Chapter 316: Practicing How to Cry

Hattie reported the latest developments from the Valen family. โ€œLady Isolde, itโ€™s obvious Martha has ulterior motives. Why donโ€™t you deal with her?โ€

Isolde replied calmly, โ€œSheโ€™s only trying to secure her future. It has nothing to do with us, so why should we stand in her way?โ€

โ€œBut if she marries into the Valen family, sheโ€™ll inevitably be your enemy.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s her skill, Hattie. Everyone has their own path to walk, their own right to fight for their future. If I eliminated every person who might oppose me, or blocked every possible threat before it materializedโ€ฆ wouldnโ€™t that be too cruel? As long as she doesnโ€™t harm anyone and only gambles with her own life, what does it matter to us? Whether she succeeds or fails, she bears that burden alone. Of course, if she does come after me one dayโ€ฆ then Iโ€™ll deal with her accordingly.โ€

Hattie thought for a moment before nodding. โ€œYouโ€™re right. As long as she doesnโ€™t harm anyone?โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Isolde nodded.

โ€œBut Martha has a vicious heart. Sheโ€™s harmed Clark before.โ€

โ€œAnd even Clark isnโ€™t holding it against her anymore, so neither should we. I only asked you to keep an eye on her for our own protectionโ€”to ensure weโ€™re not caught off guard if she does try something.โ€

Isoldeโ€™s philosophy was simple: If others donโ€™t provoke me, I wonโ€™t provoke them. Besides, she had no objection to Martha marrying William. If anything, it would disgust Margaret. If it served her purposes, she might even give Martha a push in the right direction.

Just then, outside the room, there was a burst of excited voices. โ€œHelena!โ€ Britney and Noelleโ€™s delighted calls rang out.

Isoldeโ€™s eyes brightened. โ€œHelenaโ€™s back.โ€

Indeed, Helena had returned, beaming with joy as she stepped inside to congratulate Isolde. Isolde smiled at her. Since Helenaโ€™s marriage, she had looked rosier, healthierโ€”clearly, her husband treated her well.

โ€œWhat brings you back? Not busy managing the shop?โ€ Isolde teased.

Helena huffed playfully. โ€œWhatโ€™s more important than your wedding? I came back to help you prepare!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re no longer my maid, but Iโ€™m truly happy youโ€™re here.โ€ Isolde pulled her down to sit beside her, giving her an assessing look. โ€œYouโ€™ve put on some weight. Seems like youโ€™re living well.โ€

A faint blush crept over Helenaโ€™s face. โ€œItโ€™s not weightโ€ฆ Iโ€™m pregnant.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re what?โ€ Isolde gasped in delight. โ€œReally? How far along?โ€

โ€œJust two months.โ€ Helenaโ€™s smile was full of warmth.

โ€œNot at all. No nausea, no discomfortโ€”just a great appetite,โ€ Helena said, rubbing her belly, the picture of a blissful expectant mother.

โ€œReally? Thatโ€™s wonderful!โ€ Isolde marveled. She remembered how wretched she had felt when she had been pregnant in her past lifeโ€”constant sickness, unbearable discomfort.

Helena laughed. โ€œListen to you! You talk like someone whoโ€™s already been through childbirth! How do you even know what it feels like?โ€

Isolde chuckled, quickly masking the shadow in her eyes. โ€œItโ€™s common knowledge for all women.โ€

Noelle teased, โ€œHelena, your husband must be over the moon, right?โ€

Helenaโ€™s blush deepened. โ€œEver since he found out, he hasnโ€™t let me set foot outside. He feeds me like Iโ€™m a pig for slaughter! Natashaโ€™s even worseโ€”she was going to come with me today, but I begged her not to follow me like a watchdog.โ€

Isolde laughed. โ€œShow-off.โ€

Seeing Helena so happy filled her heart with genuine joy.

Britney suddenly asked, โ€œHelena, do you crave spicy food or sour food?โ€

โ€œSour,โ€ Helena answered curiously. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™re definitely having a boy!โ€ Britney declared confidently.

Helena laughed. โ€œAnd since when did you become an expert?โ€

โ€œWhen my mother was pregnant with my little brother, she only wanted sour things.โ€

Helena chuckled. โ€œBoy or girl, it doesnโ€™t matter.โ€

โ€œTrue, theyโ€™re all the same.โ€ Isolde looked at Helenaโ€™s still-flat belly. It hadnโ€™t started to show yet, but she had clearly gained a little weight.

A child. That was a thorn in her heart.

Just then, Esme entered the room. Hearing that Helena was pregnant, she grinned. โ€œSuch good fortune! Itโ€™s a wonderful sign. After our lady marries, sheโ€™ll surely conceive quickly as well.โ€

โ€œOf course! Maybe sheโ€™ll even have twins!โ€ Britney giggled.

Isolde rolled her eyes. โ€œEnough of that! Iโ€™m not even married yet, and youโ€™re already talking about children. Do you want people to laugh at me?โ€

โ€œThis is when you should be blushing, not scolding us,โ€ Hattie teased.

โ€œExactly! Whereโ€™s the bashful bride?โ€ Hazel chimed in.

Isolde rolled her eyes again.

Britney covered her mouth and laughed. โ€œI think Lady Isolde will have a hard time crying when she leaves for her wedding. She looks too happyโ€”sheโ€™ll probably be grinning all the way out the door.โ€

โ€œThat wonโ€™t do!โ€ Esme objected. โ€œA bride must cry when she leaves home!โ€

โ€œIf she canโ€™t cry, weโ€™ll smoke her eyes with pepper!โ€ Britney suggested mischievously.

โ€œNo need. Just press her pressure pointโ€”sheโ€™ll wail like a newborn!โ€ Hazel said matter-of-factly.

The lively discussion sent everyone into laughter.

In her past life, she had wept bitterly on her wedding day. But she had not been happy. So why shouldnโ€™t she laugh as she left for marriage this time?

Just then, Nicole entered, hearing the cheerful chatter. She smiled. โ€œWhatโ€™s all the laughter about?โ€

โ€œLady Nicole,โ€ the maids greeted her, curtsying.

Britney quickly spoke up. โ€œWe were just discussing how to make Lady Isolde cry on her wedding day!โ€

Nicole laughed. โ€œCrying is easy. Just pout a little, and the tears will come.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that simple!โ€ Britney argued.

โ€œOh, but it is. Watch.โ€ Nicole turned to Isolde, locked eyes with her, andโ€ฆ

Within seconds, her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. Her lips quivered ever so slightly, and just like that, two perfect teardrops slid down her cheeks. Her expression was heartbreakingly sorrowful.

The entire room fell silent in awe.

At that moment, Keith, Collin, and Anthony entered, pausing at the sight of Nicoleโ€™s tear-streaked face.

Keithโ€™s brows furrowed. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Why is she crying?โ€

Caught off guard, Nicole hastily wiped her tears, flustered. โ€œIโ€”I wasnโ€™t crying.โ€

Britney giggled and explained, โ€œLady Nicole was demonstrating how to cry for Lady Isolde. Practicing for the wedding day.โ€

Anthony glanced at Isolde, then grunted, โ€œPractice? What for? Just give her a whack with a stickโ€”sheโ€™ll cry for her father and mother both.โ€

Britney burst into laughter. โ€œMarshal, you and Hazel think exactly alike! She suggested the same thing.โ€

โ€œPerfect match,โ€ someone quipped, and the room erupted in laughter again.

Anthony shot a look at Hazel and muttered, โ€œItโ€™s the most effective method. If others agree with me, it just proves all of your ideas are useless.โ€

Hazel smirked. โ€œAgreed.โ€
