Chapter 228: Sheโ€™s Definitely Not Simple

Isolde looked at Ashley. โ€œItโ€™s normal for him to overthink. Who wouldn't be concerned about the Royal Court troops suddenly arriving in the city?โ€

Ashley smiled slightly. โ€œSince bringing troops would make Prince Kamari hesitant, why did you bring them?โ€

Isolde noted the sharpness in Ashleyโ€™s slight smile and said helplessly, โ€œI came under the Queen Motherโ€™s decree. The Imperial Astronomers predicted trouble in Zloimondโ€”heavy rain and floods. The Queen Mother ordered me to cooperate with Zloimondโ€™s government to evacuate coastal residents and prevent mishaps.โ€

Ashleyโ€™s smile deepened. โ€œIf thereโ€™s a storm, it will be rain from the sky. How can that be a disaster? The Royal Court is far away in Heaven Mountain. I fear you donโ€™t understand the suffering of Zloimondโ€™s people.โ€

Isolde replied, โ€œI donโ€™t. Iโ€™m following orders. I planned to visit Kamariโ€™s mansion after settling in. I didnโ€™t expect Ms. Charlie to come personally. Please tell the King that the Queen Motherโ€™s decree is to evacuate coastal residents to avoid flooding.โ€

Ashley nodded. โ€œI will definitely tell him the truth.โ€

โ€œThank you!โ€ Isolde said.

Ashley tidied Isoldeโ€™s clothes, her actions dignified and exuding an invisible pressure.

โ€œBy the way, how did you know about me?โ€ Ashley asked, raising her eyes slightly.

Isolde answered honestly, โ€œBefore we arrived, the Queen Mother said the King has a confidante, Ashley Charlie, who would advise the King. โ€

Ashley was stunned. โ€œThe Queen Mother knows about me?โ€

โ€œYes, the Queen Mother is omniscient!โ€ Isolde replied.

Ashley laughed heartily, though a listener could detect sarcasm. โ€œThatโ€™s not a human, but a god. Are you worshipping the Queen as a god? Unfortunately, gods donโ€™t live in this world. Thinking carefully, youโ€™re essentially wishing the Queen Mother dead,โ€ Ashley added.

Isolde frowned. โ€œYour words are strange. I said the Queen Mother is omniscient; you imply I cursed her. Why are you so scheming? Forget it, I wonโ€™t tell you. Just tell Prince Kamari. Also, why are you detaining my people?โ€

Ashley looked at her judgmentally and said in frustration, โ€œOh? Are those three County Princessโ€™s people? I thought they were bandits. They know martial arts but conceal it. Only upon my arrival did the guards discover and apprehend them. I didnโ€™t expect them to be your people.โ€

Ashley changed the subject, asking coldly, โ€œHowever, itโ€™s strange. Why did your people stay in Zloimond without public registration? Do you have ulterior motives?โ€

โ€œMy husband, Oliver, had an accident in Zloimond. Is it unreasonable to send them to search for him?โ€ Isolde asked.

โ€œI see!โ€ Ashley smiled slightly. โ€œHowever, thereโ€™s no need to look for him, County Princess. Mr. Valois has returned to the grave. His corpse has likely been devoured by wild wolves.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s dead? What are you laughing at?โ€ Isolde asked sternly.

Ashley remained calm. โ€œHe has nothing to do with me. I donโ€™t care about his life or death. Canโ€™t I simply smile? Do you expect me to cry, County Princess?โ€

Isoldeโ€™s forehead throbbed as she suppressed her anger. โ€œIt seems we clash. Leave. My men stay.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t stand it anymore. They were caught in Zloimond. If you want them back, follow me to the princeโ€™s mansion to verify their identities,โ€ Ashley said proudly, her gentleness and indifference gone.

Isolde stood up. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll go with you.โ€

Ashley looked surprised. She stood and said, โ€œIn that case, County Princess, please.โ€

Isolde strode out. Anthony quickly followed. โ€œWhere are you going?โ€

Isolde replied, โ€œTo the Kingโ€™s residence. You stay and remember the Queen Motherโ€™s decree. You must provide disaster relief.โ€

Anthony hesitated, then stepped back, seeing her determination and confidence. โ€œYes!โ€

Isolde smiled. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m here on orders. The King will treat me well.โ€ She turned to Ashley. โ€œMs. Charlie, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Ashley smiled. โ€œOf course. County Princess, you are on orders. If we offend you, we are guilty of deceiving the King, a crime he cannot bear.โ€

Isolde said, โ€œThe three of them must remain here first.โ€

Ashley only wanted Isolde. The three were insignificant. Isolde Langley alone was sufficient. โ€œWeโ€™ll listen to the County Princess,โ€ Ashley said.

Ashley was a little disappointed. She expected someone acting under such a decree to be meticulous and far-sighted. Isolde, easily angered by a few words, proved to beโ€ฆ disappointing.

But that was good. It saved her trouble. Moreover, the 3,000-strong force didnโ€™t seem poised to attack Zloimond.

Ashley thought, Could the flood really be coming? No, it couldnโ€™t be. This is definitely a cover.

After a few steps, Ashley stopped and said to Isolde with a smile, โ€œCounty Princess, wait.โ€

Isoldeโ€™s lips curled into a faint smile, which vanished as she turned around, still angry. โ€œWhat now?โ€

Ashleyโ€™s gaze was intense, encompassing every subtle expression on Isoldeโ€™s face.

โ€œWhat now?โ€ Isolde asked impatiently. โ€œWhy do you keep looking at me? Letโ€™s go.โ€

Ashley smiled slowly. โ€œI was rude. Since you said they were ordered to investigate the Great Marshalโ€™s whereabouts, weโ€™ll make amends after the public inspection.โ€

Isolde was stunned. โ€œAre you saying I donโ€™t need to go to the Kingโ€™s mansion?โ€

โ€œWhy make you travel back and forth?โ€ Ashley asked.

Isolde shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Iโ€™m also going to see the King. Please lead the way.โ€

Ashley ordered her men to release Vincenzo and the others. Then, she said to Isolde, โ€œFarewell!โ€

Isolde looked at her with disappointment. โ€œTake care, Ms. Charlie.โ€

Ashley smiled, mounted her horse, gave Isolde a deep look, and left.

Anthony sighed in relief. โ€œI was really afraid you would leave with her.โ€

Isolde also sighed. โ€œShe is guarded. If she canโ€™t find anything, she wonโ€™t rashly take me back to the Princeโ€™s mansion. Moreover, Iโ€™m here on orders. If she canโ€™t do it for me, sheโ€™ll think the Royal Court has reason to attack Zloimond. She's proceeding carefully.โ€

Doug and Kolton walked out. Watching them leave, Kolton said, โ€œThis woman is not simple.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s definitely not simple,โ€ Isolde agreed.
