Chapter 126: A Trap

Nicole looked at Martha in confusion. โ€œYouโ€™re going out with Clark?โ€

Martha huffed. โ€œYou werenโ€™t at dinner, so you missed it. Clark somehow managed to secure a position at the Parliamentary Library. Grandmother didnโ€™t approve, but heโ€™s insisting on going.โ€

โ€œThe Parliamentary Library?โ€ Nicole smiled faintly. โ€œIsnโ€™t that a good thing?โ€

Marthaโ€™s expression hardened. โ€œWhatโ€™s good about it? Heโ€™s not our eldest son, just another useless bastard.โ€

Nicoleโ€™s face darkened. โ€œWatch your language.โ€

โ€œWhy should I care? Donโ€™t forget youโ€™re the legitimate child. Mother said it clearlyโ€”our family canโ€™t stand competing with bastards,โ€ Martha sneered before turning and storming out.

Nicole sighed lightly. She wasnโ€™t being high and mighty, but she didnโ€™t want any more trouble at home. She was more concerned about her own marriage. On the surface, her family seemed fine, but both her grandmother and mother were deluding themselves. Their current position depended entirely on Geoffrey. Vance couldnโ€™t get ahead, and it had nothing to do with the bastardโ€™s ambitions; it was because the legitimate son wasnโ€™t making progress.

โ€œMiss, your medicine,โ€ the maid, Faith, entered with a tray.

Nicole propped herself up. โ€œFaith, Clark wants to go to the Parliamentary Library. Do you think thatโ€™s a good idea or a bad one?โ€

The maid placed the medicine on the coffee table and lightly fanned it with a hand fan. โ€œI canโ€™t say, but itโ€™s always good to have someone in the family succeed. At least you might benefit from it, especially with your marriageโ€ฆโ€

Nicole responded, โ€œI know that. But Grandmother said once a bastard shines, it drains all the good luck of the Langley family and suppresses the legitimate heirs. I donโ€™t believe it. If we rely on Braden, weโ€™ll never get anywhere. We might as well let Clark try.โ€

She sighed, knowing exactly what her sisterโ€™s intentions were. Clark was simple-minded and naive. If he went out with Martha, things could go southโ€ฆ Nicole felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

After a while, she couldnโ€™t sit still anymore. โ€œFaith, help me to the Pearl Tower.โ€

At the Pearl Tower, Isolde sat under the lamp, embroidering. It wasnโ€™t something she enjoyed doing, but she made herself learn. It was a way to test her patience. Embroidery was demanding. When she first tried it, sheโ€™d nearly set the whole thing on fire in frustration.

โ€œYouโ€™re getting better,โ€ Esme said as she walked over and looked at her work.

Isolde calmly threaded another needle through the silk. โ€œNext, I want to try a more complex pattern.โ€

โ€œNo, stick to the eggs,โ€ Esme advised.

Isolde pouted and gestured at the basket in the corner. โ€œIโ€™ve already embroidered so many eggs.โ€

โ€œGoose eggs. Once you can manage goose eggs, youโ€™ll be able to do human faces.โ€

Noelle walked in with a smile. โ€œWhatโ€™s the point of all these eggs? You canโ€™t give them to anyone.โ€

โ€œEmbroidering the same thing all the time is frustrating,โ€ Esme said. โ€œCounty Princess, you must control that frustration.โ€ Esme knew Isolde was sharp and resourceful, but to thrive in the future, intelligence alone wouldnโ€™t suffice. Patience was just as important.

Britney hurried in and said, โ€œNicole is here.โ€

Esmeโ€™s face turned cold when she heard the name. โ€œShe wants Geoffreyโ€™s estate and to establish her own power.โ€

Isolde raised her head. โ€œLet her in.โ€ Although she wasnโ€™t particularly fond of Nicole, she didnโ€™t dislike her either. Nicole was a self-interested person, but who wasnโ€™t?

Nicole entered, supported by Faith, looking pale.

โ€œIsolde,โ€ Nicole hurriedly said, โ€œYou need to send someone to Westville Hotel. Iโ€™m afraid Clark is in danger.โ€

Isoldeโ€™s expression changed. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œSend someone first, and Iโ€™ll explain later,โ€ Nicole replied.

Isolde ordered, โ€œHattie, go to Westville.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Hattie said, drawing her sword and rushing out.

Nicole quickly added, โ€œDonโ€™t make a scene.โ€

โ€œUnderstood,โ€ Hattie replied, but then paused, realizing it wasnโ€™t Isoldeโ€™s voice. She didnโ€™t question it further.

Nicole visibly relaxed and slowly sat down, looking at Isolde. โ€œEarlier, Martha came to borrow a hairpin from me, saying she was taking Clark to Westville Hotel. Sheโ€™s never liked him, and now she suddenly wants to meet him there. Itโ€™s definitely a trap.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s your sister. Why are you telling me?โ€ Isolde looked at her skeptically. Although she didnโ€™t fully believe Nicoleโ€™s words, she decided to play it safe and sent Hattie.

Nicoleโ€™s pale face reflected her growing anxiety. โ€œMartha has bad intentions. If sheโ€™s still toying with him, her methods will be harsh. I donโ€™t want the Dukeโ€™s estate to be ridiculed anymore.โ€

Her words were indirect, but everyone understood what she meant. She was worried that any more scandals would ruin her chances for a good marriage.

โ€œIโ€™m leaving. I hope you donโ€™t make things bigger than they already are.โ€ Nicole stood and looked at Isolde, uncomfortable under her sharp gaze.

โ€œI can promise you I wonโ€™t cause any trouble outside,โ€ Isolde said coldly, โ€œBut if something happens to Clark, I wonโ€™t let Martha off the hook.โ€

Nicole nodded. โ€œDo as you wish, just keep it quiet.โ€

As Nicole walked away, with Faith supporting her, Yame watched them go. โ€œDo you think sheโ€™s telling the truth, or is she lying?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll know soon enough when Hamic returns,โ€ Isoldeโ€™s face hardened. She knew the truthโ€”aside from Nicole, no one would support Clarkโ€™s going to the Parliamentary Library. Since persuasion had failed, someone was definitely plotting something; Isolde had let her guard down too easily.

โ€œNoelle is right,โ€ Isolde said, โ€œMartha could do something, very underhanded.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t guard against her,โ€ Isolde added, her eyes narrowing. โ€œClark must go to the Parliamentary Library tomorrow; Doug recommended him, and it would be an insult if he doesnโ€™t go. If he delays, even if he gets there in the end, he will face criticism from all sides. Scholars can be unforgiving.โ€

โ€œThat makes sense,โ€ Esme agreed.

Hazel stepped forward. โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case, Iโ€™ll go too.โ€

โ€œNo, stay here. Hattie can handle it alone.โ€ Hazelโ€™s fiery nature might make things worse for Clark.

Hazel nodded reluctantly, quietly stepping back. But inside, she wanted to go and settle things herself.

Isolde continued, โ€œBlesertin probably knows about this already. Hazel, go listen in. I need to know just how harsh Prudenceโ€™s feelings are towards Clark.โ€

Esme nodded. โ€œYes, itโ€™s better to find out now than let Clark fall into their trap.โ€

Hazel received her orders and quickly left, vanishing into the night.
