Chapter 14: Not in This Life

In Argentum, an hour later, Harlan brought in the soldier.

โ€œYour Grace, Duke of Blackmoor!โ€ The soldier bowed deeply, his nervousness evident. Geoffrey regarded him with a steady, measured gaze. โ€œNo need for alarm,โ€ he said calmly. โ€œI have a few questions. What is your name?โ€

โ€œHannibal, Your Grace,โ€ the soldier replied, standing rigidly.

Geoffrey inclined his head slightly, his expression kind though his eyes sharpened. โ€œYou were at the city gate today. Tell meโ€”what did you see?โ€

Hannibal hesitated, his unease growing. โ€œYour Graceโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t see anything unusual.โ€

โ€œSpeak freely,โ€ Geoffrey said, motioning to a chair. He poured a goblet of wine and placed it before him. โ€œI assure you, no harm will come of it.โ€

Hannibal remained standing, his hands trembling. After a moment, he stammered, โ€œForgive me, Your Grace. I sawโ€ฆ the Lady Blackmoor leaving the city. She was with a man, leaning on his arm.โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s expression darkened, though his voice remained measured. โ€œAnd how can you be certain it was my daughter?โ€

โ€œYour Grace, I accompanied Marshal Blackwell to your manor once,โ€ Hannibal answered quickly. โ€œI saw the Third Lady then and recognized her.โ€

Geoffrey let out a quiet hum, a faint smile playing on his lips. โ€œAh, so youโ€™ve seen her before. Then you must have been mistaken, for my daughter remains in the manor and has not left.โ€

Hannibal froze, realization dawning. He dropped into a deep bow. โ€œYes, of course! It must have been my mistake. Please forgive me, Your Grace.โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s smile held. โ€œIgnorance is no crime.โ€ With a wave of his hand, Harlan stepped forward and pressed a folded note into the soldierโ€™s hand. Hannibalโ€™s eyes widened as he unfolded the noteโ€”1,000 thalers.

โ€œTake it,โ€ Geoffrey said with easy warmth. โ€œA gift for you and your comradesโ€”have a drink on me. But remember: after drinking, keep your tongue in check. Some things must remain beyond question.โ€

Hannibal clutched the note tightly, bowing again. โ€œYes, Your Grace! Iโ€™ll say nothing more.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Geoffrey dismissed him with a nod. โ€œYou may go.โ€ The soldier bowed deeply before retreating.

As the door closed, Harlan turned to find Geoffreyโ€™s expression transformed, his calm faรงade cracking to reveal barely restrained fury.

โ€œYour Grace,โ€ Harlan began hesitantly, โ€œthe rumors have already spread. There were many at the gate who saw and heardโ€ฆโ€

How far they must goโ€”bring that ungrateful girl back to me.

โ€œAt once, Your Grace!โ€ Harlan bowed and left swiftly.

Once alone, Geoffrey exhaled slowly, closing his eyes against the anger roiling within him. Yet Isoldeโ€™s defiant words from that day rang unbidden in his mind. Could she truly have eloped? The thought struck like a blow. There had been no sign. Or perhapsโ€ฆ she has returned to Windermount!

That evening, as he returned to the manor, Matilda met him at the door, tears streaming down her face. โ€œYour Grace,โ€ she wept, โ€œthis is my failing as well. I should have seen it comingโ€ฆ but I noticed nothing.โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s mind churned with rage. As Matilda wept incessantly, he turned to her, his voice like ice. โ€œDo you even consider her your daughter? If youโ€™d shown her the slightest care, this disgrace would never have come to pass.โ€

Matilda sobbed, wringing her hands. โ€œItโ€™s my fault, my lord. All my fault!โ€ Her voice trembled as she spoke. Since Isolde returned from Windermount, sheโ€™s been so distant. How could a mother and daughter not grow apart when she tells me nothing? I thought her quiet and obedientโ€”how could I have known this scandal was brewing? No wonder sheโ€™s been acting strangely of late. She meant to leave!

