Chapter 374: She Was Not Blessed

Isolde smiled faintly. โ€œIโ€™m not upset. Whatโ€™s there to be upset about?โ€

She stepped into the carriage and turned to Hattie. โ€œGo to Southern Watch and tell Oliver I wonโ€™t be coming home for dinner tonight. After checking on the shops, Iโ€™ll be heading to the Sharp estate.โ€

โ€œShould I ask Oliver to come with you?โ€ Hattie asked.

โ€œNo need. Let him go home. Allan will definitely question him, and if Oliver isnโ€™t there, itโ€™ll only make him angrier. He can take the heat for meโ€”Iโ€™d rather have some peace and quiet.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€ Hattie nodded and left to fetch a horse.

After making her rounds at the shops, Isolde had little interest in conversing with Collin. Without lingering, she made her way to the Sharp estate.

Outside the manor, a carriage stood waiting as servants loaded it with various supplies. Seeing Isolde arrive, the gatekeeper quickly rushed inside to announce her presence. She followed close behind, stepping into the main hall where the family had gathered. After offering her respects, she took a seat beside Natasha.

โ€œGrandfather, Grandmother,โ€ she greeted. โ€œAre you going on a trip?โ€

Oliver responded, โ€œNatasha hasnโ€™t been feeling well. Since sheโ€™s still able to travel, I thought Iโ€™d take her out for a while.โ€

โ€œIf sheโ€™s unwell, wouldnโ€™t it be better for her to rest at home?โ€ Isolde frowned.

Natasha took her hand gently, patting it in comfort. โ€œResting wonโ€™t change anything. Death comes for us allโ€”Iโ€™m not afraid. From the day I married your grandfather, he promised to take me across the land, to see the mountains and rivers of the world. But he was always busy with military affairs, and I followed him from battlefield to battlefield instead. Now, at last, our sons are grown, the empire is stable, and he has a little time. He wants to take me traveling before itโ€™s too late.โ€

Hearing these words, Isoldeโ€™s heart clenched with sorrow. She leaned against Natashaโ€™s arm, her gaze shifting subtlyโ€”Patricia was dabbing at her eyes. And when she looked at her grandfather, she saw it tooโ€”the silent grief on his face.

A bad feeling struck her. Not wanting to confront it outright, she turned to Patricia and smiled. โ€œDidnโ€™t you say you had a hairpin for me last time? I havenโ€™t forgottenโ€”I want it now.โ€

Natasha chuckled. โ€œSuch a little thing, and youโ€™re still thinking about it? Do you really believe Patricia wouldnโ€™t give it to you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be right back,โ€ Isolde told Natasha, then grabbed Patriciaโ€™s hand and tugged her toward the hallโ€™s exit.

Once they reached a quiet corridor, she turned, her expression serious. โ€œTell me the truth. Is Grandmotherโ€ฆ very ill?โ€

Patricia hesitated, then sighed. โ€œI knew I couldnโ€™t hide it from you, but Natasha forbade us from telling you. The imperial physicians came just two days ago. They saidโ€ฆ she may not last the month.โ€

Isolde felt as if lightning had struck her. Her voice trembled. โ€œNoโ€ฆ thatโ€™s impossible. She looks fineโ€”when I last saw her, she wasnโ€™t even sick!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s been sick for years, Isolde. Sheโ€™s only survived this long because of expensive medicine and the thought of seeing you again. But her organs have long since deteriorated. Honestly, when we left Sinmour City, the doctors said she wouldnโ€™t survive the journey. But she endured. She held onโ€”long enough to see you married. But it has been so, so hard. The medicine she takes makes her vomit almost daily, sometimes even blood. The only reason she seems well now is because the Queen Mother sent a special tonic to sustain her. But it wonโ€™t last. The end is near.โ€

Tears streamed down Patriciaโ€™s face as she spoke. Isolde felt as if something inside her had been shattered beyond repair.

Natasha isโ€ฆ dying? She had thought they still had so much time together.

โ€œThen why is she leaving?โ€ she whispered hoarsely.

โ€œTheyโ€™re not going far,โ€ Patricia said softly. โ€œJust to Montlins Manorโ€”the estate Natasha gifted to your mother long ago. When your mother was little, Natasha used to take her there to pick dates in the hills. She saidโ€ฆ if she were to pass, she wanted it to be in a place filled with happy memories. So your grandfather has taken leave from court to accompany her there. Once everything is settled, Iโ€™ll be going too.โ€

Isolde staggered back against the wall, then slowly crouched down, covering her face with both hands. Tears spilled through her fingers. She wasnโ€™t ready. She couldnโ€™t accept this.

โ€œIf she can go peacefully, with no more painโ€ฆ isnโ€™t that a kindness?โ€

But even as she said it, Patricia couldnโ€™t stop her own tears. The two of them wept silently, until Christine came hurrying over.

โ€œEnough. Both of you, stop this crying! Natasha must not suspect anything. If she sees even a flicker of sorrow on Isoldeโ€™s face, sheโ€™ll grow suspiciousโ€”and then she wonโ€™t be able to leave for Montlins Manor in peace.โ€

Patricia wiped her tears and turned to Isolde. โ€œCome to my room. Wash your faceโ€”donโ€™t let her see you like this.โ€

Isolde swallowed down the sobs clawing at her throat and nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

She followed Patricia inside, washed away the evidence of her tears, and reapplied her makeup. Looking in the mirror, she forced herself to smile. Once, twiceโ€”until it looked natural. She had to hide it. Only then did she return to the hall.

Natasha looked a little tired, but when she saw Isolde wearing her new hairpin, her eyes lit up. She reached out and cupped Isoldeโ€™s face, murmuring, โ€œHow beautifulโ€ฆ how truly beautifulโ€ฆโ€

Isolde met her loving gaze, and her heart twisted painfully. Tears threatened again, so she quickly leaned against Natashaโ€™s chest, whispering, โ€œHow long will you be gone? What if I miss you too much?โ€

โ€œYou silly girl,โ€ Natasha laughed softly. โ€œI wonโ€™t be far. Just a little trip. Maybe Iโ€™ll stay at Montlins Manor for a while. If you miss me, come find me there.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll go home and pack right nowโ€”Iโ€™ll go with you,โ€ Isolde said quickly.

Her grandfather, Garrett, looked at her with a complicated expression before chuckling. โ€œAnd here I thought we were going on a romantic trip, just the two of us. Do you really want to be a third wheel?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re newly married, Isolde,โ€ Natasha said gently. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t leave the Valen estate so soon. Be patientโ€”if you truly miss me, come to Montlins Manor later.โ€

She held Isoldeโ€™s hand, her dry fingers stroking the back of it.

โ€œI want to go now,โ€ Isolde murmured, her voice choked.

โ€œNo nonsense,โ€ Natasha chided with a soft smile. โ€œYouโ€™re the Valen familyโ€™s young madam now. You must act the part. Donโ€™t act like a child.โ€

Patricia added, โ€œYes, and Allan and Heidi wonโ€™t be away for long. Once things settle, you can visit her at the manor.โ€

โ€œAfter lunch,โ€ Natasha said warmly. โ€œAnd itโ€™s good youโ€™re hereโ€”we made lamb stew today, your favorite.โ€

Isolde swallowed down her emotions and forced herself to smile. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll eat.โ€

โ€œAnd afterward, Iโ€™ll send you off.โ€
