Chapter 27: No Harm in Being Prepared
Isolde smiled faintly. โYouโre not wrong. Killing you now would make all my wounds a wasted effort, wouldnโt it?โ
The butlerโs smile turned sly. โQuite so, my lady. Youโd best hold onto this small mercy. Who knows? You may yet find yourself back in the Dukeโs household.โ
Isolde tilted her head thoughtfully. โAh, youโve given me an idea. Iโve earned merit with the Royal Court. Becoming the young lady of the Dukeโs estate should hardly be a challenge now, should it?โ
The butlerโs eyes flickered with cunning. โYou speak reason.โ
With a smirk, Isolde added, โWell then, youโve earned yourself some credit for reminding me. Iโll spare you this once. Now go.โ
From the sidelines, Keith and Noelle listened in disbelief, certain they must have misheard. The butler struggled to his feet, shooting Isolde a cold, resentful glance. โMy gratitude, my lady.โ With that, he limped away.
Isolde entered Helenaโs chamber. Keith, the princessโs guard, was preparing medicine for Helena. Hearing about the butlerโs release, Helena burst out, โMiss, why let him go?โ
Isoldeโs calm smile didnโt falter. โWhy not? He had a fair point.โ
Helena stomped her foot, exasperated. โMy lady, this is madness! Even I know you canโt let a wolf back into the fold. If you couldnโt kill him, at least you could have taught him a lesson!โ
Isolde gently patted her flushed cheek. โCalm down, little one. If someone like you knows the dangers of letting a tiger return to its lair, do you really think I donโt?โ
Helenaโs eyes widened. โWaitโฆ you meant to let him go?โ
โExactly,โ Isolde said, rising carefully and steadying herself against the wall. โAt the very least, the Marquisโs household needs to believe I still intend to marry into their family.โ
Helena gaped, completely bewildered. โButโฆ why? I thought you wanted to break off the engagement?โ
โI do, and they already did. But think about it: this marriage was arranged by the Marquis himself, yet it was the Marchioness who called it off. She claimed Iโd brought shame on the family. That excuse worked when everyone thought Iโd disgraced myself. But now? Iโve earned royal favor and been granted a noble title. What grounds could they possibly have to refuse me now?โ
โButโฆ the marriage is already over!โ Helena cried, still at a loss.
Isolde smiled, enigmatic as ever, and left the room. Helena watched her go, wringing her hands in frustration, no closer to understanding her mistressโs intentions.
In the Eternal Brightness Pavilion, Matildaโs voice cut through the still air like a blade. โWhat did you say? That wretched girl still thinks she can marry into the Dukeโs estate? The engagement was annulledโwhat right does she have?โ
His promotion is all but guaranteed, triumphant from this campaign. He could easily rise to the rank of one of the Three Marquises, wielding power over the Bryndral Empire. How could she possibly give up the chance to climb so high?โ
Matilda sneered. โThe Marchioness despises her. I saw her relief the day the engagement was broken.โ
โBut the Marquis himself favors her,โ the butler replied bitterly. โThe Marchioness only annulled the match because of the scandalous elopement. Now that the truth is outโit was a misunderstandingโand the Royal Court has honored her.โ
Matildaโs expression turned grim. โAnd what of Eleanor? What will happen to her? You must come up with something!โ
The butler shook his head. โThereโs little that can be done, unless Isolde Langley were to dieโor commit another unforgivable offense.โ
Matilda collapsed into a chair, her face pale with worry. โNo. I wonโt let her take Eleanorโs place. She has struggled to earn the Marchionessโs favor, especially now that sheโs with child. If we lose this opportunity, everything weโve worked for will crumble. Worse still, weโll bring ruin upon ourselves.โ
The butler hesitated before speaking. โLady Eleanor must marry into the Eldermere householdโand quickly. Any further delay, and her condition will become all too obvious.โ
Matilda snapped, her voice sharp. โShe cannot go in as a concubine! If thatโs the case, sheโd be better off marrying into a family of equal standing where she can be a proper wife.โ
โShe has no choice now,โ the butler said quietly. โHer condition binds her fate. A concubineโs position is still within reach. If this child is a son, he will be the eldest, and even the Marchioness wouldnโt dare mistreat his mother.โ
He paused, lowering his voice. โAs for Isolde, we can turn to Marshal Blackwell for help. If we can keep her from marrying into the family, so much the better. But even if she succeeds, as long as she remains childless, she can be dismissed after three years.โ
Matildaโs eyes narrowed, her tone cold. โChildless, you say?โ
The butler gave a sinister chuckle. โItโs hardly difficult, Cousin. A single dose of the right remedy is all it takes.โ
A cruel light flickered in Matildaโs eyes. โYes. There is such a remedy.โ
The remedy was as ruthless as it was effective. For an unmarried girl, it meant she would never bear children. For a pregnant woman, it brought premature laborโor death for both mother and child.
โBut,โ the butler added cautiously, โit wonโt be easy. We need someone she trusts to give it to her.โ
Matilda smiled icily. โShe has always revered Michelle. If Michelle Yates tells her itโs a tonic to nourish her health, she will take it without question.โ
The butlerโs eyes brightened. โLady Michelle? Yes, of course. She trusts Lady Isolde completely. Before her marriage, Isolde followed her like a shadow. I remember when Lady Michelle wed, the girl cried for days.โ
โSend someone to the Marquis of Velmontโs estate,โ Matilda ordered. โTell Michelle to come home as soon as she can.โ
โYes!โ Matilda glanced at the butlerโs bandaged ear. โYou should rest for a few days. Youโve suffered enoughโwhipped and injured as you are. Go home and recover.โ
The butler bowed deeply. โThank you for your kindness, Cousin.โ
Matilda handed him some money. โYouโve endured much for us this time. Rest easyโyou wonโt go unrewarded for your loyalty.โ
The butler took the note, his face a mask of gratitude. โI owe everything to you and your brother, Cousin.โ
Matildaโs eyes turned cold again. โDo your work well, and there will be no shortage of rewards. But as for that woman in your householdโLady Cantrellโget rid of her. When you were in danger, she hid away. Beauty means nothing without loyalty. Sheโs a pretty face, yes, but a heartless one.โ
The butlerโs voice turned venomous. โThat harlot? Iโll see to her, rest assured.โ
As he limped out of the Velvet Wing, he was oblivious to the pair of eyes following his every step from the shadows.
That evening, Keith reported back to Isolde Langley. โThe butler beat Lady Cantrell senseless and threw her out. He didnโt give her a penny and even threatened anyone who might take her in. Said theyโd be making an enemy of himโand the Marshalโs household.โ
Isoldeโs lips curved into a faint smile. โAs expected. Is she settled?โ
โAs you instructed, I found her a quiet house in a secluded part of the city,โ Keith said.
โWell done,โ Isolde replied with a nod.
โBut is it really necessary to go so far for a mere butler?โ Keith asked, puzzled.
โOf course not,โ Isolde said lightly. โThe butler himself is of no importance. But he serves Milton and Matilda. He knows far more than he should.โ In her past life, sheโd learned the manโs weakness: a few drinks would loosen his tongue, and he would spill secrets to his women. That day, sheโd overheard him confiding in Lady Cantrell. Keeping Lady Cantrell isnโt costly, she thought. And thereโs no harm in being prepared.
