Chapter 372: I Will Not Attend the Funeral

+8 Pearls

Oliverโ€™s voice was firm. โ€œNot just herโ€”I donโ€™t want to go to the funeral either, let alone wear mourning clothes.โ€

Esme nodded. โ€œI knew she wouldnโ€™t go, and honestly, I donโ€™t think she should. But since sheโ€™s refusing, we need a strategy. Thatโ€™s why I called you hereโ€”to discuss how we handle this.โ€

Oliver asked, โ€œDo you have a plan?โ€

โ€œThere is a way,โ€ Esme admitted, hesitating before continuing, โ€œbutโ€ฆit would be cruel to Geoffrey.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

Esme took a deep breath. โ€œIf the King were to punish Isolde, it would be on the grounds of unfilial conduct. Death is the ultimate matter, and Prudence was still considered her ancestor. A County Princess refusing to observe mourning rites would be seen as a scandal.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆwhat if Isoldeโ€™s refusal to wear mourning clothes was actually an act of filial piety?โ€

Oliverโ€™s gaze sharpened. โ€œYou meanโ€ฆto have Geoffrey petition the court himself? To publicly accuse Prudence of murder?โ€

Esme sighed. โ€œYes. But a son accusing his motherโ€”that itself is an act of defiance, and Geoffrey would be the first to be branded unfilial.โ€

Oliver exhaled. โ€œWhich is why you hesitated. Isolde would never agree to this. But if you told Geoffrey, heโ€™d be willing to do itโ€”even if it cost him everything. Thatโ€™s the dilemma.โ€

โ€œShe would refuse outright,โ€ Esme agreed. โ€œThatโ€™s why we canโ€™t tell her.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€™s your alternative?โ€ Oliver asked.

He mulled it over. Truthfully, there werenโ€™t many options.

โ€œIโ€™ll speak to Doug tomorrow,โ€ he finally said. โ€œIf either of us can present evidence of her crimes, maybe that would be enough.โ€

Esme shook her head. โ€œThat wonโ€™t work. The King might not believe it. Without undeniable proof, he wonโ€™t order an investigation.โ€

Oliver frowned. โ€œIsolde refusing to attend the funeral will not stay a secret. Once people realize she isnโ€™t there, someone is bound to bring it up. And if word spreads outside, those with ulterior motives will use it against her.โ€

โ€œWhat if we inform the Queen Mother first and have her step in?โ€

Esme sighed. โ€œIsolde isnโ€™t just a County Princessโ€”sheโ€™s a military general. The Queen Mother may sympathize with her, but the King rules with filial piety as his guiding principle. If she intervenes, it would be seen as obstructing the Kingโ€™s moral authority.โ€

โ€œThe Queen Motherโ€™s position is delicate. How can a mother be seen preventing her son from upholding virtue? She wonโ€™t be able to step in.โ€

โ€œWe can only hope,โ€ Esme murmured.

โ€œEnough worrying,โ€ Oliver said, patting her shoulder. โ€œI should go back before Isolde starts wondering.โ€

โ€œAlright, but have you eaten? I can make something for you.โ€

โ€œI ate with Doug earlier. Donโ€™t trouble yourselfโ€”get some rest.โ€

With that, he left.

That night, the Valen household was anything but peaceful. At Sunset Chamber, Cristina had spent nearly half an hour screaming insults at the top of her lungs. But no one came to stop her. No one even passed by to watch. It was as if the entire estate had collectively decided she wasnโ€™t worth their attention. In the end, she was the only one who sufferedโ€”shivering in the freezing cold until she had no choice but to slink back inside.

The next morning, Allan woke early and immediately inquired, โ€œHave Oliver and Isolde returned to her family estate?โ€

The servant replied, โ€œNo, Master Allan. Theyโ€™re still at Ningser Pavilion.โ€

Allan frowned. โ€œWhy havenโ€™t they left? They should have returned last night. The Langley family doesnโ€™t have many to oversee the funeral arrangementsโ€”Oliver and Isolde should be there to help.โ€

Heidi, draping a warm cloak over his shoulders, said lightly, โ€œI heard Vance has returned. With him and the elders handling things, Isoldeโ€™s absence wonโ€™t matter much. She is an outsider now, after all. A granddaughter married away doesnโ€™t need to rush back.โ€

The servant added, โ€œOliver seems to have no intention of leaving either. I just saw Miniroโ€”he said Oliver is heading back to Southern Watch today.โ€

Allan frowned deeper. โ€œThen what about Isolde? She could have gone ahead of him.โ€

โ€œNo movement from Ningser Pavilion,โ€ the servant said.

Allanโ€™s brows knitted together. โ€œSheโ€™s really not leaving? The funeral is today.โ€

โ€œA woman not attending her own grandmotherโ€™s funeralโ€ฆthatโ€™s unthinkable,โ€ Heidi mused, brushing a stray white hair off his cloak. โ€œPerhaps something is holding her up. If she doesnโ€™t leave, sheโ€™ll surely come to pay her respects here first. We can ask her then.โ€

Allan nodded. โ€œShe wouldnโ€™t be so careless. Kody, go fetch her to have breakfast with us before we leave.โ€

Allan was a man of discipline. He no longer involved himself in many celebrations, but funeralsโ€”especially one of such high standingโ€”were obligations he never neglected.

Isolde greeted him with a calm expression. โ€œTell my grandfather Iโ€™ll be there shortly.โ€

Kody noted that she showed no sign of preparing for a journey. He hesitated before asking, โ€œLady Isolde, will you be returning to the Langley estate today? Shall I have the carriage prepared?โ€

As one of the senior servants in the estate, Kody was respected enough to ask without overstepping.

Isolde gave a serene smile. โ€œNo need. Iโ€™m not going.โ€

Kody blinked. โ€œYou meanโ€ฆyouโ€™re not going today? Orโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going at all,โ€ she said simply.

Kody was stunned. โ€œWhy?โ€

Isoldeโ€™s smile remained, but she didnโ€™t answer. โ€œJust return to Grandfather. Iโ€™ll be there shortly.โ€

Sensing that she wasnโ€™t going to explain, Kody didnโ€™t press further. He also chose not to report it immediatelyโ€”after all, if she truly wasnโ€™t going, she would tell Allan herself.

At Rannard Chamber, where Allan was having breakfast, Isolde entered with Esme. Allan immediately noticed her calm demeanorโ€”no sorrow, no grief. And, more importantly, no sign of preparation to leave.

โ€œI thought you would have left last night,โ€ Allan said, his tone neutral but edged with disapproval.

Isolde bowed. โ€œI did not.โ€

โ€œWell, obviously,โ€ Allan said, setting down his tea. โ€œYouโ€™re standing here.โ€

Heidi tried to smooth the tension. โ€œCome, have breakfast first. You can leave after eating.โ€

But Isolde didnโ€™t sit.

โ€œIโ€™m not going,โ€ she said instead. โ€œI already informed Kody.โ€

Allanโ€™s head snapped up. His voice sharpened. โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€

โ€œI will not be attending the funeral,โ€ Isolde said evenly.

The room fell into stunned silence. Allanโ€™s palm struck the table.

โ€œAbsurd!โ€ he roared. โ€œThat was your grandmother! You are in Argentum, and you refuse to go to her funeral? Do you realize how disgraceful this is?โ€

He narrowed his eyes, his voice lowering into something more dangerous.
