Chapter 966

Natalie stepped outside to take the call, not wanting to disturb Hank, Austin, and Skylar at breakfast.

"Jeremy," she answered.

"I'm in Fachington. I need to see you today," Jeremy's voice was urgent.

Natalie wondered why he'd returned to Fachington so soon after he and Helena had left a few days earlier. Glancing back at the family still eating, she said quietly, "I can't meet you today. Skylar's here, and I need to be with her for the next couple of days. If it's important, let's discuss it over the phone."

"We can't discuss it over the phone. Where are you right now?" Jeremy pressed.

"I'm with Skylar. Jeremy, I think there's nothing more to discuss. The food's getting cold; I'm going to eat," Natalie said, attempting to end the call.

Jeremy interrupted sharply, "Wait, are you with Austin?"

"Yes," Natalie confirmed.

"I need to see you today, or there will be consequences you won't expect," Jeremy's voice was cold.

"Jeremy! What exactly do you want? I've said Skylar is here, and I want to spend the next couple of days with her. Why do you insist? We should have said everything last time," Natalie argued, increasingly confused by his persistence. Their last two meetings had ended badly; there were things she wanted to clarify, but words failed her. "Moreover, we're divorced, Jeremy."

Jeremy sighed. "I regret it. We shouldn't have divorced."

He'd said the same thing before. But, as she'd already explained, there was no remedy for regret. Their divorce was final. She'd downplayed the marriage's impact, but the hurt lingered. Natalie's eyes welled up. "I've already wished you and Helena well."

"Jeremy, there's nothing more to discuss. Things were settled at the divorce. I've moved on, and you should too. It wouldn't be fair to Helena otherwise. I need to go now."

Natalie ended the call without giving him a chance to respond. She stood by the door, battling her emotions, but Jeremy's words still resonated. After a while, she returned to the dining room.

Skylar looked up; Natalie's changed mood and reddened eyes were obvious. Skylar guessed the call had been from Jeremy; Natalie wouldn't have gone outside for anyone else. Only Jeremy could elicit such a reaction. Austin's gaze darkened slightly. Hank pretended not to notice.

Natalie sat down, her appetite for pancakes vanished. She managed a couple more bites before declaring, "I'm full." Skylar was nearly finished as well.

After breakfast, Austin and Hank accompanied them on a tour of the vast mansion, spending over two hours exploring its many rooms. They also picked fresh fruit from the orchard and visited a nearby scenic spot, enjoying their bounty.
