Skylar was there, the icy air around Joe subsided whenever he looked at her. Gloria knew Joe well; this wasn't surprising. Yet, the thought of Edwin filled her with regret. Edwin was destroying his future, engaging in evil acts. He had lost his mind, daring to do anything, even hurting Skylar.
Skylar observed Gloria's worried expression, fearing she would discover what happened and cause further problems. She added, "I'm fine. Don't worry about me. Grandma Viola said I'm a lucky person."
Gloria nodded, relieved. "Okay, okay. I'm glad you're alright."
They chatted for a while, but mindful of potentially disturbing Skylar, they soon left. Before departing, Gloria reminded Joe, "Take care of Skylar."
"Alright," Joe replied—his first words that day. Silence followed immediately. Gloria sighed and left.
Skylar noticed Joe's unusual behavior. Once alone, she planned to ask him what was wrong. Before she could, he asked, "Would you like to know who kidnapped you?"
Skylar's eyes flashed. "I've figured it out."
"Yeah. I'll handle it. They'll pay for what they did to you," Joe promised.
Skylar smiled. "Alright."
He felt terrible for her. Her calm demeanor and lack of further questions surprised him. "You didn't mention this in front of Grandma. Were you scared of putting us in a difficult position?"
Skylar nodded. "I know you guys won't let this happen again. You'll do anything to help. Talking about it will only cause you grief. There's no need."
Joe felt awful. He stood, leaned over Skylar, and apologized, "I'm sorry."
Skylar smiled. "It's not your fault."
After leaving the hospital, Gloria drove back to Pearlhill Residence. A while later, she made a call, her jaw clenched.
"Mom."
Edwin answered, his voice hoarse from a hangover and last night's tantrum. He knew why she was calling. She and Joe were extremely troublesome.
"I was aware you became an asshole growing up, but I didn't expect this. Skylar is an excellent girl. Joe's lucky to have her! Yet, you had someone kidnap and harm her? Have you gone mad? Joe will never see you as his father, nor will I ever admit you're my son! Yesterday was the last time anything like that happens. If you dare hurt Skylar again, I'll publish it in every major news outlet in Jipsburg. I'll cut ties with you!"
Gloria's words made it clear she loathed Edwin and was deeply disappointed in him and Molly.
