Chapter 757
The bidding continued relentlessly, reaching 35 million. Alexander frowned. "Isn't the young lady from the Ruell family unusually stubborn today?" he remarked. Thirty-five million far exceeded the item's true value.
Skylar glanced at Vera, whose smug smile betrayed a palpable sense of superiority. Despite her racing thoughts, Skylar felt her inherent inferiority to Vera. Thirty-five million was a substantial sum, and Vera didn't seem to believe Alexander would continue bidding solely to spite her. After the staff announced 35 million three times, Vera's smile broadened. Skylar averted her gaze. "I'll inform her grandfather later," Alexander murmured. Skylar nodded silently.
The auction continued. The next lot, a pristine antique painting, started at three million. Alexander had already acquired two controversial items, but he and Vera fiercely contested the painting. Vera ultimately secured it at an exorbitant price.
Skylar observed Vera's self-satisfied expression. Vera casually smiled at Skylar, her wealth seemingly inconsequential. She appeared to believe Skylar felt uncomfortable witnessing her extravagance. Relying on a man to achieve one's goals was foolish, and Vera intended to teach Skylar that lesson.
Alexander's expression darkened. "Mr. Ruell Senior was always frugal and cautious. He would never act so recklessly. Even if genuine, these items aren't worth this much. She's squandering money."
Skylar checked her phone. Joe had texted, wanting to visit Gloria that evening. She replied, "Sure."
As the auction concluded, Alexander left first. Skylar, heading to her car, encountered Vera again.
"Last time I saw you, you were with Rowan. Now, Mr. Gardner Senior. Skylar, you never cease to amaze me," Vera said coolly, her arrogance evident. Previously, Vera would have dismissed Skylar. Someone who sold herself for money seemed beneath her. But things had changed. Skylar and Joe's financial dealings unsettled her.
Bianca, standing beside Vera, sneered and scrutinized Skylar contemptuously. To Bianca, Skylar wasn't worth Vera's time, but Vera's interest continued.
Skylar offered a faint smile. "Surprised I dined with Rowan, or that I'm here with Mr. Gardner Senior? You're always so vague. Could you be clearer?"
"You!" Vera was taken aback.
"Vera is showing you great generosity by even speaking to you. Who do you think you are? Do you really think people don't see through you? How is a whore like you so shameless?" Bianca spat, her words a vicious attack.
