Chapter 316: Practicing How to Cry
Hattie reported the latest developments from the Valen family. โLady Isolde, itโs obvious Martha has ulterior motives. Why donโt you deal with her?โ
Isolde replied calmly, โSheโs only trying to secure her future. It has nothing to do with us, so why should we stand in her way?โ
โBut if she marries into the Valen family, sheโll inevitably be your enemy.โ
โThatโs her skill, Hattie. Everyone has their own path to walk, their own right to fight for their future. If I eliminated every person who might oppose me, or blocked every possible threat before it materializedโฆ wouldnโt that be too cruel? As long as she doesnโt harm anyone and only gambles with her own life, what does it matter to us? Whether she succeeds or fails, she bears that burden alone. Of course, if she does come after me one dayโฆ then Iโll deal with her accordingly.โ
Hattie thought for a moment before nodding. โYouโre right. As long as she doesnโt harm anyone?โ
โExactly,โ Isolde nodded.
โBut Martha has a vicious heart. Sheโs harmed Clark before.โ
โAnd even Clark isnโt holding it against her anymore, so neither should we. I only asked you to keep an eye on her for our own protectionโto ensure weโre not caught off guard if she does try something.โ
Isoldeโs philosophy was simple: If others donโt provoke me, I wonโt provoke them. Besides, she had no objection to Martha marrying William. If anything, it would disgust Margaret. If it served her purposes, she might even give Martha a push in the right direction.
Just then, outside the room, there was a burst of excited voices. โHelena!โ Britney and Noelleโs delighted calls rang out.
Isoldeโs eyes brightened. โHelenaโs back.โ
Indeed, Helena had returned, beaming with joy as she stepped inside to congratulate Isolde. Isolde smiled at her. Since Helenaโs marriage, she had looked rosier, healthierโclearly, her husband treated her well.
โWhat brings you back? Not busy managing the shop?โ Isolde teased.
Helena huffed playfully. โWhatโs more important than your wedding? I came back to help you prepare!โ
โYouโre no longer my maid, but Iโm truly happy youโre here.โ Isolde pulled her down to sit beside her, giving her an assessing look. โYouโve put on some weight. Seems like youโre living well.โ
A faint blush crept over Helenaโs face. โItโs not weightโฆ Iโm pregnant.โ
โYouโre what?โ Isolde gasped in delight. โReally? How far along?โ
โJust two months.โ Helenaโs smile was full of warmth.
โNot at all. No nausea, no discomfortโjust a great appetite,โ Helena said, rubbing her belly, the picture of a blissful expectant mother.
โReally? Thatโs wonderful!โ Isolde marveled. She remembered how wretched she had felt when she had been pregnant in her past lifeโconstant sickness, unbearable discomfort.
Helena laughed. โListen to you! You talk like someone whoโs already been through childbirth! How do you even know what it feels like?โ
Isolde chuckled, quickly masking the shadow in her eyes. โItโs common knowledge for all women.โ
Noelle teased, โHelena, your husband must be over the moon, right?โ
Helenaโs blush deepened. โEver since he found out, he hasnโt let me set foot outside. He feeds me like Iโm a pig for slaughter! Natashaโs even worseโshe was going to come with me today, but I begged her not to follow me like a watchdog.โ
Isolde laughed. โShow-off.โ
Seeing Helena so happy filled her heart with genuine joy.
Britney suddenly asked, โHelena, do you crave spicy food or sour food?โ
โSour,โ Helena answered curiously. โWhy?โ
โThen youโre definitely having a boy!โ Britney declared confidently.
Helena laughed. โAnd since when did you become an expert?โ
โWhen my mother was pregnant with my little brother, she only wanted sour things.โ
Helena chuckled. โBoy or girl, it doesnโt matter.โ
โTrue, theyโre all the same.โ Isolde looked at Helenaโs still-flat belly. It hadnโt started to show yet, but she had clearly gained a little weight.
A child. That was a thorn in her heart.
Just then, Esme entered the room. Hearing that Helena was pregnant, she grinned. โSuch good fortune! Itโs a wonderful sign. After our lady marries, sheโll surely conceive quickly as well.โ
โOf course! Maybe sheโll even have twins!โ Britney giggled.
Isolde rolled her eyes. โEnough of that! Iโm not even married yet, and youโre already talking about children. Do you want people to laugh at me?โ
โThis is when you should be blushing, not scolding us,โ Hattie teased.
โExactly! Whereโs the bashful bride?โ Hazel chimed in.
Isolde rolled her eyes again.
Britney covered her mouth and laughed. โI think Lady Isolde will have a hard time crying when she leaves for her wedding. She looks too happyโsheโll probably be grinning all the way out the door.โ
โThat wonโt do!โ Esme objected. โA bride must cry when she leaves home!โ
โIf she canโt cry, weโll smoke her eyes with pepper!โ Britney suggested mischievously.
โNo need. Just press her pressure pointโsheโll wail like a newborn!โ Hazel said matter-of-factly.
The lively discussion sent everyone into laughter.
In her past life, she had wept bitterly on her wedding day. But she had not been happy. So why shouldnโt she laugh as she left for marriage this time?
Just then, Nicole entered, hearing the cheerful chatter. She smiled. โWhatโs all the laughter about?โ
โLady Nicole,โ the maids greeted her, curtsying.
Britney quickly spoke up. โWe were just discussing how to make Lady Isolde cry on her wedding day!โ
Nicole laughed. โCrying is easy. Just pout a little, and the tears will come.โ
โItโs not that simple!โ Britney argued.
โOh, but it is. Watch.โ Nicole turned to Isolde, locked eyes with her, andโฆ
Within seconds, her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Her lips quivered ever so slightly, and just like that, two perfect teardrops slid down her cheeks. Her expression was heartbreakingly sorrowful.
The entire room fell silent in awe.
At that moment, Keith, Collin, and Anthony entered, pausing at the sight of Nicoleโs tear-streaked face.
Keithโs brows furrowed. โWhatโs going on? Why is she crying?โ
Caught off guard, Nicole hastily wiped her tears, flustered. โIโI wasnโt crying.โ
Britney giggled and explained, โLady Nicole was demonstrating how to cry for Lady Isolde. Practicing for the wedding day.โ
Anthony glanced at Isolde, then grunted, โPractice? What for? Just give her a whack with a stickโsheโll cry for her father and mother both.โ
Britney burst into laughter. โMarshal, you and Hazel think exactly alike! She suggested the same thing.โ
โPerfect match,โ someone quipped, and the room erupted in laughter again.
Anthony shot a look at Hazel and muttered, โItโs the most effective method. If others agree with me, it just proves all of your ideas are useless.โ
Hazel smirked. โAgreed.โ
