Chapter 933
As Joe was about to continue, someone called. His expression turned grave while he was on the phone. Skylar and Steven were silent.
Joe asked, "Is he dead?"
The person on the line responded inaudibly. Joe hung up and informed Skylar, "I'm going out."
"You've been drinking. You can't drive," Skylar reminded him.
Joe nodded. "Lucas is coming to pick me up," he replied.
It was likely an emergency, as Joe left immediately, leaving Skylar and Steven behind.
"Skye, take care of yourself and carry pepper spray wherever you go. Sometimes, you've got to be a little selfish. Don't interfere in other people's business," Steven said, his concern solely focused on Skylar's safety. He couldn't be bothered to consider others. He preferred she stay away from trouble if someone's greed had brought misfortune upon themselves.
Skylar, afraid of worrying Steven, said obediently, "I'll listen to you. I've already put pepper spray in my bag."
Steven's worry subsided. He checked his watch. "It's getting late. I'll tidy up the cutlery with you. Get an early rest tonight."
"Alright."
Half an hour later, Skylar received a call from Paul.
"Mrs. Martin, I've sent Lucas to pick you up from Galaxy Villa. Mr. Martin is injured. He's in the hospital now," Paul said hurriedly.
Skylar immediately asked, "How did it happen? What did the doctors say?"
"It's hard to explain over the phone. Mr. Martin didn't want me to inform you, but I thought you should know," Paul replied.
Skylar asked no further questions and went to change. Within twenty minutes, she arrived at Apollo Hospital, where Paul waited for her in the corridor.
"Mr. Martin is being stitched up. He was injured in multiple areas; two wounds were quite deep and bled severely," Paul explained, his brow furrowed. This was the first time he'd seen Joe so badly injured in his long career as his secretary.
Skylar solemnly asked, "How did he get hurt?" Did it have anything to do with the call he received?
Paul explained the events. The call had been from one of Joe's elderly relatives. Edwin and his cousin, Derek, had been at a club, accompanied by several women. A disagreement escalated into a brawl. Edwin beat Derek severely, and two of the women sustained broken legs. The club owner, knowing Rowan, contacted Joe. Joe arrived, immediately sending Edwin to the hospital. Derek, who had always resented Joe, believing him to be overshadowing his son, taunted Joe and Edwin. Another fight erupted. Just then, Derek's sons, Henry and Humphrey, arrived, intending to avenge their father. They attacked Joe, but he overpowered them. Everyone involved, except Joe, was sent to the police station after receiving medical treatment.
Skylar was amazed by the Martin family's dysfunctional relationships. The individuals shared a surname and family history, yet they were more ruthless with each other than with outsiders.
