Chapter 395: Embarrassing Words

Nicole blushed. โ€œStop it. Thereโ€™s nothing certain yetโ€”youโ€™re getting ahead of yourself.โ€

Isolde smiled. โ€œTomorrow, when I enter the palace for my audience with Queen Mother, Iโ€™ll bring it up to the princess.โ€

Nicoleโ€™s emotions wavered between excitement and anxiety. It wasnโ€™t that she thought too lowly of herself, but given her familyโ€”her disgraceful parents and her brotherโ€™s reputationโ€”who in Argentumโ€™s noble circles would take her seriously? Yet stillโ€ฆ she couldnโ€™t help but hope.

The next morning, Isolde woke early.

โ€œYou could sleep in a little longer,โ€ Esme urged. โ€œQueen Mother has other consorts to receive first. You wonโ€™t need to be there immediately.โ€

โ€œI couldnโ€™t sleep anyway,โ€ Isolde admitted. She hadnโ€™t rested wellโ€”her dreams had been muddled, and her mind was restless.

Noelle prepared warm water for her to wash, while Esme applied a light powder to mask the dark circles beneath her eyes.

โ€œHow does your chest feel today?โ€ Esme asked.

โ€œBetter. Oliver left me medicine. I took one last night and woke up feeling less suffocated.โ€

โ€œGood. Take another after breakfast,โ€ Esme instructed.

Isolde chuckled. โ€œThis medicine is rare. I shouldnโ€™t waste it.โ€

โ€œYour health is more important. If we need more, weโ€™ll find a way,โ€ Esme said firmly.

โ€œFine, fine. Iโ€™ll take another dose.โ€

After breakfast, Isolde swallowed another pill before setting off. For this visit to the palace, she only brought Esme along. Hattie and Hazel remained at the estate to manage affairs.

Upon arriving at Mystic Palace, Rowena led them to a side chamber. โ€œQueen Mother will see you shortly. The consorts should be leaving soon.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Isolde said.

Rowena studied her face. โ€œYou look better today. Oliver was so anxious when he came seeking medicine for youโ€”Queen Mother was worried as well. Take care of yourself.โ€

Isolde felt a pang of warmth. โ€œI will. Thank you.โ€

Rowena stepped out, but instead of the expected ten-minute wait, it was fifteen before she returned.

โ€œAshley was meant to come pay respects this morning as well,โ€ Rowena explained, โ€œbut her attendants claimed she was unwell and had summoned an imperial physician. She will arrive later. The other consorts have now left. Queen Mother is ready for you.โ€

Isolde nodded and followed her inside. The palace attendants were clearing away tea sets when they entered. Thelma sat at the head of the room, draped in elegant robes, her expression calm yet weary. Across from her, Queen Catherine was nibbling on snacks. At Isoldeโ€™s arrival, Catherine put down her treats and studied her closely.

Isolde stepped forward, kneeling. โ€œYour Majesties, I greet you both. May you enjoy peace and longevity.โ€

Catherineโ€™s gaze softened. โ€œYour fatherโ€™s funeral is settled?โ€

โ€œYes, Your Majesty.โ€

Catherine sighed. โ€œSuch a pity. He may not have been as sharp in recent years, but once, he was a formidable man.โ€

Thelma cast her a glance but said nothing. Some people, no matter how often corrected, never learned the art of diplomacy.

Isolde knelt deeper. โ€œI have come to express my gratitude for Your Majestiesโ€™ kindness and grace.โ€

Catherine gestured. โ€œRise, rise. The floor is cold. And oh, you poor thingโ€”no parents left, and your husband is an orphan as well. Truly, you two are pitiful.โ€

Isolde hesitated, unsure how to respond to such blunt words.

โ€œSit down,โ€ Catherine said, waving a hand.

Isolde bowed again and took her seat.

โ€œBring her something warm to drink,โ€ Catherine ordered. โ€œLook at her, pale as a ghost. Havenโ€™t been sleeping, have you? So tragic. Orphans are truly the most unfortunate in this world.โ€

Thelma resisted the urge to sigh. Catherine had developed a newfound sense of compassion in recent years, but her words had yet to catch up with her intentions.

Judith approached with a steaming bowl. โ€œQueen Mother prepared this tonic for you, Lady Isolde. She had it brewing early this morning, knowing youโ€™d be coming. Drink while itโ€™s hot.โ€

Isolde looked at Thelma gratefully. โ€œThank you, Queen Mother.โ€

โ€œDrink,โ€ Thelma said simply.

Catherine leaned forward. โ€œWhatโ€™s this about? Are you ill?โ€

โ€œYou must be careful with your health. Youโ€™re still young. Grief is one thing, but donโ€™t let it consume you.โ€ Catherine sighed deeply. โ€œTruly tragic.โ€

Isolde silently sipped her tonic, willing herself not to cry.

โ€œYou know,โ€ Catherine mused, โ€œI still donโ€™t understand why Geoffrey hanged himself. So many ways to go, but hanging? I heard the body stiffens horribly. The tongue sticks out. And then thereโ€™s theโ€ฆ loss of bodily control. When they cut him down, there must have beenโ€ฆ a mess.โ€

Isolde froze mid-sip, her hands trembling. She had expected sympathy. Not this. She could barely swallow. Her chest constricted, the air around her growing suffocating.

โ€œLady Isolde, donโ€™t be too heartbrokenโ€”โ€

Thelma shot Catherine a glare. โ€œJudith, bring Queen Catherine another plate of snacks.โ€

Catherine waved a hand. โ€œIโ€™m not hungry anymore. Talking about this makes me feel anxious.โ€

Thelmaโ€™s patience thinned. โ€œThen perhaps I should have medicine sent to your palace. You can rest there instead?โ€

โ€œOh, donโ€™t trouble yourself! Iโ€™ll just take the tonic here. No need for all that hassle.โ€ Catherine beamed, entirely oblivious.

Thelma exhaled slowly, reigning in her irritation. Catherine was well-meaning. Truly, she was. But her words? Like daggers. Unintentional, yet cutting all the same. And worst of allโ€”she had no idea.
