Chapter 104: The Parliamentary Library

Isolde smiled. โ€œHeโ€™s different.โ€

Doug looked at Clark indifferently. Seeing that his eyebrows were straight and he didnโ€™t look like someone with ulterior motives, Dougโ€™s opinion shifted slightly. โ€œWhat are you going to do with your so-called fiancรฉ?โ€

Isolde said, โ€œCanโ€™t you handle him for me?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s quite a stubborn guy,โ€ Doug said.

โ€œStubborn? I wonder how stubborn he can be. Canโ€™t you just give him a few good beatings?โ€ Isolde said indifferently.

Clark was stunned. โ€œIsolde, didnโ€™t you just say you would tell him honestly if you donโ€™t like him? Why would you want to beat him? You canโ€™t beat him.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t beat him?โ€ Doug widened his eyes. โ€œKiddo, do you know who he is? Listen to what you said. Do you seriously think heโ€™s here to propose? Heโ€™s Isoldeโ€™s sworn enemy in Belleview Manor. He almost took Isoldeโ€™s life.โ€

Clark looked at Isolde in shock. โ€œReally?โ€

Isolde nodded. โ€œYes, itโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œBut that day, the servants said he was sincere. He knelt before Grandmother and begged her to marry you to him. But why would he want to marry you if youโ€™re his sworn enemy?โ€ Clark couldnโ€™t understand.

Isolde looked at him. โ€œClark, have you seen anyone propose to a girl without a ring or flower? He came with nothing. He just barged in and knelt to propose. Can you believe that? Who would say in front of so many outsiders that I was engaged to him and had slept with him?โ€

Clarkโ€™s eyes blazed with anger. โ€œSo, he came to cause trouble? How dare he!โ€

โ€œOf course, heโ€™s bold, but he didnโ€™t come here alone. Someone invited him,โ€ Isolde said indifferently.

Clark was stunned for a moment but didnโ€™t ask further. If someone had invited that man to humiliate Isolde, he could guess who it was.

Doug looked at Clarkโ€™s expression and nodded in satisfaction. โ€œIt seems heโ€™s indeed different.โ€

Isolde said, โ€œMaster, I brought Clark here today because I want you to arrange a position for him in Southern Watch or any department in the High Court of Parliament.โ€

Clark suddenly looked up at Isolde. What? She had never told him what she was thinking.

โ€œI appreciate your kindness, Isolde, but Grandmother definitely wonโ€™t allow it,โ€ Clark said, unhappy because he knew it was impossible. He knew his grandmother would disagree; she wanted him to help in the shop and the manor.

Of course, he wanted it, even in his dreams. Didnโ€™t I pursue higher education to become an official and do something big?

Doug looked at him and asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s your degree?โ€

โ€œHe got a Masterโ€™s Degree,โ€ Isolde answered for him.

Doug said, โ€œIf youโ€™re not afraid of starting from the bottom, you can work as the chief librarian in the Parliamentary Library.โ€

Clarkโ€™s eyes widened. The Parliamentary Library? I can enter the Parliamentary Library? Not to mention working as a librarian, being a clerk was something he dared not even dream of.

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ After Clark recovered from his shock, he panicked. He knew this might be his only chance in this life. If he didnโ€™t seize it, he would be mediocre for the rest of his life.

Isolde said, โ€œThereโ€™s no hurry. Go back and think about it.โ€

Clark was silent for a long time before he stood up and bowed to Doug. โ€œThank you for your consideration, Mr. Becker. I need to go home and seek Grandmotherโ€™s approval.โ€ He knew they would tell him to reject the offer. Neither Prudence nor Priscilla would let him stand out. That was something he had known for a long time.

Doug patted his shoulder. โ€œYoung man, youโ€™re over twenty years old. You can decide your own life.โ€

After he finished speaking, Doug ordered someone to bring Anthony out. Indeed, Doug had beaten Anthony up; it could be seen from the fist marks on Anthonyโ€™s face.

Anthony stood stubbornly, staring at Isolde. Isolde sat in the pavilion and looked at him. โ€œI thought weโ€™d settled our grudge in Windermount. I didnโ€™t expect you would still want to harm me even after I returned to Argentum for two years.โ€

Anthony glared at her. His face was darker than the rich kids in Argentum, but he looked healthy. Even though he had been beaten black and blue, one could still see the vitality a man should have.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to harm you. Believe it or not, itโ€™s up to you. I want to marry you,โ€ Anthony said suddenly, shocking everyone.

Isolde smiled. โ€œReally? Didnโ€™t Prudence tell you to come here? By the way, how did you come to Argentum? In just a few days, you came from Windermount to Argentum and happened to appear on the day of the banquet. Isnโ€™t that premeditated?โ€

Anthony said, โ€œItโ€™s been three months since I came to Argentum, but I havenโ€™t found you. Before I came, I asked the people in Belleview Manor which family you were from, but they told me nothing. I could only look for you like finding a needle in a haystack. Only a few days ago, when I met Collin on the street, I finally knew you were Lady Isolde in the Dukeโ€™s estate. Priscilla brought me in when I came to the Dukeโ€™s estate to look for you. She said I could marry you if I followed her instructions.โ€

Isolde sneered. โ€œWhat you said is reasonable. If I didnโ€™t know you always hated me, I would have believed what you said.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter if you believe me or not. I only want to marry you. I wonโ€™t leave unless I marry you,โ€ Anthony said stubbornly.

Doug stared at him for a long time. As Southern Watchโ€™s head for many years, he was always perceptive about people. When Anthony spoke, his eyebrows remained unmoved, and so did his eyes. There was no unnecessary expression or small actions on his face. Instead, he just gazed at Isolde with passion in his eyes. That look was too familiar.

โ€œAlright, you leave, and I will let it slide. There is never an end to taking revenge,โ€ Isolde said, unimpressed.

โ€œI wonโ€™t leave unless you marry me.โ€ Anthony took a step closer but was blocked by Doug. He could only step back unwillingly.

โ€œYou canโ€™t beat me, Anthony. Even your father lost to me. Do you still want to go against me?โ€ Isolde was angry. At first, she thought she would teach him a lesson and forget it. She did not expect him to be so stubborn. Was he out of his mind?

โ€œI wonโ€™t fight with you. I want to marry you.โ€ Anthony lowered his eyes, his voice softening. โ€œI promise I wonโ€™t go against you again. You can bully me. But I wonโ€™t wrong you. I swear.โ€

Isolde was stunned. โ€œWhat nonsense are you talking about?โ€

Dougโ€™s attitude immediately improved. He pulled Anthonyโ€™s wrist and let him take a step forward. He took a closer look but was not entirely satisfied. However, his expression softened considerably. โ€œYoung man, you love Isolde, donโ€™t you?โ€

Anthony boomed, โ€œI want to marry her.โ€ His swollen face turned exceptionally red.

This time, even Isolde believed him. However, she was at a loss. Other than fighting, what else did I have to do with Anthony? What did I do wrong to make him fall for me?
