Chapter 364: Rosemaryโ€™s Solution

Cristina covered her face, sobbing bitterly. โ€œYou keep telling me to leave, but have you ever asked if I want to? Theyโ€™ve humiliated meโ€”how could I just walk away? Am I, Cristina, meant to be trampled on? Who do they think they are?!โ€

โ€œEven so, is it worth ruining your entire life?โ€ Arthur snapped, his anger barely contained.

Isolde sat beside Oliver, silent, her expression unreadableโ€”an observer rather than a participant.

August, ashamed beyond words, sighed deeply. โ€œThe situation is already dire. What do you suggest we do?โ€

Allanโ€™s voice was steady but firm. โ€œThere are two choices: either you take her back home, or William takes her in.โ€

Augustโ€™s shoulders loosened slightly at hearing that the Valen family was still willing to accept her. It was a relief, given the alternative.

โ€œPublicly, we must maintain a unified story,โ€ Allan continued. โ€œWe will say that Rosemary originally arranged for Cristina to be Williamโ€™s concubine. We must keep Oliver out of this.โ€

Cristinaโ€™s rage flared. โ€œNo! I am Oliverโ€™s concubine! Everyone knows it! You think you can just erase that to protect his reputation? Never! Rosemary forced me to become his concubine. I never even wanted him! And when I refused to submit to him, I had no choice but to rebel in the only way I couldโ€”by taking another man!โ€

โ€œShut your mouth!โ€ Arthur finally lost his patience. โ€œDo you even realize what youโ€™re saying? Where does that leave you? Where does that leave our familyโ€™s honor?โ€

โ€œHonor?!โ€ Cristina screamed back. โ€œAfter what theyโ€™ve done to me, you still care about your honor? If you truly loved me, you wouldnโ€™t be thinking about your own pride right now!โ€

Arthurโ€™s hand rose instinctively, as if to strike her again, but when he met her tear-filled, defiant gaze, he clenched his fist instead. โ€œWe have spoiled you beyond reason.โ€

Isolde suppressed a smirk. This is what happens when you set your own trap and fall right into it.

Oliver leaned in close and murmured, โ€œIsoldeโ€ฆโ€

She shushed him gently, whispering back, โ€œLetโ€™s not interfere. Someone else is about to step in. We wonโ€™t let this nightโ€™s trouble be in vain.โ€

Oliver understood immediately. Yes, if someone else took charge of the situation, they could stay out of it entirely. And, more importantly, he could finally rid himself of this ridiculous concubine rumor.

A slow, deliberate voice cut through the air from outside. โ€œDid I just hear someone call me a โ€˜thieving womanโ€™? Or did I mishear?โ€

A figure stepped into the room, her steps measured, her presence suffocating. Everyone turned to lookโ€”Rosemary had arrived. Alone. No attendants. Just herself.

Cristinaโ€™s loathing for her burned brightly, but she couldnโ€™t understand why Arthur seemed so afraid of this woman.

Rosemaryโ€™s voice was calm, almost amused. โ€œSo, was it you who called me a thieving woman?โ€

Cristina scoffed and turned her face away in defiance.

Arthur immediately stepped forward, bowing low. โ€œLady Rosemary, please forgive her. It is my failure as a brother that she has grown so reckless.โ€

Then he turned and barked at Cristina, โ€œApologize. Now.โ€

โ€œWhy should I apologize to her?โ€ Cristina snapped. โ€œIf not for her, would I have been reduced to a concubine?โ€

Arthurโ€™s face drained of color. Does she even realize what sheโ€™s doing? Does she think Rosemary is someone to be trifled with?

