Chapter 766
Paul stood dumbfounded. "Fine," he said dismissively, waving his hand. "If you didn't get it, forget I said anything." He considered Jenny overly confident, believing herself too clever for anyone to see through her.
Jenny stood pale, her tears dried. Joe had already left, having advised her to focus on improving her job skills. She wondered if she truly lacked ability, given her position at Martin Group. Her skills, while not matching Paul's, were noteworthy; Joe simply didn't see her potential.
"Is Skylar the only one you care about now?" Jenny's voice was laced with bitterness. It wasn't just Skylar; Vera's return fueled her jealousy. Everyone else seemed to have a place in Joe's life, leaving her feeling excluded. But she refused to be sidelined.
Her phone rang. Seeing Molly's name, her demeanor shifted. "Mrs. Martin," she answered respectfully.
"Did you deliver the pen?" Molly asked, cutting to the chase.
"Yes, I placed it on Joe's desk a few days ago," Jenny replied.
"Good," Molly said, her voice softening. "I've always had a high opinion of you, and Joe's father is pleased. Do you have time for dinner today?"
An invitation from an elder was impossible to refuse. "Of course, Mrs. Martin," Jenny responded quickly. "I just finished work. I'll be right over."
Recalling the last time she met Edwin and Molly, she sensed their dislike for Skylar. This invitation signified a significant opportunity. Vera and Skylar were no longer her concern.
After hanging up, Molly instructed the staff to prepare dinner, then went upstairs. Knocking before entering, she announced, "Jenny will be here shortly."
Edwin looked up, anticipation in his eyes. "Good. Make sure everything is set."
Molly hesitated, uneasy. "Are you sure about this, darling?" She knew about Edwin's past relationships but had chosen to ignore them. However, entertaining women at home made her uncomfortable.
Edwin's expression darkened. "Sure about what?"
"She's a girl your son raised," Molly said, "still young, just graduated college, and clearly in love with Joe. If thingsโ"
Edwin interrupted impatiently. "Enough. No need to discuss it. There's no room for negotiation. Don't let anything go wrong."
"Alright," Molly sighed.
Skylar and Joe arrived at the Yancey residence. Janine was watching television.
"Steven and Charles came by," Janine said as they entered and slipped into slippers. "They bought groceries and cooked. Just heat them up."
Skylar smiled and went to the kitchen, finding several dishes prepared by Steven. They only needed to be microwaved. Joe followed.
"How do we heat this? I'll handle it," he offered, glancing at the unfamiliar microwave.
Skylar chuckled. "No need. I'll take care of it. This is an old model, and I'm used to it." Their new house would have newer, easier-to-use appliances.
