Chapter 154: A Husband-Killer +8 Pearls

Isolde was in an unusually good mood today. Everything seemed to go her way, even when Priscilla came over to pick a fight. She didnโ€™t stop her; instead, she let her in. Priscilla pointed a finger at her and scolded, โ€œWhy did you stop Pablo from saving Braden? If Braden ends up in jail, I swear Iโ€™ll tear you apart. Do you believe me?โ€

Isolde smiled brightly. โ€œPriscilla, youโ€™re really hurting my feelings. Come on, come in and sit down. Noelle, make coffee for Priscillaโ€”itโ€™s so hot outside, she must be thirsty.โ€

โ€œStop grinning like that! Isolde, let go of me, youโ€™re hurting my armโ€”ah, let go!โ€ Priscilla screamed.

Isolde gasped. โ€œOh, I almost forgot about your injury. Itโ€™s not serious, right? Do you want me to call a doctor?โ€ She wore an expression of such sincere concern that it almost seemed like she might actually help Priscilla. This only startled Priscilla more. After all, she had come to pick a fight secretly, without Prudence knowing. If she caused trouble here, sheโ€™d get an earful later. Seeing Isolde act this way, she cursed under her breath and stormed off.

Isolde watched Priscillaโ€™s hurried retreat with a sigh. โ€œPriscilla misunderstood me,โ€ she muttered.

Noelle, stifling a laugh, said, โ€œWhatโ€™s going on with you today? Youโ€™re getting along so well with Priscilla, she must be scared out of her wits!โ€

Isolde took a calm sip of coffee, occasionally brushing her hand against her sleeve pocket, feeling the paper inside. Each touch made her smile faintly.

When Geoffrey came home in the evening, he headed straight to the Pearl Tower. Isolde was in a good mood, and her attitude toward him was unusually warm.

Geoffrey cleared his throat, sat down, and said nonchalantly, โ€œPablo says heโ€™s going to the Valen family tomorrow to annul the engagement. I think we should go. What do you think?โ€

Isolde replied with a gentle smile, โ€œItโ€™s up to you.โ€

The simple phrase, โ€œItโ€™s up to you,โ€ seemed to please Geoffrey.

โ€œHmm, since it concerns your reputationโ€ฆ Since youโ€™ve said itโ€™s up to me, Iโ€™ll go. You donโ€™t need to come; Iโ€™ll take the princess with me.โ€ The fact that he planned to take the princess instead of any of the women in his own household clearly showed his deep distrust of Prudence, Priscilla, and Matilda.

Isolde nodded, โ€œAlright.โ€ She naturally couldnโ€™t be involved in such matters. She wouldnโ€™t create trouble by clashing with Margaret and William in front of Pablo.

After the business was settled, Geoffrey seemed at a loss for what to talk about. He hesitated before asking, โ€œHave you had dinner?โ€

โ€œAre we not going out tonight?โ€

โ€œThese past few nights, Prudence and Priscilla have been dining at Blesertin,โ€ she replied coolly. In other words, if there was no excitement, she wasnโ€™t interested.

โ€œAh, thenโ€ฆ how about we invite Clark over for dinner here?โ€ Geoffrey suggested.

Isolde obediently replied, โ€œAlright, you go ahead. Iโ€™ll have someone invite Clark to join me for dinner.โ€

Geoffrey paused for a moment, then awkwardly said, โ€œHmm.โ€ With that, he left.

Hattie, watching Geoffreyโ€™s lonely retreating figure, remarked, โ€œGeoffrey wants to eat with you and Clark.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Isolde replied indifferently, โ€œBut I donโ€™t feel like eating with him.โ€ She was in a good mood and didnโ€™t want anyone to ruin it.

โ€œShall we check if Clark has come back?โ€

โ€œClark has been coming home around the hour of the Boar these past few nights.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll wait for him. Iโ€™m not hungry. I also want to ask him about his work at the Parliamentary Library.โ€

Isolde sent Hattie away and pulled out Oliverโ€™s letter once more. After reading it again, she felt unusually lighthearted and, unable to contain herself, said, โ€œIโ€™m going to check on Nicole.โ€

Nicole had been staying indoors to recover, not having stepped outside for days. Isolde hadnโ€™t visited her yet. She didnโ€™t know if Nicole had come to terms with things. If she could take Esmeโ€™s advice, she might change her perspective.

