Chapter 329: What Are You Trying to Do?

Margaret had a pounding headache. After briefly entertaining the guests, she retreated to her chambers. Agnes and Eleanor followed suit.

Eleanor was restless. The moment she finished her soup, she left. Susan, a girl from Vermelle Hall, would know what to do. And yet, Eleanor couldnโ€™t shake off the unease in her heart. Though she was using Susan to pave the way for her own future favor, ensuring her leverage against both Isolde and Williamโ€™s future wife, the thought of Susan being on equal footing with her gnawed at her pride. After all, William barely spared her a glance these days. If she didnโ€™t have someone speaking for her in his presence, sheโ€™d never regain her standing. But Susan? She was just a woman from Vermelle Hall. The idea of being on the same level as her was downright revolting.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to go out and socialize, Mother, then donโ€™t. Itโ€™s just Oliverโ€™s wedding, not my brotherโ€™s,โ€ Agnes said.

Margaret scoffed coldly. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m doing this for Oliver? Youโ€™ve seen how your father treats me. If I donโ€™t make an appearance today, do you have any idea how much gossip will spread?โ€

Agnes seethed. โ€œThis is all Isoldeโ€™s fault! Because of her, Father blames you!โ€ She cast Margaret an annoyed glance. โ€œWe were supposed to teach her a lesson today, but you stopped us! If not for you, she wouldโ€™ve made a complete fool of herself at her own wedding!โ€

Pabloโ€™s voice was sharp. โ€œSheโ€™s already married into the family. If sheโ€™s humiliated, wouldnโ€™t that be a disgrace to the entire Langley family? Your grandfather returned today to maintain appearances. If anything happened, do you think he wouldnโ€™t be livid? And youโ€”an outsider now that youโ€™re marriedโ€”should stop meddling in your motherโ€™s household affairs. Last time, you shoved Cristina into his bed as a concubine, and now weโ€™re stuck with her. She acts all high and mighty, doesnโ€™t even respect me. If it werenโ€™t for you, if I didnโ€™t have to protect your reputation from Oliverโ€™s gossip, do you think Iโ€™d tolerate this? Stay out of it. As for Isolde, Iโ€™ll handle it.โ€

Agnes still wasnโ€™t happy, but Margaretโ€™s harsh tone made her hold her tongue.

Just then, William strode into the room. Eleanor lifted her gaze to him, her jealousy spiking at the sight of his slightly disheveled hair and the wrinkles in his clothes. That wretched Susanโ€”she wanted to scream. But before she could say a word, William suddenly dropped to his knees.

Margaret startled. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

William raised his head, his tone unwavering. โ€œI beg you to approve my marriage.โ€

โ€œMarriage?โ€ Eleanor shrieked. โ€œYou want to marry Susan? No! She can only be a concubine!โ€

Williamโ€™s gaze snapped to her, sharp and severe. โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€

Eleanor realized she had misspoken in haste, but she was unwilling to back down. She knew Agnes was unreliable, so she fell to her knees, weeping. โ€œYou canโ€™t do this to me! William canโ€™t marry Susan! Susan isโ€ฆโ€

Agnes, furious, shoved her. โ€œShut up and let Mother speak!โ€

Margaret cast Eleanor a cold glance but ignored her. Instead, she turned back to William. โ€œWho exactly do you want to marry?โ€

William took a deep breath. โ€œMartha. She and Iโ€ฆ itโ€™s already done.โ€

โ€œYou fool!โ€ Margaretโ€™s fury exploded as she struck him across the face. โ€œAre you out of your mind?! The Langley family is already drowning in scandal, and you want to marry one of their women? Are you completely brainless? Forget it. I will never allow it!โ€

Williamโ€™s jaw tightened. โ€œIf you refuse, Iโ€™ll go to Father. I ruined her reputationโ€”I have to take responsibility.โ€

Margaret, though livid, forced herself to think rationally. She needed to understand what had happened before deciding how to dismantle it.

Eleanor, meanwhile, spun to look at Agnes, her face drained of color. Martha? she thought, horrified. Wasnโ€™t it supposed to be Susan?!

Agnes lowered her gaze, equally perplexed.

William explained, โ€œI had a few drinks earlier and went to my room to rest. Just as I was settling in, I heard that Ashley had fallen into the water. I rushed out to check, but it wasnโ€™t Ashleyโ€”it was Martha. She was soaked, shivering. I took her to my room to change, andโ€ฆ I lost control. Ashley saw everything. I have to take responsibility.โ€

Margaret narrowed her eyes. โ€œYou lost control? How, exactly? Were you watching her undress?โ€

Williamโ€™s face darkened. โ€œNo, she hadnโ€™t even started changing. I donโ€™t know what came over meโ€ฆโ€

Margaretโ€™s expression sharpened. William wasnโ€™t the type to act on impulse. Something wasnโ€™t right.

โ€œThink carefully,โ€ she pressed. โ€œDid Martha give you anything to eat or drink? Did you notice any strange scents on her?โ€

William shook his head. โ€œNo.โ€

Margaret didnโ€™t believe it. He must have been drugged; there was no other explanation.

She turned to Eleanor. โ€œEarlier, you mentioned Susan. Who is she?โ€

โ€œShe called herself a cousin,โ€ William answered before Eleanor could. โ€œShe was helping Martha and addressed her as โ€˜cousinโ€™ too.โ€

Margaretโ€™s mind whirred. A cousin? That was a problem.

Instead of revealing her thoughts, she continued questioning. โ€œDid you bring Susan?โ€

Eleanor nodded, her face ghostly pale. โ€œYes. I brought her to introduce her to William, to have her pay respects.โ€

Margaret scoffed. โ€œSame generation, and she needs to pay respects? Unnecessaryโ€ฆโ€

Williamโ€™s expression suddenly shifted. He pointed at Eleanor, his voice thunderous. โ€œYou gave me water earlier. Did you put something in it?โ€

Eleanor frantically shook her head. โ€œIโ€”I didnโ€™t! I wouldnโ€™t dare!โ€

โ€œLiar! Right after drinking it, I felt unbearably hot. I tried to walk it off, but before I could, the servants came running inโ€ฆ It was you! You wretched woman!โ€ Furious, William struck Eleanor hard across the face, sending her reeling.

Eleanor clutched her cheek, sobbing. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t me! It was Agnes! She told me to do it! She wanted you to take Susan as a concubine!โ€

Agnes nearly smacked Eleanor herself. Was this girl an idiot? If youโ€™re going down, at least take it to your grave!

Williamโ€™s fury turned to Agnes. โ€œYou again! First, you led me to the Langley estate and humiliated me in front of Isolde. Now, youโ€™ve drugged me? What the hell are you trying to do?!โ€
