Skylar was momentarily dazed by Steven’s question. “Hide something from you? No, not at all.”

“Is there some issue between you and Joe? Did he mistreat you?” Steven asked seriously. Earlier that day, Steven had seen news reports about the Ruell family, including one detailing Vera and Joe’s apparently blossoming romance. The report featured recent photos and mentioned the Ruell family’s hospital was part of the Martin Group. Conspicuously absent was any mention of Joe’s marital status. Instead, the report speculated on an imminent engagement, suggesting their relationship had strengthened during this difficult time.

Skylar's confusion deepened. While she and Joe had disagreements, she usually shared only good news with her family, preferring to shield them from worry. She wondered why Steven was questioning her, even suspecting she might be missing some information.

“Joe and I are getting along well now. He hasn’t mistreated me, and it’s impossible for him to do so. Why are you asking this all of a sudden?” Leaning against the bed, she fought off lingering sleepiness. Steven had called from his room to avoid disturbing Janine. He knew Skylar well, having watched her grow up.

“You’ve been quiet in the group chat these past few days. You’ve only occasionally asked about Mom’s condition, which isn’t like you. Something must be on your mind. Skye, I’m calling to let you know that no matter what happens, you always have me to support you. I’m your brother, you know?”

Skylar’s nose tingled. Her voice thickened. “I’ve just been swamped with work lately, and it’s been tiring. Also, Joe has been abroad for the past few days. If you’ve seen any of those bizarre reports, don’t believe them.” The recent Ruell family troubles had undoubtedly fueled gossip; it wasn't surprising if Joe was somehow implicated.

Steven, sensing Skylar’s genuine tone, felt reassured. “Alright, take care of yourself. Don’t worry about Mom. I’ve arranged for someone to take care of her. You focus on your work. I’m not very busy lately, so I’ll stay home after work.”

“Thanks! Steven, you’re the best.”

“Of course!”

After the call, Skylar lost any desire to sleep. It was Saturday, and she'd stayed up late the previous night, waking over an hour later than usual. Without Steven’s call, she might have slept until 10:00 a.m.

After washing her face, she went downstairs to make breakfast. While eating, she searched for news about the Ruell family. The news mirrored what Caleb had shown her yesterday: a fire at the Ruell residence had hospitalized the three family members. However, much of the reporting focused not on the family's troubles, but on Joe and Vera’s relationship, speculating on their engagement and the business implications of their families' connections. Even Vera’s college was detailed. This portrayal emphasized a deepening relationship amidst the family crisis, weighing heavily on Skylar.

Just then, someone opened the door. She stood up as Joe entered.

He looked at Skylar and said, “It’s me.”

Slightly startled, Skylar noted Joe’s exhaustion; bloodshot eyes confirmed it.

“Did you just get off the plane?”

“Yeah.”

Joe strode towards her, removing his coat. His casual attire, a simple white T-shirt, made him seem less aloof, more like a typical college student.

“Do you have any plans for today?” he asked.
