Chapter 113: Caught Her Eyes

+8 Pearls

Isolde sighed softly, her voice tinged with regret. โ€œPrudence is getting on in years; her health isnโ€™t what it used to be. Tattle, go to the apothecary and bring back a detoxifying, fire-clearing medicine for her. Tell her itโ€™s my act of filial piety.โ€

Hattie chuckled softly. โ€œA detoxifying medicine, huh? Seems like thatโ€™s exactly what she needs.โ€

Esme scoffed, a dark edge to her voice. โ€œTo think that a grandmother would speak of such things to her own granddaughter. Itโ€™s not just poison; her heart is rotten to the core.โ€

Hattie grinned. โ€œMr. Beckerโ€™s move is truly satisfying.โ€

Esmeโ€™s eyes narrowed as she glanced at Isolde. โ€œIt could have been even worse, but heโ€™s holding back out of consideration for Geoffrey. Otherwise, heโ€™d have had the Queen Mother handle the marriage. Prudence wouldnโ€™t have lasted long.โ€

โ€œThe Queen Mother would never arrange such a thing,โ€ Hattie said, raising an eyebrow.

Esme smiled faintly, a knowing glint in her eyes. โ€œYou think so? The Queen Mother is a playful person, and she despises those within the household who try to manipulate things.โ€

Isolde, recalling her past life, had always thought of the Queen Mother as cold and stern. The idea of her being playful was something she hadnโ€™t considered before.

โ€œThe Queen Mother knows Isolde,โ€ Esme added with a significant look.

Isolde raised an eyebrow. โ€œNaturally. I saved Lord Theodric, and I heard it was the Queen Mother who rewarded me for it.โ€

Esme shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s not quite like that. In time, youโ€™ll understand.โ€

Isolde looked at her, a puzzled frown forming. โ€œEsme, could you be more clear?โ€

Esme smiled. โ€œIf I explained it all, thereโ€™d be no fun in it. Letโ€™s focus on what needs to be done. When the Queen Motherโ€™s will arrives, youโ€™ll know it. It will be clear.โ€

Turning to Hattie, she instructed, โ€œDeliver the detoxifying medicine to Prudence and give a dose to Priscilla as well. Let her know I appreciate her five million and the coffeeโ€”let it give her some peace of mind.โ€

โ€œFive million?โ€ Hattie and Hazelโ€™s eyes widened in shock, and even the servants nearby stared in awe, giving Esme a thumbs-up. โ€œEsme, youโ€™re impressive!โ€

Esme smiled warmly, then, as if it were all part of the plan, she reached into her sleeve and pulled out several gifts, handing them out. Britney, eager to see what she had received, stared wide-eyed. โ€œDoes this really weigh two thousand of silver?โ€

โ€œTwo thousand,โ€ Esme replied with a grin, before producing more gifts. โ€œThese are for the other servants in the estateโ€”consider them a reward from the Pearl Tower.โ€

Noelle, watching this spectacle, couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œEsme, how big is your sleeve? How do you fit so many things in there?โ€

Esme chuckled. โ€œYouโ€™d be surprised at what can fit.โ€

Chapter 113: Caught Her Eyes

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t let you bear the expense.โ€

โ€œExpense?โ€ Esme laughed. โ€œWhatโ€™s a little spending when Iโ€™ve earned it today? Take it and let everyone enjoy.โ€ Her expression then turned serious. โ€œManaging the inner house, or the harem, requires both favor and authority. Favor must be given, but authority must also be established. Right now, Prudence holds the reins in the Dukeโ€™s estate. Fortunately, sheโ€™s been absent for two years, and there arenโ€™t many loyal to her. Itโ€™s the perfect time to take advantage of this.โ€

Isolde nodded seriously. โ€œThank you for your help.โ€

By evening, the servants were coming in one by one to thank Isolde for their gifts. Naturally, with a former palace eunuch now in their midst, everyone was eager to come and pay their respects.

The Pearl Tower had never been this lively before, and it had certainly never seen this much attention.

That evening, Geoffrey returned home, and Esme went to meet him. Since she had now officially entered the Dukeโ€™s estate, she needed to pay her respects to the head of the household.

Geoffrey, unaware that Daniel was actually Esme, was informed by his servants that a palace eunuch had requested to see him. He had no choice but to invite them into his study.

When Esme entered, she bowed low. โ€œYour humble servant pays her respects to Geoffrey.โ€

Geoffrey quickly stood, gesturing for her to sit. โ€œNo need for such formalities, please, take a seat.โ€

Esmeโ€™s rank, being a palace official who had served the Queen Mother, commanded respect, and Geoffrey knew better than to treat her lightly.

โ€œI beg forgiveness for my actions today,โ€ Esme said.

Geoffrey was taken aback. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Esme smirked, her eyes gleaming. โ€œThat eunuch today? It was me.โ€

The eunuch who had caused all this commotion had been none other than a high-ranking palace official from the Queen Motherโ€™s court.

โ€œYou neednโ€™t blame Mr. Becker,โ€ Esme said with a knowing smile. โ€œNone of this was his doing.โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s expression shifted. โ€œIf not Mr. Beckerโ€™s doing, then whose was it?โ€

Esmeโ€™s voice softened. โ€œFrom Lord Theodric to the execution of Milton, the Queen Mother is fully aware of everything. She has been paying attention to the Dukeโ€™s estate for quite some time now. The Queen Mother has always said that some people are born to do great things. They arenโ€™t suited for schemes or plots, and should never waste time on them. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m here.โ€

Geoffrey stared at her, processing the weight of her words. He wasnโ€™t sure he agreed. โ€œA woman? What great things can a woman do?โ€

Esme remained calm. โ€œThe Queen Mother sees things clearly. Geoffrey, you were once a formidable figure, but since Prunellaโ€™s death, youโ€™ve faltered. The Empire lost a great general because of it.โ€

Hearing this, Geoffrey felt a pang of sorrow. The glory of his past seemed so far away now.

โ€œYes, I have disappointed the Queen Mother,โ€ he said quietly.

Esme nodded, her expression solemn. โ€œThe Queen Mother said that if you clear your path, you could regain that former glory.โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s voice grew firm. โ€œThereโ€™s no clouding my path. I will serve Reynald Ringnice with all I have.โ€

Looking at Esme, he added, โ€œAs for the matters within the Dukeโ€™s care, Prudence is very wary. You, considering her age, donโ€™t let petty disputesโ€ฆare?โ€

Esme let out a soft sigh. โ€œWhat I have seen in the palaceโ€ฆWhat I know is that to truly govern, one must be objective, without bias. Only then can one remain just.โ€

She stood up, bowed, and said, โ€œIโ€™ll take my leave now.โ€

Geoffrey nodded, though his mind was far from settled.

After Esme left, Harlan entered, asking, โ€œWould you like to dine or visit Prudence forโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIs there soup?โ€ Geoffrey asked, his appetite nonexistent.

โ€œMrs. Langley has prepared soup for you,โ€ Harlan replied.

Geoffrey shook his head. โ€œNo, Iโ€™ll just eat something simple.โ€
