Chapter 126: A Trap
Nicole looked at Martha in confusion. โYouโre going out with Clark?โ
Martha huffed. โYou werenโt at dinner, so you missed it. Clark somehow managed to secure a position at the Parliamentary Library. Grandmother didnโt approve, but heโs insisting on going.โ
โThe Parliamentary Library?โ Nicole smiled faintly. โIsnโt that a good thing?โ
Marthaโs expression hardened. โWhatโs good about it? Heโs not our eldest son, just another useless bastard.โ
Nicoleโs face darkened. โWatch your language.โ
โWhy should I care? Donโt forget youโre the legitimate child. Mother said it clearlyโour family canโt stand competing with bastards,โ Martha sneered before turning and storming out.
Nicole sighed lightly. She wasnโt being high and mighty, but she didnโt want any more trouble at home. She was more concerned about her own marriage. On the surface, her family seemed fine, but both her grandmother and mother were deluding themselves. Their current position depended entirely on Geoffrey. Vance couldnโt get ahead, and it had nothing to do with the bastardโs ambitions; it was because the legitimate son wasnโt making progress.
โMiss, your medicine,โ the maid, Faith, entered with a tray.
Nicole propped herself up. โFaith, Clark wants to go to the Parliamentary Library. Do you think thatโs a good idea or a bad one?โ
The maid placed the medicine on the coffee table and lightly fanned it with a hand fan. โI canโt say, but itโs always good to have someone in the family succeed. At least you might benefit from it, especially with your marriageโฆโ
Nicole responded, โI know that. But Grandmother said once a bastard shines, it drains all the good luck of the Langley family and suppresses the legitimate heirs. I donโt believe it. If we rely on Braden, weโll never get anywhere. We might as well let Clark try.โ
She sighed, knowing exactly what her sisterโs intentions were. Clark was simple-minded and naive. If he went out with Martha, things could go southโฆ Nicole felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness.
After a while, she couldnโt sit still anymore. โFaith, help me to the Pearl Tower.โ
At the Pearl Tower, Isolde sat under the lamp, embroidering. It wasnโt something she enjoyed doing, but she made herself learn. It was a way to test her patience. Embroidery was demanding. When she first tried it, sheโd nearly set the whole thing on fire in frustration.
โYouโre getting better,โ Esme said as she walked over and looked at her work.
Isolde calmly threaded another needle through the silk. โNext, I want to try a more complex pattern.โ
โNo, stick to the eggs,โ Esme advised.
Isolde pouted and gestured at the basket in the corner. โIโve already embroidered so many eggs.โ
โGoose eggs. Once you can manage goose eggs, youโll be able to do human faces.โ
Noelle walked in with a smile. โWhatโs the point of all these eggs? You canโt give them to anyone.โ
โEmbroidering the same thing all the time is frustrating,โ Esme said. โCounty Princess, you must control that frustration.โ Esme knew Isolde was sharp and resourceful, but to thrive in the future, intelligence alone wouldnโt suffice. Patience was just as important.
Britney hurried in and said, โNicole is here.โ
Esmeโs face turned cold when she heard the name. โShe wants Geoffreyโs estate and to establish her own power.โ
Isolde raised her head. โLet her in.โ Although she wasnโt particularly fond of Nicole, she didnโt dislike her either. Nicole was a self-interested person, but who wasnโt?
Nicole entered, supported by Faith, looking pale.
โIsolde,โ Nicole hurriedly said, โYou need to send someone to Westville Hotel. Iโm afraid Clark is in danger.โ
Isoldeโs expression changed. โWhat do you mean?โ
โSend someone first, and Iโll explain later,โ Nicole replied.
Isolde ordered, โHattie, go to Westville.โ
โYes,โ Hattie said, drawing her sword and rushing out.
Nicole quickly added, โDonโt make a scene.โ
โUnderstood,โ Hattie replied, but then paused, realizing it wasnโt Isoldeโs voice. She didnโt question it further.
Nicole visibly relaxed and slowly sat down, looking at Isolde. โEarlier, Martha came to borrow a hairpin from me, saying she was taking Clark to Westville Hotel. Sheโs never liked him, and now she suddenly wants to meet him there. Itโs definitely a trap.โ
โSheโs your sister. Why are you telling me?โ Isolde looked at her skeptically. Although she didnโt fully believe Nicoleโs words, she decided to play it safe and sent Hattie.
Nicoleโs pale face reflected her growing anxiety. โMartha has bad intentions. If sheโs still toying with him, her methods will be harsh. I donโt want the Dukeโs estate to be ridiculed anymore.โ
Her words were indirect, but everyone understood what she meant. She was worried that any more scandals would ruin her chances for a good marriage.
โIโm leaving. I hope you donโt make things bigger than they already are.โ Nicole stood and looked at Isolde, uncomfortable under her sharp gaze.
โI can promise you I wonโt cause any trouble outside,โ Isolde said coldly, โBut if something happens to Clark, I wonโt let Martha off the hook.โ
Nicole nodded. โDo as you wish, just keep it quiet.โ
As Nicole walked away, with Faith supporting her, Yame watched them go. โDo you think sheโs telling the truth, or is she lying?โ
โWeโll know soon enough when Hamic returns,โ Isoldeโs face hardened. She knew the truthโaside from Nicole, no one would support Clarkโs going to the Parliamentary Library. Since persuasion had failed, someone was definitely plotting something; Isolde had let her guard down too easily.
โNoelle is right,โ Isolde said, โMartha could do something, very underhanded.โ
โI didnโt guard against her,โ Isolde added, her eyes narrowing. โClark must go to the Parliamentary Library tomorrow; Doug recommended him, and it would be an insult if he doesnโt go. If he delays, even if he gets there in the end, he will face criticism from all sides. Scholars can be unforgiving.โ
โThat makes sense,โ Esme agreed.
Hazel stepped forward. โIf thatโs the case, Iโll go too.โ
โNo, stay here. Hattie can handle it alone.โ Hazelโs fiery nature might make things worse for Clark.
Hazel nodded reluctantly, quietly stepping back. But inside, she wanted to go and settle things herself.
Isolde continued, โBlesertin probably knows about this already. Hazel, go listen in. I need to know just how harsh Prudenceโs feelings are towards Clark.โ
Esme nodded. โYes, itโs better to find out now than let Clark fall into their trap.โ
Hazel received her orders and quickly left, vanishing into the night.
