Chapter 366: To the Valen Family

Allan, feeling sorry for Oliver and Pablo, who had to attend court early the next day, said, โ€œYou two should head back. Weโ€™ll discuss this matter tomorrow. Win or lose, weโ€™re familyโ€”letโ€™s not let this cause any hard feelings.โ€

Pablo, burdened with guilt, sighed. โ€œIโ€™ll be entering the palace soon to teach the Crown Prince. I was hoping for a few quiet days before that, but instead, I keep getting caught up in these endless troubles. I feel truly ashamed.โ€

Allan gave a reassuring nod. โ€œWith a family this big, how could there not be the occasional conflict? Itโ€™s nothing too serious, and weโ€™re already close to resolving it. Once William gets married, everything will settle down.โ€

โ€œHim?โ€ Pablo shot William a glare, his voice dripping with disdain. โ€œI doubt heโ€™ll ever amount to anything in this lifetime.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s still your son. If he turns out useless, the fault lies with you as his father. Heโ€™s not young anymore. Now that heโ€™s preparing for marriage, he should also start looking for a proper position. He was trained in martial artsโ€”itโ€™s time he got some real experience in the military.โ€

Margaretโ€™s face changed upon hearing this. She quickly interjected, โ€œFather, sending him to the military might not be the best idea.โ€

โ€œAnd why not?โ€ Pabloโ€™s irritation flared as he turned to her, eyes sharp.

Margaret hesitated before carefully replying, โ€œIโ€™m only worried that people will accuse you of favoritism.โ€

โ€œFavoritism? Nonsense!โ€ Pablo scoffed. โ€œIf he joins the military, heโ€™ll have to start from the bottom, just like Oliver. Only with real battle achievements can he earn a promotion. Do you think Oliver was made a general the moment he enlisted?โ€

Margaret inwardly scoffed. That was pure luckโ€”Oliver happened to enlist just as war broke out, and with the right people looking out for him, he secured military merit effortlessly. But now, in an era of peace, William would be stuck in endless training with no foreseeable advancement.

She knew better than to argue now. If Pablo truly insisted, she would handle it when the time came. For now, it was more important to find William another opportunityโ€”if he kept drifting aimlessly like this, who knew when heโ€™d finally get a chance to prove himself?

Back in their quarters, Isolde and Oliver exchanged looks, both finding the nightโ€™s events absurd.

โ€œShe really thought ruining my reputation was the best way to get back at me? How foolish,โ€ Oliver muttered.

โ€œReckless,โ€ Isolde said simply.

โ€œIt just proves she was raised poorly. Iโ€™ve seen many women in my life, but never one so utterly shameless.โ€

Isolde smirked. โ€œOh? And just how many women have you seen?โ€

Oliver faltered, then muttered, โ€œNot that many. But still, if someone had done something this outrageous before, I wouldโ€™ve heard about it.โ€

Isolde chuckled. โ€œWell, at least all this drama led to something usefulโ€”Rosemary finally made it clear that the so-called concubinage was just a farce. Now you donโ€™t have to be bothered by it anymore.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true.โ€ Oliver, satisfied, pulled his wife into his arms and fell asleep.

The Next Morning

The couple rose early. Oliver left for court, while Isolde dressed carefully, stepping out with Hattie and Hazel just as the sun peeked over the horizon.

At the Valen estate, Jonathan was also preparing for court. His wife, having woken early, knew Isolde would be visiting today and had the servants prepare a lavish breakfast.

Just as the meal was ready, a servant came in to announce, โ€œMadam, Lady Isolde has arrived.โ€

โ€œInvite her in,โ€ Rosemary said before turning to another maid. โ€œHas Sadie woken up?โ€

โ€œYes, Madam, sheโ€™s in the apothecary.โ€

โ€œTell her to come. Let her check Isoldeโ€™s pulse while sheโ€™s here.โ€

โ€œYes, Madam.โ€ The maid hurried off.