Rosemary merely smiled. โ€œLet it be. After all, I did joke with her that day. Who knew she would take it so seriously and actually stay here in the Valen family? She is your sister, Arthur. A woman of her status should never have been a concubineโ€”what a laughable notion. But we can settle this easily. Everyone present knows the truth, and I will make sure thatโ€™s the version that reaches the outside world.โ€

Cristina sneered. โ€œSpare me your false kindness. You think you can cover up the truth to save his reputation? It wonโ€™t work. You can silence others, but you canโ€™t silence me. What I say matters mostโ€”people will believe my words.โ€

Rosemary chuckled, shaking her head. โ€œSuch theatrics. Very well. Then perhaps I owe you a proper apology. Why donโ€™t you come to my estate for a few days? Iโ€™ll personally host you, throw a grand feast in your honor, and make amends properly. How about that?โ€

Cristinaโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œYou think I donโ€™t see through your schemes? Save your breath.โ€

Rosemary sighed, stretching lazily. โ€œThis entire situation is getting tedious. Letโ€™s settle it as I suggested.โ€

She turned to Arthur, clapping a hand on his shoulder. โ€œYou will personally escort Cristina to my residence. She must be there within the hour.โ€

Arthurโ€™s face went ghostly pale. โ€œLadyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ Rosemary said smoothly. โ€œI wonโ€™t harm a single hair on her head. I wonโ€™t even raise my voice. I will simply educate her in the ways of the world. If you find her the slightest bit injured, you may hold me accountable.โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t dare,โ€ Arthur mumbled, sweat forming on his brow. Hold Rosemary accountable? I would need a dozen lives for that.

โ€œIโ€™m not going!โ€ Cristina puffed up her cheeks in defiance.

Rosemary ignored her, keeping her gaze on Arthur. โ€œShe may be foolish, but you understand, donโ€™t you? Sometimes, itโ€™s better to give a few slaps yourself than to let others do it for you. Understand?โ€

Arthur swallowed hard and nodded. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

Isolde stood gracefully. โ€œIt would be an honor.โ€

Before leaving, Rosemary inclined her head toward Allan. โ€œAllan, rest well. No need to trouble yourself with the foolishness of the younger generation.โ€

โ€œSafe travels,โ€ Allan replied, clearly relieved that she was taking over.

She nodded at Pablo. โ€œPablo, Iโ€™m leaving.โ€

โ€œTake care,โ€ Pablo said, his earlier fury now abatingโ€”he knew the matter would soon be resolved.

As Isolde and Rosemary walked side by side into the night, Rosemary let out a small laugh. โ€œClever, little one. You managed to turn this whole mess into my problem.โ€

Isolde feigned innocence. โ€œUnfair! You were the one who arranged for Cristina to be a concubine. Itโ€™s only right to consult you, no?โ€

Rosemary smirked. โ€œI know exactly what youโ€™re up to. But tell me, is there really any reason to keep Cristina in the Valen household?โ€

Isolde shrugged. โ€œNot my concern. Their house, their rules.โ€

Rosemary narrowed her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re quite the tactician. Now Williamโ€™s household will be a battlefield of three warring women, keeping Margaret occupied. Meanwhile, you sit back and enjoy the show.โ€

Isolde blinked, feigning innocence. โ€œBut we all live under the same roof. If they fight, I wonโ€™t get a moment of peace either.โ€

โ€œDrop the act. I know you too well.โ€ Rosemary chuckled. โ€œOriginally, I named Cristina Oliverโ€™s concubine in a moment of irritation, thinking youโ€™d throw her out. But since she was so determined to stay, I suppose she must learn her lesson.โ€

โ€œHow will you make her change her story?โ€ Isolde asked. โ€œShe insists she was Oliverโ€™s concubine. If she doesnโ€™t retract that, Oliver will be humiliated.โ€

Rosemaryโ€™s smile turned sharp. โ€œLeave that to me. Give me half an hour, and sheโ€™ll say whatever I want her to say.โ€

She glanced at Isolde. โ€œPerhaps you should visit my estate tomorrow. Have coffee. Let Sadie check your pulse.โ€

Isolde grinned. โ€œIโ€™ll be there.โ€
