Chapter 188 At the McGee Family.

A row of carriages stood at the entrance, led by an extravagant, spacious coach. The coachman set down the step stool and drew back the carriage curtain. Draped in an elegant fox fur cloak, Ferris emerged gracefully from the carriage. After being away from the McGee family for over a month, Ferris was desperate to return home. The moment he wrapped up his business, he rushed back without wasting a single moment, eager to see Athena again. With a gentle smile, Ferris called out softly, โ€œMy Atheny, Iโ€™m home.โ€

The butler rushed forward, both startled and overjoyed. โ€œMr. McGee, youโ€™re back?โ€ The servants bustled about, busily carrying Ferrisโ€™s belongings into the mansion. Without breaking stride, Ferris asked with concern as he walked, โ€œHow has Mother been these days?โ€ The butler beamed from ear to ear. โ€œMrs. McGee is in excellent health, all thanks to the medicine Miss Monson prepared for her. She hasnโ€™t had a single cough all year!โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s good to hear.โ€ Ferris maintained his composure, but the mere thought of seeing Athena again made his heart soar with joy. The butler noticed Ferris heading toward Galeโ€™s courtyard and kindly reminded him, โ€œMr. McGee, are you going to see your mother?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Ferris confirmed. โ€œIโ€™m afraid youโ€™ve just missed them, Mr. McGee,โ€ the butler replied with regret. โ€œMrs. McGee has taken Miss Monson to Spring Garden for the princessโ€™s party.โ€ Ferris halted in his tracks, his brows knitting together. โ€œPrincess Lizzieโ€™s party?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ the butler affirmed. A sudden unease flashed through Ferrisโ€™s mind, followed by a dull, throbbing pain in his chest. โ€˜Why do I feel like something terrible is about to happen?โ€™ he thought. He clutched his chest, panic flickering in his eyes. Ferris thought anxiously, โ€˜Whyโ€ฆ why does my heart feel so heavy? Itโ€™s as if some terrible disaster is unfolding right now!โ€™

Seeing this, the butler rushed forward and supported him anxiously. โ€œMr. McGee, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked. Ferris shook his head vaguely. โ€œJust travel fatigue, I suppose.โ€ โ€œMr. McGee, perhaps you should go back and get some rest,โ€ the butler advised gently.

Ferris shook his head. โ€œNo, Iโ€™ll go to Spring Garden to fetch Mother and Athena myself.โ€ All he wanted now was to see Athena as soon as possible; he couldnโ€™t wait another second.

After taking a few steps, Ferris turned back and instructed the butler, his voice brimming with excitement. โ€œStart decorating the mansion at once. In two days, Iโ€™ll be marrying Atheny.โ€ The butlerโ€™s jaw dropped in astonishment, then he immediately broke into an ear-to-ear grin. โ€œCongratulations, Mr. McGee! This day has finally arrived!โ€ The surrounding servants all knelt in unison, showering Ferris with congratulations. Ferrisโ€™s face lit up with a smile. โ€œMake sure the place looks perfect. As soon as Athena returns, Iโ€™ll propose to her myself.โ€

โ€œRest assured, Mr. McGee,โ€ the butler declared, thumping his chest proudly. โ€œLeave it to me. I guarantee Miss Monson will be absolutely delighted!โ€

The joyous congratulations from the servants eased Ferrisโ€™s unease. With renewed determination, he strode purposefully toward the entrance and climbed back into the carriage. โ€˜Atheny, Iโ€™m coming for you,โ€™ Ferris thought urgently.

Wade was gasping for breath, while Athena lay beaten to a pulp, her flesh torn and bleeding. With a vicious grin twisting his face, Wade advanced and began tearing at Athenaโ€™s clothes. Athenaโ€™s bloodied hand suddenly clamped onto his wrist with surprising strength.

Wade was astonished by Athenaโ€™s tenacity. Even after being beaten to within an inch of her life, she still had the strength to fight back. โ€œMr. McGeeโ€ฆโ€ Tears rolled down Athenaโ€™s cheeks as she gazed up at Wade, her eyes full of pitiful desperation. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ have mercyโ€ฆโ€ Wadeโ€™s eyes widened in shock as he thought, โ€˜Athena is actually throwing herself at me!โ€™ A smug sense of triumph swelled in his chest. โ€˜Sure enough, thereโ€™s no woman I canโ€™t conquer,โ€™ he thought, his smugness swelling uncontrollably.

