Chapter 987

Skylar didn't even glance at Joe as she left the bathroom. She changed clothes, grabbed her bag, and departed. Watching her go, Joe's face hardened. He muttered, "What a heartless woman!" He wondered if she planned to divorce him upon their return home, if their conversations had been meaningless. He echoed the common sentiment: women's words were unreliable.

While waiting for the elevator, Skylar encountered Vera exiting. Vera, surprised, lifted her chin, exuding an air of superiority. She seemed to believe she held all the cards.

"Skylar," Vera said.

Just as Skylar entered the elevator, she heard Vera. "Anything?" Skylar asked. Oblivious to the exposure of her schemes, Vera sneered, "Sometimes, it's better not to be too calculating. There's a vast difference between you and Joe. Even if you've momentarily changed his perception, it doesn't guarantee victory." Vera discreetly slipped a ring into her bag. She disliked Skylar's actions, questioning the lengths she'd gone to.

Skylar regarded Vera as if she were mentally ill. "If you're unwell, see a doctor. Don't spout nonsense." She entered the elevator. She'd previously dismissed Vera as arrogant, but now suspected mental instability. Vera, meanwhile, assumed Skylar had schemed to win Joe's affection. Skylar, however, had no interest in such machinations.

The elevator doors closed, cutting off Vera. "This is infuriating!" she exclaimed. Few people behaved like Skylarโ€”scheming yet impolite. Considering Skylar's manipulation of Joe, Vera felt pity for him. She retrieved the ring, placing it back on her finger, then knocked on the nearby guest room door. "Joe, it's me."

En route, Skylar received a call from Natalie. "Filming stopped, and Mr. Powell gave me the day off. Where are you taking wedding photos? I'll join you."

Skylar glanced out the window. "We're not taking more photos; yesterday sufficed. I'm going to a friend's; she needs help. I'll meet you afterward. How's your stomach?"

Natalie, recalling last night's events, wondered if Skylar knew about Joe and Vera. Skylar's voice betrayed nothing.

"It's better. Let me know when you're free," Natalie replied.

"Alright."

Afterward, Natalie felt down, worried Skylar's silence masked heartbreak. Vera, she knew, was formidable.

Austin approached. "Appointment with Skylar? Let me take you."
