Chapter 344: Murderer

Agnes shot Mell a vicious glare.

Mellโ€™s lips trembled. โ€œMy lordโ€ฆ itโ€™s true that I purchased arsenic last night, but I swearโ€”I didnโ€™t poison Lady Cristina! I only bought it for medicinal use. I have a festering wound, and someone told me that arsenic could cure it quickly. Thatโ€™s the only reason I bought it!โ€

Isolde scoffed. โ€œHow convenient. You neither bought it earlier nor laterโ€”only on the exact night Cristina was poisoned? What are the odds?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know why it happened that way!โ€ Mellโ€™s head hung low, her entire body trembling.

โ€œFine. You claim you have a wound. Show me where it isโ€”Iโ€™ll examine it myself.โ€ Isoldeโ€™s voice was icy as she stepped forward.

Mell remained silent, her forehead pressed against the ground in submission.

โ€œMell, look at me,โ€ Isolde crouched down, lifting Mellโ€™s chin so their eyes met. โ€œAfter Cristina cut her wrist, the physician prescribed medicine. Her chamber has a small stove, meaning her decoction was brewed in her own kitchen. Only a select few could have entered. Tell me, Mellโ€”could it be that you were one of them?โ€

Mell fell backward onto the floor. โ€œIโ€ฆโ€

Suddenly, Cristinaโ€™s maid, Demi, pointed an accusing finger at her. โ€œYes! Last night, when I was making the medicine, you were there! You spilled vinegar on my dress, and I left to change. You were alone in the kitchen after that!โ€

Mellโ€™s lips quivered. โ€œI didnโ€™t do it.โ€

Isolde sneered. โ€œDidnโ€™t you? Then letโ€™s ask Cristinaโ€”aside from drinking the medicine, did you eat anything else last night?โ€

Cristina shook her head. โ€œNo.โ€

Her eyes bore into Mell, her expression shifting from suspicion to sheer horror. โ€œIt was you?โ€

Mell burst into tears. โ€œLady Cristina, I never meant to harm you!โ€

Her words were an admission in themselves.

Allanโ€™s face twisted in fury. โ€œYou wretched servant! You dared to poison your mistress? How many lives do you think you have? Guards! Send her to the authorities at once!โ€

Cristina, shaking like a leaf in the wind, suddenly spoke. โ€œWait.โ€

She approached Mell, her gaze sharp as a blade. โ€œA mere maid like you wouldnโ€™t dare to do this alone. Who ordered you? Who bought you? If you donโ€™t tell me, Iโ€™ll kill you myself.โ€

Mellโ€™s terrified eyes darted toward Agnes. โ€œLady Agnes! Save me!โ€

The room went dead silent as everyone turned to Agnes.

Isolde chuckled. โ€œIs that so? Then letโ€™s report this to the authorities. Let them investigate.โ€

โ€œReport to the authorities? The evidence has already been manipulated in your favor. Who would believe me once Iโ€™m accused?โ€ Agnes stepped forward and kicked Mell to the ground, her voice turning cruel. โ€œWretched servant! I have treated you well, yet you dare collude with outsiders to frame me?โ€

Mell crawled back, her face filled with terror. โ€œIโ€ฆ I was blinded by greed! Lady Isoldeโ€™s people gave me silver. They only told me to teach Cristina a lessonโ€”I didnโ€™t know it would nearly kill her!โ€

Isolde laughed lightly. โ€œOh? I bribed you? When?โ€

โ€œLast nightโ€ฆ Lady Isolde sent someone to meโ€ฆ they gave me 10,000 taels!โ€ Mell pointed a trembling finger at Hattie.

โ€œDo tell,โ€ Isoldeโ€™s smile was all sweetness. โ€œExactly when did this happen?โ€

โ€œDuring the hour of the pigโ€ฆ last night.โ€ Mell stammered.

