Chapter 816

Skylar glanced at Joe before changing clothes. Ten minutes later, they were in the car. During the drive, Rowan called Joe, likely alerted by the hospital. Joe put the call on speaker.

Rowan said, โ€œDid you hear about Jennyโ€™s car accident? I just got a call from Apollo Hospital. They said they contacted everyone. Since youโ€™re her primary contact, I assumed they reached you first.โ€

Joe replied, โ€œYes, Iโ€™m heading to the hospital.โ€

Skylar gazed out the window, distracted. Feeling her distance, Joe took her hand. Skylar was surprised by his affection.

โ€œIโ€™m going to the hospital too,โ€ she said. โ€œYou go ahead. I wonโ€™t come. And by the way, Jennyโ€™s changed a lot since college. Youโ€™ve done enough for her.โ€

Rowan reflected on the past few years, realizing his obsession with Jenny had been foolish. Heโ€™d been young and impulsive, always wanting to protect the vulnerable. Jenny had seemed weak, prompting his protective instincts. He recalled seeing her from downstairs that day; the person seemed older, though difficult to discern clearly from his vantage point. Regardless, Jenny had secrets.

Joe calmly said, โ€œOkay, I understand.โ€

โ€œOne more thing,โ€ Rowan continued, โ€œThe Ruell family are also at Apollo Hospital. You might see them. Youโ€ฆ donโ€™t like to meddle, but I have to say, Skylar is a great woman. Thatโ€™s all. Bye.โ€

The call ended. Skylar was surprised by Rowanโ€™s compliment.

They soon arrived at Apollo Hospital, a large building with reporters at the entrance. Skylar put on her sunglasses, wanting to avoid attention; Joe followed suit. They went straight to Jennyโ€™s ward.

The extent of Jennyโ€™s injuries was immediately apparent, far more serious than the phone call had suggested. A doctor explained that she had injuries to her forehead and legs, a particularly severe leg wound resulting in a four-inch scar. The wound was deep, requiring rehabilitation to ensure she could walk again. The police had left about ten minutes prior after gathering information; the driver had fled, and the vehicle remained at large. Fortunately, Jenny's life wasn't in danger.

Seeing Jenny, Skylar decided against mentioning her earlier observation; it felt like kicking someone while they were down. Joe called Paul to handle follow-up matters. A short time later, Joe received a call and left the room, leaving Skylar to watch Jenny. The doctor had said Jenny would wake soon; her unconsciousness was attributed to anesthesia and concussion. Beside her pillow lay Jenny's nearly shattered phone, constantly displaying WhatsApp notifications and incoming calls.
