Chapter 14: Not in This Life
In Argentum, an hour later, Harlan brought in the soldier.
โYour Grace, Duke of Blackmoor!โ The soldier bowed deeply, his nervousness evident. Geoffrey regarded him with a steady, measured gaze. โNo need for alarm,โ he said calmly. โI have a few questions. What is your name?โ
โHannibal, Your Grace,โ the soldier replied, standing rigidly.
Geoffrey inclined his head slightly, his expression kind though his eyes sharpened. โYou were at the city gate today. Tell meโwhat did you see?โ
Hannibal hesitated, his unease growing. โYour Graceโฆ I didnโt see anything unusual.โ
โSpeak freely,โ Geoffrey said, motioning to a chair. He poured a goblet of wine and placed it before him. โI assure you, no harm will come of it.โ
Hannibal remained standing, his hands trembling. After a moment, he stammered, โForgive me, Your Grace. I sawโฆ the Lady Blackmoor leaving the city. She was with a man, leaning on his arm.โ
Geoffreyโs expression darkened, though his voice remained measured. โAnd how can you be certain it was my daughter?โ
โYour Grace, I accompanied Marshal Blackwell to your manor once,โ Hannibal answered quickly. โI saw the Third Lady then and recognized her.โ
Geoffrey let out a quiet hum, a faint smile playing on his lips. โAh, so youโve seen her before. Then you must have been mistaken, for my daughter remains in the manor and has not left.โ
Hannibal froze, realization dawning. He dropped into a deep bow. โYes, of course! It must have been my mistake. Please forgive me, Your Grace.โ
Geoffreyโs smile held. โIgnorance is no crime.โ With a wave of his hand, Harlan stepped forward and pressed a folded note into the soldierโs hand. Hannibalโs eyes widened as he unfolded the noteโ1,000 thalers.
โTake it,โ Geoffrey said with easy warmth. โA gift for you and your comradesโhave a drink on me. But remember: after drinking, keep your tongue in check. Some things must remain beyond question.โ
Hannibal clutched the note tightly, bowing again. โYes, Your Grace! Iโll say nothing more.โ
โGood,โ Geoffrey dismissed him with a nod. โYou may go.โ The soldier bowed deeply before retreating.
As the door closed, Harlan turned to find Geoffreyโs expression transformed, his calm faรงade cracking to reveal barely restrained fury.
โYour Grace,โ Harlan began hesitantly, โthe rumors have already spread. There were many at the gate who saw and heardโฆโ
How far they must goโbring that ungrateful girl back to me.
โAt once, Your Grace!โ Harlan bowed and left swiftly.
Once alone, Geoffrey exhaled slowly, closing his eyes against the anger roiling within him. Yet Isoldeโs defiant words from that day rang unbidden in his mind. Could she truly have eloped? The thought struck like a blow. There had been no sign. Or perhapsโฆ she has returned to Windermount!
That evening, as he returned to the manor, Matilda met him at the door, tears streaming down her face. โYour Grace,โ she wept, โthis is my failing as well. I should have seen it comingโฆ but I noticed nothing.โ
Geoffreyโs mind churned with rage. As Matilda wept incessantly, he turned to her, his voice like ice. โDo you even consider her your daughter? If youโd shown her the slightest care, this disgrace would never have come to pass.โ
Matilda sobbed, wringing her hands. โItโs my fault, my lord. All my fault!โ Her voice trembled as she spoke. Since Isolde returned from Windermount, sheโs been so distant. How could a mother and daughter not grow apart when she tells me nothing? I thought her quiet and obedientโhow could I have known this scandal was brewing? No wonder sheโs been acting strangely of late. She meant to leave!
Geoffrey strode into the room, her words only fanning the flames of his anger. With a loud crack, he slammed his palm against the table. โWhat did her maid say?โ
Matilda dabbed at her tears with trembling fingers. โAt first, the wretched girl wouldnโt speak a word. But under questioningโฆ she confessed.โ Matildaโs voice faltered as shame crept into her tone. โShe said Isolde met the scholar late last year. They fell in love at first sight, pledged themselves to each other in secretโฆ andโฆ theyโฆ consummated the union long ago.โ Her voice broke, and she whispered bitterly, โAnd all this while, she spoke of Eleanor as if nothing was amiss!โ
Geoffreyโs expression darkened. Consummatedโand yet he accepted the betrothal to the marquessโs family? His years of careful diplomacy with the marquess, undone by her folly.
โBring the maid here!โ he barked, his fury spilling over. Matilda gave the order to Anne, and before long, Helena was dragged into the room. She was barely conscious, her face battered and fingers swollenโproof of the interrogation she had endured. Anne struck Helena across the face with a resounding slap, her voice sharp. โThe Duke has questions. Speak plainly or youโll regret it.โ
Helena flinched, her matted hair falling over her tear-streaked face. Her swollen lips parted, her voice barely a whisper. โIโฆ I donโt knowโฆโ
โDonโt know?โ Anneโs hand struck again as she yanked Helenaโs hair. โDid you forget my warning? Speak truthfully to the Dukeโno lies, no shielding Miss Langley!โ
Helena broke into sobs, unable to contain herself. โIt was my faultโฆ I pushed her to leave with the scholar. She didnโt want to goโฆ she didnโtโฆโ
A glint of cruelty flashed in Anneโs eyes, but Matilda subtly gestured for her to stay silent.
Geoffreyโs anger erupted. He kicked Helena hard in the stomach, sending her sprawling on the floor, gasping for air. Finally, she whispered, trembling, โKill me, my lordโฆ just kill meโฆโ
โLock her away,โ Geoffrey commanded, his voice cold. โWhen that ungrateful girl is found, theyโll both answer for this.โ
Servants rushed in, dragging Helena out like a broken doll.
Matilda lowered her gaze, masking the triumph flickering in her eyes. โMy lord, what can we do? People from the Valen family will hear of this soon. We must act quickly.โ
Geoffrey glared at her, his expression thunderous. โThis disgrace within my household begins with you. If you canโt manage the family, Iโll write to my mother and have her return at once.โ
Matildaโs heart raced, but she kept her voice steady. โI have failed you, my lord. Forgive me.โ Still, bitterness slipped into her tone as she added, โBut last time, when Isolde killed Mary, my brother intervened, catching her in a fit of madness. He disciplined her, yet you pitied herโโ
Geoffrey cut her off, his voice icy. โAre you suggesting the affairs of my house require your brotherโs oversight?โ
โNo, my lord,โ Matilda replied quickly. โI only mean that anger will not resolve this. The deed is done, and it must be addressed.โ
Geoffrey drew a sharp breath, forcing himself to think. If the Valen family inquires, delay them. Iโve sent men to search for her. Sheโs likely fled to Windermount. Once sheโs captured, sheโll pay for this.โ
โYes, my lord,โ Matilda answered, bowing. As she withdrew, satisfaction gleamed in her eyes. Return? Never. Isolde will meet her end in Wolf Mountain. Marry into the marquessโs family? Not in this lifeโor the next.
