Chapter 104: The Parliamentary Library
Isolde smiled. โHeโs different.โ
Doug looked at Clark indifferently. Seeing that his eyebrows were straight and he didnโt look like someone with ulterior motives, Dougโs opinion shifted slightly. โWhat are you going to do with your so-called fiancรฉ?โ
Isolde said, โCanโt you handle him for me?โ
โThatโs quite a stubborn guy,โ Doug said.
โStubborn? I wonder how stubborn he can be. Canโt you just give him a few good beatings?โ Isolde said indifferently.
Clark was stunned. โIsolde, didnโt you just say you would tell him honestly if you donโt like him? Why would you want to beat him? You canโt beat him.โ
โCanโt beat him?โ Doug widened his eyes. โKiddo, do you know who he is? Listen to what you said. Do you seriously think heโs here to propose? Heโs Isoldeโs sworn enemy in Belleview Manor. He almost took Isoldeโs life.โ
Clark looked at Isolde in shock. โReally?โ
Isolde nodded. โYes, itโs true.โ
โBut that day, the servants said he was sincere. He knelt before Grandmother and begged her to marry you to him. But why would he want to marry you if youโre his sworn enemy?โ Clark couldnโt understand.
Isolde looked at him. โClark, have you seen anyone propose to a girl without a ring or flower? He came with nothing. He just barged in and knelt to propose. Can you believe that? Who would say in front of so many outsiders that I was engaged to him and had slept with him?โ
Clarkโs eyes blazed with anger. โSo, he came to cause trouble? How dare he!โ
โOf course, heโs bold, but he didnโt come here alone. Someone invited him,โ Isolde said indifferently.
Clark was stunned for a moment but didnโt ask further. If someone had invited that man to humiliate Isolde, he could guess who it was.
Doug looked at Clarkโs expression and nodded in satisfaction. โIt seems heโs indeed different.โ
Isolde said, โMaster, I brought Clark here today because I want you to arrange a position for him in Southern Watch or any department in the High Court of Parliament.โ
Clark suddenly looked up at Isolde. What? She had never told him what she was thinking.
โI appreciate your kindness, Isolde, but Grandmother definitely wonโt allow it,โ Clark said, unhappy because he knew it was impossible. He knew his grandmother would disagree; she wanted him to help in the shop and the manor.
Of course, he wanted it, even in his dreams. Didnโt I pursue higher education to become an official and do something big?
Doug looked at him and asked, โWhatโs your degree?โ
โHe got a Masterโs Degree,โ Isolde answered for him.
Doug said, โIf youโre not afraid of starting from the bottom, you can work as the chief librarian in the Parliamentary Library.โ
Clarkโs eyes widened. The Parliamentary Library? I can enter the Parliamentary Library? Not to mention working as a librarian, being a clerk was something he dared not even dream of.
โIโฆโ After Clark recovered from his shock, he panicked. He knew this might be his only chance in this life. If he didnโt seize it, he would be mediocre for the rest of his life.
Isolde said, โThereโs no hurry. Go back and think about it.โ
Clark was silent for a long time before he stood up and bowed to Doug. โThank you for your consideration, Mr. Becker. I need to go home and seek Grandmotherโs approval.โ He knew they would tell him to reject the offer. Neither Prudence nor Priscilla would let him stand out. That was something he had known for a long time.
Doug patted his shoulder. โYoung man, youโre over twenty years old. You can decide your own life.โ
After he finished speaking, Doug ordered someone to bring Anthony out. Indeed, Doug had beaten Anthony up; it could be seen from the fist marks on Anthonyโs face.
Anthony stood stubbornly, staring at Isolde. Isolde sat in the pavilion and looked at him. โI thought weโd settled our grudge in Windermount. I didnโt expect you would still want to harm me even after I returned to Argentum for two years.โ
Anthony glared at her. His face was darker than the rich kids in Argentum, but he looked healthy. Even though he had been beaten black and blue, one could still see the vitality a man should have.
โI donโt want to harm you. Believe it or not, itโs up to you. I want to marry you,โ Anthony said suddenly, shocking everyone.
Isolde smiled. โReally? Didnโt Prudence tell you to come here? By the way, how did you come to Argentum? In just a few days, you came from Windermount to Argentum and happened to appear on the day of the banquet. Isnโt that premeditated?โ
Anthony said, โItโs been three months since I came to Argentum, but I havenโt found you. Before I came, I asked the people in Belleview Manor which family you were from, but they told me nothing. I could only look for you like finding a needle in a haystack. Only a few days ago, when I met Collin on the street, I finally knew you were Lady Isolde in the Dukeโs estate. Priscilla brought me in when I came to the Dukeโs estate to look for you. She said I could marry you if I followed her instructions.โ
Isolde sneered. โWhat you said is reasonable. If I didnโt know you always hated me, I would have believed what you said.โ
โIt doesnโt matter if you believe me or not. I only want to marry you. I wonโt leave unless I marry you,โ Anthony said stubbornly.
Doug stared at him for a long time. As Southern Watchโs head for many years, he was always perceptive about people. When Anthony spoke, his eyebrows remained unmoved, and so did his eyes. There was no unnecessary expression or small actions on his face. Instead, he just gazed at Isolde with passion in his eyes. That look was too familiar.
โAlright, you leave, and I will let it slide. There is never an end to taking revenge,โ Isolde said, unimpressed.
โI wonโt leave unless you marry me.โ Anthony took a step closer but was blocked by Doug. He could only step back unwillingly.
โYou canโt beat me, Anthony. Even your father lost to me. Do you still want to go against me?โ Isolde was angry. At first, she thought she would teach him a lesson and forget it. She did not expect him to be so stubborn. Was he out of his mind?
โI wonโt fight with you. I want to marry you.โ Anthony lowered his eyes, his voice softening. โI promise I wonโt go against you again. You can bully me. But I wonโt wrong you. I swear.โ
Isolde was stunned. โWhat nonsense are you talking about?โ
Dougโs attitude immediately improved. He pulled Anthonyโs wrist and let him take a step forward. He took a closer look but was not entirely satisfied. However, his expression softened considerably. โYoung man, you love Isolde, donโt you?โ
Anthony boomed, โI want to marry her.โ His swollen face turned exceptionally red.
This time, even Isolde believed him. However, she was at a loss. Other than fighting, what else did I have to do with Anthony? What did I do wrong to make him fall for me?