When she arrived at Wyngor Chamber, she found Faith carrying some untouched food as she came out. Seeing Isolde, Faith quickly bowed and greeted her. โ€œIsolde.โ€

โ€œNot eating?โ€ Isolde asked, noticing that the food hadnโ€™t been touched. Clearly, Nicole was still sulking.

โ€œNo, she didnโ€™t eat. She didnโ€™t have lunch either,โ€ Faith said, her voice tinged with sadness.

Isolde took the food from Faith. โ€œIโ€™ll take it in.โ€

โ€œIsolde, please, donโ€™t force herโ€ฆโ€ Faith, knowing how sharp Isoldeโ€™s words could be, quickly tried to stop her, worried she might upset Nicole. But Isolde had already walked into the room, carrying the food.

Nicole was lying on the bed. She didnโ€™t need to stay in bed anymore, but she refused to get up. Isolde hadnโ€™t seen her in a few days, and when she saw her now, she was taken aback. Nicole looked pale, her face swollen. Her eyes were sunken, and her lips were devoid of color. Despite the summer heat, her skin was pale, and her hair was a tangled messโ€”nothing like the noble young lady of the Dukeโ€™s estate.

โ€œWhat have you done to yourself?โ€ Isolde placed the food down on the table and frowned.

Nicole, seeing her, sat up slightly. โ€œNo matter how I look, no one cares.โ€

Isolde clicked her tongue. โ€œCome on, eat something.โ€

โ€œI have no appetite. I canโ€™t eat,โ€ Nicole said weakly, her voice devoid of energy.

โ€œEat with me. I havenโ€™t had anything yet either,โ€ Isolde said as she ordered Faith, โ€œBring another set of cutlery.โ€

Faith, anxiously watching, was relieved when she saw that Isolde was going to sit down and eat with Nicole. She quickly went to fetch the utensils.

Nicole looked at her and said, โ€œYou donโ€™t need to be so nice to me. Iโ€™ve misunderstood you before.โ€

โ€œGet up.โ€ Isolde reached out a hand to help her up but didnโ€™t reply. Nicole hesitated for a moment but eventually let Isolde help her to her feet. Nicole was just a soft-hearted person. She had no real temper. She could be selfish, but compared to Martha, she was kinder.

Faith returned with the cutlery, and Isolde served Nicole half a bowl of food. โ€œEat.โ€

Nicole really didnโ€™t feel like eating, but to appease Isolde, she ate a few bites. She put down her utensils and looked at Isolde. โ€œThank you for saving me.โ€

Isolde grunted in response, continuing to eat without looking up.

โ€œFaith said that Grandmother and Mother had no intention of saving me,โ€ Nicole said, her voice tinged with sadness.

โ€œIf youโ€™re seeking death, donโ€™t blame others for not saving you,โ€ Isolde said slowly, finally looking up. โ€œYou havenโ€™t even started living again. Be stronger. Honestly, itโ€™s not that bad. There are people in worse situations than you. Whatโ€™s your life compared to theirs?โ€

Nicole stared at her blankly, a bitter smile tugging at her lips. โ€œYeah, so I canโ€™t get married. What does that matter? At least Iโ€™m still alive.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll ask Esme to find someone for you. What do you want in a man?โ€ Isolde asked casually.

Nicole lowered her head. โ€œI donโ€™t have any demands. Just donโ€™t let him be a man in his fifties or sixties. As long as he treats me well, doesnโ€™t have a harem, and isnโ€™t so poor that I end up begging on the streets.โ€

Isolde stared at her, surprised. โ€œIf those are your only requirements, why are you worried about not getting married?โ€

Nicole gave a hollow laugh. โ€œIโ€™m cursed, Isolde. Who would want to marry me if it means death? What can I ask for?โ€

โ€œStop with the nonsense. Who believes in such a curse? Are you going to believe Michelleโ€™s gossip now? Sheโ€™s just trying to make trouble,โ€ Isolde said angrily.

Nicole gave another bitter laugh. โ€œYou donโ€™t understand, Isolde. Iโ€™ve heard those words in Caemons, and I hear them again when I go back to Argentum. If you tell me no oneโ€™s saying them, I wonโ€™t believe you. Grandmother has been telling me sheโ€™ll find me a good match, but the truth is, she canโ€™t find anyone, so sheโ€™s just been stringing me along.โ€
