Chapter 850

Skylar was astonished that Pamela, whom she held in high regard, spoke to her so sternly. This wasn't a discussion; Pamela was forcing her hand. Vera felt her own arrogance crumble. Thinking of Skylar and Joe, she felt utterly helpless. She inexplicably recalled Joe's introduction of Skylar in the hospital elevator: "My wife."

Wife…

Were they married?

Pamela, catching Vera daydreaming, screamed, "Do you hear me?" Vera, jolted from her reverie, promised, "I understand the gravity of the situation. I know what to do. I won't let misfortune further engulf our family." Her assurance satisfied Pamela, who simply replied, "Alright."

Half an hour after dinner, Skylar's phone rang again. It was Vera. Skylar, strolling with Joe as dusk settled, answered. "Have you made your decision, Ms. Ruell?" she asked.

Vera's voice was calm. "My attitude was unacceptable. I apologize. I beg you to help us out of this crisis." Though brief, her words clearly indicated surrender. Skylar, not unforgiving, agreed. "I'll send you my account details."

"Alright."

After hanging up, Skylar turned to Joe, who had been watching her. "They agreed to my conditions. I'm heading to the Grimwood Residence now. You…"

Before Skylar could finish, Joe said, "I'll go with you."

Skylar started to speak, but realized her relationship with Joe wasn't the secret at risk—his was. So, she remained silent.

Vera transferred twenty million to Skylar. As the transaction cleared, her expression hardened. "I've never suffered such humiliation! Skylar, you'd better resolve our crisis. Otherwise, you'll regret this!" she hissed, biting her lip. Her disgust had curdled into outright loathing.

She then asked her doctor for a few hours' leave from the hospital, received permission, changed, and headed to the Grimwood Residence.

Skylar and Joe arrived shortly after. Denton and his daughter, Patricia Ruell, awaited them. Patricia was surprised to see Joe with Skylar and covertly observed them as she ushered them inside.

The Ruells all anticipated a union between Vera and Joe—an imminent engagement. Skylar's arrival with Joe, therefore, was unexpected. Before today, they knew nothing of Skylar, except that she was capable and highly regarded. Seeing her in person, they found her young and beautiful, perhaps even more so than Vera. However, Vera was more flamboyant; Skylar, while young, was reserved and humble.