Hattie turned to Ryker. โ€œRyker, where was I at that time?โ€

Ryker answered immediately. โ€œLast night, Hattie was busy entertaining guests in the bridal chamber. She was with Rosemary, Princess Aveline, and several other ladies. I personally escorted them to Ningser Pavilion.โ€

Mell paled. โ€œIโ€”I must have misspoken. It was during the hour of the dog!โ€

Isoldeโ€™s lips curved into an amused smirk. โ€œAh, so I possess clairvoyance now? I somehow foresaw that Cristina would attempt suicide and require medication, so I preemptively bribed you to poison it? Is that what youโ€™re suggesting?โ€

Seeing Mell faltering under Isoldeโ€™s relentless questioning, Agnes grew impatient and snapped. โ€œEnough, Isolde! Stop trying to weasel your way out of this. Youโ€™ve hated Cristina from the start. Itโ€™s no surprise youโ€™d try to get rid of her the moment you set foot in this house. Youโ€™re utterly vile!โ€

Isoldeโ€™s smile vanished, her expression turning frosty. โ€œVery well. No more questions. Iโ€™ll summon the Southern Watch to handle this matter.โ€

At the mention of the Southern Watch, Mell collapsed, shaking uncontrollably. โ€œI confess! It was Lady Agnes! She ordered me! She told me that convincing Cristina to commit suicide wasnโ€™t workingโ€”Cristina cared too much for her life. She barely shed a few drops of blood before backing out! So Lady Agnes instructed me to buy arsenic and mix it into her medicine. But the dose wasnโ€™t meant to kill her outrightโ€”just enough to make it seem like another failed suicide attempt. Lady Agnes knew Lord Allan hates causing trouble. He would rather pressure Lady Isolde into accepting Cristina as a concubine than let the scandal grow!โ€

โ€œLies!โ€ Agnes shrieked, lunging at Mell and clawing at her in fury. โ€œIโ€™ll tear your mouth apart! How dare you frame me? Do you have a death wish?โ€

Isolde yanked Agnes back, her voice deathly cold. โ€œYou know exactly whether sheโ€™s telling the truth. I have done nothing to you, yet you schemed against me the moment I arrived. This is bullying, plain and simple. Our grandfather and the family elders are hereโ€”I ask them to uphold justice and clear my name.โ€

Arthur, his face filled with bitter disappointment, stared at Agnes. โ€œIs it true? Give me an answer.โ€

โ€œYou have two choices,โ€ Isoldeโ€™s voice cut through the air like steel. โ€œOne: confess. Two: I summon the Southern Watch.โ€

Agnes scoffed. โ€œThe Southern Watch? Their commander is your mentor, and their deputy commander is Oliver! You control them!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Isolde said without a hint of shame.

โ€œDisobedient girl! Will you only confess after being dragged to court?โ€ Pablo slammed his palm against the table, his voice thunderous.

Agnes flinched, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. โ€œFather, even you donโ€™t believe me? Youโ€™d trust an outsider over your own daughter?โ€

Pabloโ€™s face twisted in fury. โ€œMell is your personal maid! Would she really risk her life for a mere 10,000?โ€

Cristina, trembling with rage, hissed through gritted teeth. โ€œYou did this? You tried to kill me? Youโ€™re a monster! Iโ€™ll have Arthur divorce you!โ€

Agnes snapped. โ€œKill you? I was helping you!โ€

She pointed at Cristina, her voice laced with resentment. โ€œLook at youโ€”still acting like a spoiled princess! I did this for you! If you had just listened to me before and not broken off your engagement, you wouldnโ€™t have ended up a concubine! But noโ€”you had to be arrogant, and now look where you are! And even as a concubine, youโ€™re still unsatisfied! I tried to secure your position, yet you lacked the courage to even stage a proper suicide! You wanted everything without sacrifice! Isolde was rightโ€”you were too proud to accept reality but too weak to fight for more.โ€

Cristina trembled violently. โ€œYou dare say you were helping me? You almost killed me! Youโ€ฆ you murderer!โ€