Geoffrey strode into the room, her words only fanning the flames of his anger. With a loud crack, he slammed his palm against the table. โ€œWhat did her maid say?โ€

Matilda dabbed at her tears with trembling fingers. โ€œAt first, the wretched girl wouldnโ€™t speak a word. But under questioningโ€ฆ she confessed.โ€ Matildaโ€™s voice faltered as shame crept into her tone. โ€œShe said Isolde met the scholar late last year. They fell in love at first sight, pledged themselves to each other in secretโ€ฆ andโ€ฆ theyโ€ฆ consummated the union long ago.โ€ Her voice broke, and she whispered bitterly, โ€œAnd all this while, she spoke of Eleanor as if nothing was amiss!โ€

Geoffreyโ€™s expression darkened. Consummatedโ€”and yet he accepted the betrothal to the marquessโ€™s family? His years of careful diplomacy with the marquess, undone by her folly.

โ€œBring the maid here!โ€ he barked, his fury spilling over. Matilda gave the order to Anne, and before long, Helena was dragged into the room. She was barely conscious, her face battered and fingers swollenโ€”proof of the interrogation she had endured. Anne struck Helena across the face with a resounding slap, her voice sharp. โ€œThe Duke has questions. Speak plainly or youโ€™ll regret it.โ€

Helena flinched, her matted hair falling over her tear-streaked face. Her swollen lips parted, her voice barely a whisper. โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t knowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t know?โ€ Anneโ€™s hand struck again as she yanked Helenaโ€™s hair. โ€œDid you forget my warning? Speak truthfully to the Dukeโ€”no lies, no shielding Miss Langley!โ€

Helena broke into sobs, unable to contain herself. โ€œIt was my faultโ€ฆ I pushed her to leave with the scholar. She didnโ€™t want to goโ€ฆ she didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

A glint of cruelty flashed in Anneโ€™s eyes, but Matilda subtly gestured for her to stay silent.

Geoffreyโ€™s anger erupted. He kicked Helena hard in the stomach, sending her sprawling on the floor, gasping for air. Finally, she whispered, trembling, โ€œKill me, my lordโ€ฆ just kill meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLock her away,โ€ Geoffrey commanded, his voice cold. โ€œWhen that ungrateful girl is found, theyโ€™ll both answer for this.โ€

Servants rushed in, dragging Helena out like a broken doll.

Matilda lowered her gaze, masking the triumph flickering in her eyes. โ€œMy lord, what can we do? People from the Valen family will hear of this soon. We must act quickly.โ€

Geoffrey glared at her, his expression thunderous. โ€œThis disgrace within my household begins with you. If you canโ€™t manage the family, Iโ€™ll write to my mother and have her return at once.โ€

Matildaโ€™s heart raced, but she kept her voice steady. โ€œI have failed you, my lord. Forgive me.โ€ Still, bitterness slipped into her tone as she added, โ€œBut last time, when Isolde killed Mary, my brother intervened, catching her in a fit of madness. He disciplined her, yet you pitied herโ€”โ€

Geoffrey cut her off, his voice icy. โ€œAre you suggesting the affairs of my house require your brotherโ€™s oversight?โ€

โ€œNo, my lord,โ€ Matilda replied quickly. โ€œI only mean that anger will not resolve this. The deed is done, and it must be addressed.โ€

Geoffrey drew a sharp breath, forcing himself to think. If the Valen family inquires, delay them. Iโ€™ve sent men to search for her. Sheโ€™s likely fled to Windermount. Once sheโ€™s captured, sheโ€™ll pay for this.โ€

โ€œYes, my lord,โ€ Matilda answered, bowing. As she withdrew, satisfaction gleamed in her eyes. Return? Never. Isolde will meet her end in Wolf Mountain. Marry into the marquessโ€™s family? Not in this lifeโ€”or the next.
