Chapter 228: Sheโs Definitely Not Simple
Isolde looked at Ashley. โItโs normal for him to overthink. Who wouldn't be concerned about the Royal Court troops suddenly arriving in the city?โ
Ashley smiled slightly. โSince bringing troops would make Prince Kamari hesitant, why did you bring them?โ
Isolde noted the sharpness in Ashleyโs slight smile and said helplessly, โI came under the Queen Motherโs decree. The Imperial Astronomers predicted trouble in Zloimondโheavy rain and floods. The Queen Mother ordered me to cooperate with Zloimondโs government to evacuate coastal residents and prevent mishaps.โ
Ashleyโs smile deepened. โIf thereโs a storm, it will be rain from the sky. How can that be a disaster? The Royal Court is far away in Heaven Mountain. I fear you donโt understand the suffering of Zloimondโs people.โ
Isolde replied, โI donโt. Iโm following orders. I planned to visit Kamariโs mansion after settling in. I didnโt expect Ms. Charlie to come personally. Please tell the King that the Queen Motherโs decree is to evacuate coastal residents to avoid flooding.โ
Ashley nodded. โI will definitely tell him the truth.โ
โThank you!โ Isolde said.
Ashley tidied Isoldeโs clothes, her actions dignified and exuding an invisible pressure.
โBy the way, how did you know about me?โ Ashley asked, raising her eyes slightly.
Isolde answered honestly, โBefore we arrived, the Queen Mother said the King has a confidante, Ashley Charlie, who would advise the King. โ
Ashley was stunned. โThe Queen Mother knows about me?โ
โYes, the Queen Mother is omniscient!โ Isolde replied.
Ashley laughed heartily, though a listener could detect sarcasm. โThatโs not a human, but a god. Are you worshipping the Queen as a god? Unfortunately, gods donโt live in this world. Thinking carefully, youโre essentially wishing the Queen Mother dead,โ Ashley added.
Isolde frowned. โYour words are strange. I said the Queen Mother is omniscient; you imply I cursed her. Why are you so scheming? Forget it, I wonโt tell you. Just tell Prince Kamari. Also, why are you detaining my people?โ
Ashley looked at her judgmentally and said in frustration, โOh? Are those three County Princessโs people? I thought they were bandits. They know martial arts but conceal it. Only upon my arrival did the guards discover and apprehend them. I didnโt expect them to be your people.โ
Ashley changed the subject, asking coldly, โHowever, itโs strange. Why did your people stay in Zloimond without public registration? Do you have ulterior motives?โ
โMy husband, Oliver, had an accident in Zloimond. Is it unreasonable to send them to search for him?โ Isolde asked.
โI see!โ Ashley smiled slightly. โHowever, thereโs no need to look for him, County Princess. Mr. Valois has returned to the grave. His corpse has likely been devoured by wild wolves.โ
โHeโs dead? What are you laughing at?โ Isolde asked sternly.
Ashley remained calm. โHe has nothing to do with me. I donโt care about his life or death. Canโt I simply smile? Do you expect me to cry, County Princess?โ
Isoldeโs forehead throbbed as she suppressed her anger. โIt seems we clash. Leave. My men stay.โ
โI canโt stand it anymore. They were caught in Zloimond. If you want them back, follow me to the princeโs mansion to verify their identities,โ Ashley said proudly, her gentleness and indifference gone.
Isolde stood up. โAlright, Iโll go with you.โ
Ashley looked surprised. She stood and said, โIn that case, County Princess, please.โ
Isolde strode out. Anthony quickly followed. โWhere are you going?โ
Isolde replied, โTo the Kingโs residence. You stay and remember the Queen Motherโs decree. You must provide disaster relief.โ
Anthony hesitated, then stepped back, seeing her determination and confidence. โYes!โ
Isolde smiled. โDonโt worry, Iโm here on orders. The King will treat me well.โ She turned to Ashley. โMs. Charlie, isnโt it?โ
Ashley smiled. โOf course. County Princess, you are on orders. If we offend you, we are guilty of deceiving the King, a crime he cannot bear.โ
Isolde said, โThe three of them must remain here first.โ
Ashley only wanted Isolde. The three were insignificant. Isolde Langley alone was sufficient. โWeโll listen to the County Princess,โ Ashley said.
Ashley was a little disappointed. She expected someone acting under such a decree to be meticulous and far-sighted. Isolde, easily angered by a few words, proved to beโฆ disappointing.
But that was good. It saved her trouble. Moreover, the 3,000-strong force didnโt seem poised to attack Zloimond.
Ashley thought, Could the flood really be coming? No, it couldnโt be. This is definitely a cover.
After a few steps, Ashley stopped and said to Isolde with a smile, โCounty Princess, wait.โ
Isoldeโs lips curled into a faint smile, which vanished as she turned around, still angry. โWhat now?โ
Ashleyโs gaze was intense, encompassing every subtle expression on Isoldeโs face.
โWhat now?โ Isolde asked impatiently. โWhy do you keep looking at me? Letโs go.โ
Ashley smiled slowly. โI was rude. Since you said they were ordered to investigate the Great Marshalโs whereabouts, weโll make amends after the public inspection.โ
Isolde was stunned. โAre you saying I donโt need to go to the Kingโs mansion?โ
โWhy make you travel back and forth?โ Ashley asked.
Isolde shook her head. โItโs nothing. Iโm also going to see the King. Please lead the way.โ
Ashley ordered her men to release Vincenzo and the others. Then, she said to Isolde, โFarewell!โ
Isolde looked at her with disappointment. โTake care, Ms. Charlie.โ
Ashley smiled, mounted her horse, gave Isolde a deep look, and left.
Anthony sighed in relief. โI was really afraid you would leave with her.โ
Isolde also sighed. โShe is guarded. If she canโt find anything, she wonโt rashly take me back to the Princeโs mansion. Moreover, Iโm here on orders. If she canโt do it for me, sheโll think the Royal Court has reason to attack Zloimond. She's proceeding carefully.โ
Doug and Kolton walked out. Watching them leave, Kolton said, โThis woman is not simple.โ
โSheโs definitely not simple,โ Isolde agreed.
