Chapter 161: I Want to Marry Him
Isoldeโs thoughts drifted to someone. โTomorrow, Iโll ask Sadie to come and treat Marley. Iโll leave Hattie here to watch over her. Please arrange a place for Hattie to stay,โ she instructed.
Ryker, surprised Isolde could summon Sadie, looked at her with newfound respect. โUnderstood. Everything will be arranged as you say.โ
Isolde pulled out 1,000 coins from her pouch and handed them to him. โThis is for the doctorsโ fees. Keep track of the total, and Iโll reimburse you. Also, stay here for now. Donโt return to the Dukeโs estate just yet. Take care of things here.โ
Ryker nodded, accepting the money. โUnderstood, Iโll take care of everything.โ
Isoldeโs gaze sharpened, and she added, โDonโt try anything clever.โ
Ryker chuckled nervously. โOf course not. I wouldnโt dare.โ
The weight on Isoldeโs chest seemed to lift after finding Marley. She had a general idea of what had happened to her, but the details were still unclear. She needed to know everything.
Prudence was quick to act. That day, Collin came to Isolde and told her that Prudence had begun unloading all the estates and properties she owned. Many shops were leased out, but Prudence was determined to reclaim them, even at a loss on the rent. For those who didnโt want to move, she was offering them for sale at a discounted price.
โShe has the deeds, and these can be privately traded. She might manage to sell all the properties and estates in a short time. Should we get involved?โ Collin asked, worried.
Isolde considered Garrettโs return and replied, โNo need. The properties she holds are still under the Sharp familyโs name. Even if she sells them at a bargain, someone might take them, but theyโre stamped with her private seal. The Sharp family could pursue her for everything, and she would have to return everything and pay the deposit back.โ
Collin laughed. โSo, it seems like sheโs going to lose out in the end.โ
โExactly. She thinks the Sharp family wonโt care since these were part of her dowry. But once Garrett returns to Argentum and learns the whole story, she wonโt be able to escape the consequences.โ
Collin grinned. โSounds like a business opportunity.โ
Isolde smiled slyly. โI have a lot of gold, and Iโll borrow silver from the princess. Collin, with your reputation, we can buy up the properties in bulk. When the Sharp family comes after her, weโll be the biggest sellers, and weโll walk away with a fortune.โ
Collin raised an eyebrow. โYou trust me?โ
โIf I donโt trust you, who can I trust?โ
โI wonโt let you down,โ Collin promised, his eyes firm with resolve.
Isolde wasnโt concerned about the deposit penalties. Her goal was to drive Prudence into a corner, forcing her to make a desperate move.
After examining Marley, Sadie explained, โThe poison she was given is the same as yoursโcold poison. But the dosage was light, so it seems she was just tasting food for someone. Thereโs no immediate danger, but the long-term effects have weakened her constitution. With proper care, sheโll recover slowly.โ
โAnd her madness?โ Isolde asked, anxiety evident in her voice.
Sadie sighed. โThat will take time. Sheโs been through a lot of trauma, and Iโve found several knife wounds on her body. She must have been hunted down.โ
Isolde frowned. It didnโt make sense. Marley had seen Jessica just before leaving the Dukeโs estate, and Jessica had handed over items that had been stolen from the manor. Marley had seemed fine at the time and hadnโt spoken of anything concerning her motherโs death. It was clear that Marley hadnโt known the full extent of her motherโs fate. So, how had she ended up like this?
โDonโt worry. Iโll treat her with acupuncture,โ Sadie said, noticing Isoldeโs troubled expression. โSheโll improve.โ
Isolde looked at Sadie with genuine gratitude. โThank you.โ
Sadie was writing out a prescription but casually asked, โBy the way, Clark is your older brother, right?โ
Isolde nodded. โYes. Do you know him?โ
โIโve met him once,โ Sadie replied, still writing.
Once the prescription was ready, she handed it to Ryker before asking, โWhat do you think of Clark?โ
Isolde blinked in surprise. โWhat do you mean, what do I think?โ
Sadie didnโt break her serious demeanor as she looked directly at Isolde. โWell, whatโs your opinion of him?โ
Isolde paused, unsure of where this conversation was headed. โHeโs a kind and honest person,โ she replied, a little confused.
Sadie nodded thoughtfully. โHas anyone tried to matchmake for him?โ
โNo,โ Isolde laughed. โWhy? Do you know someone suitable?โ
Sadieโs eyes sharpened. โWhat do you think of me?โ
Isolde froze for a moment before her smile slowly faded. โAre you serious?โ
Sadieโs expression remained deadpan. โI donโt waste words.โ
Isoldeโs lips trembled as she responded, โOf course! If Sadie were to marry Clark, that would be the most wonderful thing in the world.โ
A rush of excitement surged through Isolde. If Jonathan supported Clark, then Prudenceโs attempts to use her illness as an excuse wouldnโt be able to trap her brother for long. The Queen Mother would surely love Sadie and give her a separate residence. The thought of how Priscilla and Prudence would seethe with jealousy filled Isolde with anticipation.
Sadie nodded, her gaze firm. โThen tomorrow, Iโll ask my mother to make a formal proposal.โ
Isoldeโs jaw dropped. โYouโre the one proposing?โ
โIs there a problem with that?โ Sadie asked, packing up her medical kit. โWhen a woman likes someone, she can pursue them. Clark is a good man. If we wait too long, someone else will beat us to it. I donโt waste time. Donโt you think itโs time to seize your own happiness?โ
Good man? Isolde could barely wrap her head around the idea. Butโฆ okay.
That evening, after Clark returned home, Isolde seized the opportunity to bring him some soup.
โClark, have you eaten?โ she asked softly, pushing open the door and peeking inside.
Clark looked up and, seeing her, rubbed his tired brow. โI had a little. Did you save soup for me?โ
โItโs a nutritious soup, good for soothing your throat,โ she said, setting it on the table and sitting down. โBy the way, did you hand in the report that day?โ
Clark seemed distracted. โI did. Luka barely said a word when he looked at it. Iโm not sure if it even made it to the front lines.โ
Isolde smiled reassuringly. โDonโt worry. Gold always shines through in the end.โ
Clarkโs handsome face softened with a warm smile. He looked at Isolde with a gentle expression. โIsolde, you really are a flower of wisdom.โ
Isolde gave a half-smile. โI think that title belongs to someone else. By the way, Clark, have you met any women recently?โ