Seeing Athenaโ€™s delicate figure beneath her tattered clothes, Wadeโ€™s Adamโ€™s apple bobbed rapidly as he swallowed hard. Wade sneered, โ€œIf youโ€™d just behaved like this from the start, do you really think I wouldโ€™ve needed to hit you?โ€ Wade tore off his clothes in a lustful frenzy, pounced on Athena, and began yanking and ripping at her garments in a desperate, animalistic rush. Just as Wade pinned Athena beneath him, an icy blade instantly slit his throat. Blood gushed forth, splattering across Athenaโ€™s face and body. She watched as Wade clutched his throat, making desperate, choking sounds while blood kept bubbling from his mouth.

Athenaโ€™s lips curled into a satisfied smile. She spat through bloodied teeth, โ€œScum like you doesnโ€™t deserve to live. Rot in hellโ€ฆโ€ The hairpin slipped from Athenaโ€™s fingers as she slumped against the wall. With cold detachment, she watched as Wade convulsed before her, until he finally went still. Athenaโ€™s victorious smile dissolved into silent tears, indignant resentment burned within her. She thought, โ€˜Why does fate always play such cruel tricks on me, just when I think I might finally have a peaceful life? Happiness is like sand slipping through my fingers; no matter how tightly I try to hold on, it always slips away. If I dieโ€ฆ what will Ferris do?

We swore weโ€™d share our lives togetherโ€ฆ. But I donโ€™t regret my decision. Only blood can wash away the disgrace Ferris has suffered.

Just then, a commotion erupted outside. โ€œLet us see who dares to commit such disgraceful acts at my royal party!โ€

The door was violently kicked open, and a swarm of noble ladies came pouring in from outside.

Piercing screams erupted, nearly bursting Athenaโ€™s eardrums. No one could have anticipated the gruesome scene that awaited them inside the room.

Wade collapsed in a pool of blood, his throat slit open. His wide, unseeing eyes stared blankly, his face twisted in eternal resentment.

Athena leaned limply against the corner, her entire body covered in wounds and bruises. Her disheveled hair dripped with blood.

Her face was deathly pale, utterly drained of color, with hollow, emotionless eyes. Those numb, chilling eyes stared at everyone like a vengeful specter.

Athenaโ€™s hollow stare sent chills down everyoneโ€™s spine, and the crowd recoiled in terror, each person stumbling back a few steps.

โ€œGood heavens!โ€ Lizzie shrieked dramatically. โ€œAthena, how could you kill Mr. McGee?โ€

Lizzieโ€™s eyes gleamed with malicious delight as she looked at Athena. It was as if she hadnโ€™t expected Athena to hand her such a perfect gift. This was more than she could have hoped for.

โ€œAthenaโ€ฆโ€ Gale pushed through the crowd with difficulty and stepped into the chamber. Gale let out a piercing scream and flung herself toward Athena.

Galeโ€™s hands trembled as she reached out, desperate to comfort Athena but afraid of causing her more pain. Galeโ€™s hands trembled uncontrollably as tears streamed down her face. With a panicked look, she cried out, โ€œWhat happened here? Oh my god, what on earth is going on?โ€

Athenaโ€™s eyes were empty, but her mind was razor-sharp. At this moment, she absolutely couldnโ€™t afford to be associated with Gale. Otherwise, Wadeโ€™s death would inevitably drag down the entire McGee family.

Athena pushed Gale away, her expression icy. โ€œWhy pretend to care, Mrs. McGee?

What happens to me is none of your concern.โ€

Gale was no fool. She instantly grasped Athenaโ€™s intention.

Sheโ€™s cutting ties with me to shield the McGee family from any trouble, Gale realized, her heart aching.

Gale felt her heart shatter. This is all my fault. I failed to protect Athena, and now sheโ€™s suffering because of me. If I were to distance myself from Athena at a time like this, could I even call myself human? she thought in anguish.

She said, โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid, Athena, donโ€™t be scared. I promise Iโ€™ll save you, I swear I will.โ€

Before Gale could finish, Lizzie abruptly cut her off, her voice sharp and accusing. โ€œMrs. McGee, what are you saying? Are you trying to cover up for a murderer? Everyone here saw it with their own eyes that Athena killed Wade.

Thereโ€™s no way she can get away with this!โ€
