Chapter 420: Rileyโs Confession
Isolde, with a teasing smile, said, โIf I really sold the mountain, wouldnโt my mother scold me to death? That mountain was bought by her, after all. Iโm just trying to scare them, but honestly, I do plan to sell it.โ
Clark, confused, looked at her. โWhat exactly are you doing? You say you wonโt sell, but you are going toโwhatโs really going on here?โ
Isolde smiled and said nothing, letting the mystery hang in the air.
Clark, still puzzled, turned to Oliver. โDo you know what she means?โ
Oliver chuckled. โOf course I do. Sheโs being perfectly clear.โ
โClearly?โ Clark frowned, looking between the two of them. โSo, are we selling it or not?โ
โSheโs not selling it to just anyone, but she could sell it to the Langley family,โ Oliver replied with a grin.
โBut they canโt afford it,โ Clark retorted.
โThe Langley family isnโt just those few people. Arenโt you a part of the Langley family too?โ Oliver teased.
Clark was momentarily taken aback. โMe? Sell it to me? I donโt have 10 million.โ
โSell it to you for one thousand,โ Isolde said with a playful smirk. โWhen they come, weโll say weโre preparing to sell the mountain at the government office. Weโll get the paperwork sorted, and the deed will be transferred to your name.โ
โThat canโt be right. One thousand canโt buy a mountainโitโs practically giving it away. I canโt accept that,โ Clark said, shaking his head.
โItโs a family matter. Donโt worry about it,โ Isolde said, her voice light. โYouโre my motherโs son, and when it comes to my fatherโs funeral, youโve been helping out with the arrangements. You have a right to share in what they left behind. After all, you gave me the title of Marquiseโif anyoneโs getting a good deal here, itโs me.โ
Clark rolled his eyes. โYouโre making it sound like this was always yours.โ
Oliver, watching them exchange polite refusals, chuckled. โGeoffrey and Prunella would probably rest easy knowing you two get along so well.โ
At that moment, Anthony entered, his footsteps echoing in the tent. โIsolde, Riley wants to offer a prayer for Geoffrey, and Lawson and the others are waiting outside.โ
Isolde, unfazed, replied, โIโm not stopping them. Iโm angry with them, not my father. If they want to visit my father, let them come. But if they approach my fatherโs coffin without a shred of shame or guilt, Anthony, make sure they know what I think of that.โ
Anthony nodded, heading back outside. Moments later, his voice rang out, loud enough for everyone to hear: โGeoffreyโs body has been here for days, but they still wonโt let him inside. A man who served the Eryndral Empire for years, and now he canโt even enter the church, canโt even rest in the family grave. How do you think the people will talk about you if this gets out? Youโll have to live with that shame.โ
โYou canโt hurt him, but you can hurt his daughter. If you donโt feel guilty standing before his coffin, then go ahead and enter.โ
Oliver, who had overheard the exchange, looked at Anthony with surprise. โAnthony, youโre getting pretty good at this.โ
Isolde grinned. โHeโs got a way with words. He knows how to handle these situations.โ
Oliver laughed. โIf they still have the nerve to come in after that, they must be completely shameless.โ
Before anyone could say more, the flap of the tent opened. It wasnโt the Langley family, but Riley.
Anthony followed him inside. โLawsonโs still outside. Heโll come in later.โ
โLet them wait,โ Isolde said coolly.
Clark looked confused. โWhy?โ
Isolde smirked. โWho knows? Theyโre just saving face. After Anthonyโs words, they couldnโt possibly come in without feeling utterly shameless.โ
Riley, who had been arrogant and distant earlier, now entered the tent with a completely different attitude. He bowed slightly, his tone more respectful. โGreetings, Oliver. Greetings, Isolde. Greetings, Clark.โ
โNot necessary,โ Isolde replied, her voice flat.
Riley quickly said, โPlease forgive me. I was in the wrong yesterday. Iโll make sure to explain everything to the Langley family, please rest assured, Marquise.โ
โWhether you explain or not doesnโt matter. A clear conscience needs no explanation. My father wonโt be falsely accused of causing Prudenceโs death just because of a few words from you,โ Isolde said coldly.
โTruly, itโs all a misunderstanding. I never said that. When Vance spoke about Geoffrey in front of the Langley family, I didnโt speak up or defend him. Iโve been away handling other matters and honestly didnโt know the full story. Iโm not trying to defend myself, Iโm just telling the truth. Please donโt be upset,โ Riley said, his voice apologetic.
Isoldeโs gaze turned to him, a faint smile on her lips. โRiley, are you here to offer your prayer for my father?โ
Riley sighed softly. โIt seems youโve misunderstood me.โ He stepped forward, bowing three times before the coffin. โGeoffrey, rest in peace.โ
After his bows, he turned to Oliver and smiled faintly. โI havenโt had a chance to congratulate you both on your wedding yet. When you return to Argentum, Iโll be sure to send a proper gift.โ
Oliverโs response was icy. โWe didnโt invite you to our wedding, so donโt bother with any gifts.โ
Rileyโs smile faltered, and he awkwardly laughed. โOf course, of course. My apologies. I mustโve overstepped. I shouldnโt have mentioned it.โ
He glanced at Isolde, who turned her head to the side, avoiding his gaze. Oliverโs face was completely cold.
Isolde, his eyes filled with desperation. โMarquise, I was wrong. Please, forgive me this once.โ He looked up at her, his expression a picture of pleading.
Isolde, who had always been somewhat lenient with eunuchs, especially given Dougโs background, had always shown some compassion. However, Rileyโs actions were unforgivable. His involvement in forging the tombstone was enough to earn him a small punishment, but she had no intention of ruining him entirely, especially since he was a person close to Catherine. She preferred to avoid getting too entangled in palace matters.
Seeing him beg, Isolde raised an eyebrow. โAlright, tell me, was Ashley the one who instructed you to do this?โ
Riley, no longer daring to hide the truth, immediately confessed. โYes, it was Ashley. She visits Catherine every day, morning and night, always so attentive, and won her favor. One day, I made a mistake in front of Catherine, and she scolded me. Ashley comforted me, saying Catherine was upset over certain matters, and advised me to be more cautious. She also gave me a way to atone for my actions.โ
Rileyโs voice trailed off, and he seemed visibly regretful, as if he regretted ever listening to Ashley.
Isolde, sensing there was more to the story, urged, โContinue.โ
Riley hesitated before speaking again, his voice quieter. โAshley told me to act, and I did. She said it would help her cause, butโฆ looking back, I realize now it was a mistake. I wish I hadnโt done it.โ