Isolde was led into the side hall, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the sumptuous breakfast spread. She grinned. โ€œYouโ€™re too good to me. You knew Iโ€™d come on an empty stomach, so you prepared all this?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t flatter yourself,โ€ Rosemary snorted. โ€œIโ€™d be eating the same amount whether you were here or not.โ€

Isolde laughed. โ€œThen I should come over every morning to steal a meal.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™tโ€”I canโ€™t afford to host you daily.โ€ Rosemary gave her a sidelong glance. โ€œLet me guessโ€”you wouldnโ€™t come this early for anything serious. Youโ€™re here to watch the show, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Isolde sipped her coffee, unfazed. โ€œHowโ€™s she doing? Still being stubborn?โ€

โ€œNo idea. She was sent over last night and placed in the guest quarters. I havenโ€™t spoken to her yet,โ€ Rosemary said coolly. Then, waving over a servant, she ordered, โ€œGo ask Cristinaโ€”does she still insist on being Oliverโ€™s concubine?โ€

The servant bowed. โ€œYes, Madam.โ€

Isolde raised an eyebrow but didnโ€™t ask further, content to sip her coffee.

A moment later, Sadie entered. Isolde immediately stood, beaming. โ€œGreetings to my future sister-in-law.โ€

Sadie, unfazed, even seemed pleased. โ€œYouโ€™re here early. Have a seat.โ€

Isolde couldnโ€™t help but think Sadie had an impressively thick skin.

โ€œMother, did Father take it?โ€ Sadie asked.

โ€œHe did. Would he dare refuse after you personally gave the order?โ€ Rosemary replied.

Isolde smiled. โ€œYouโ€™re thoughtfulโ€”Clark is lucky to have you.โ€

โ€œI made too much. Do you want some?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ Isolde didnโ€™t hesitate. โ€œYouโ€™re so considerate of me, Iโ€™m truly flattered.โ€

Sadie shot her a look. โ€œIโ€™m not thinking of you. Iโ€™m thinking of Clark. If you go back and see what he has, heโ€™d definitely give it all to you. Heโ€™s too generous, and he dotes on you. I had to prepare extra just to make sure he gets his share.โ€

Isolde burst into laughter. โ€œSo I owe it all to Clark.โ€

Sadie pulled out a wrist cushion. โ€œPut your hand here.โ€

Obediently, Isolde placed her wrist on the cushion, watching Sadie as she examined her pulse.

Sadie always had an air of quiet grace. At least when she was being Sadie. As she concentrated, her long lashes cast delicate shadows over her face. She was exactly the type Clark would likeโ€”gentle, composed, with an almost ethereal beauty.

No wonder Clark blushed every time he saw her.

After a moment, Sadie withdrew her hand. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a bit of internal heat. Iโ€™ll prescribe some herbal medicineโ€”boil and drink it for three days.โ€

โ€œIn this cold weather? I thought I was perfectly calm,โ€ Isolde joked.

โ€œYouโ€™re far from calm.โ€ Sadie finished writing the prescription and glanced at her. โ€œSomethingโ€™s bothering you. Whatโ€™s on your mind?โ€

โ€œNothing at all. Iโ€™m the happiest Iโ€™ve ever been,โ€ Isolde replied. She hesitated, then admitted, โ€œMaybe itโ€™s because Iโ€™m too happy. I canโ€™t shake the feeling that fate wonโ€™t allow it. That something bad is bound to happen.โ€

โ€œUgh. Youโ€™re impossible,โ€ Rosemary scoffed.

Sadie, however, was thoughtful. โ€œItโ€™s not uncommon. When someone who has suffered greatly finally finds happiness, they become afraid of losing it. Hard times leave no space for doubtโ€”you can only fight to survive. But the moment you have something to lose, fear creeps in.โ€

Isolde shivered slightly. Something to lose. That thought alone was terrifying.
