Chapter 420: Rileyโ€™s Confession

Isolde, with a teasing smile, said, โ€œIf I really sold the mountain, wouldnโ€™t my mother scold me to death? That mountain was bought by her, after all. Iโ€™m just trying to scare them, but honestly, I do plan to sell it.โ€

Clark, confused, looked at her. โ€œWhat exactly are you doing? You say you wonโ€™t sell, but you are going toโ€”whatโ€™s really going on here?โ€

Isolde smiled and said nothing, letting the mystery hang in the air.

Clark, still puzzled, turned to Oliver. โ€œDo you know what she means?โ€

Oliver chuckled. โ€œOf course I do. Sheโ€™s being perfectly clear.โ€

โ€œClearly?โ€ Clark frowned, looking between the two of them. โ€œSo, are we selling it or not?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not selling it to just anyone, but she could sell it to the Langley family,โ€ Oliver replied with a grin.

โ€œBut they canโ€™t afford it,โ€ Clark retorted.

โ€œThe Langley family isnโ€™t just those few people. Arenโ€™t you a part of the Langley family too?โ€ Oliver teased.

Clark was momentarily taken aback. โ€œMe? Sell it to me? I donโ€™t have 10 million.โ€

โ€œSell it to you for one thousand,โ€ Isolde said with a playful smirk. โ€œWhen they come, weโ€™ll say weโ€™re preparing to sell the mountain at the government office. Weโ€™ll get the paperwork sorted, and the deed will be transferred to your name.โ€

โ€œThat canโ€™t be right. One thousand canโ€™t buy a mountainโ€”itโ€™s practically giving it away. I canโ€™t accept that,โ€ Clark said, shaking his head.

โ€œItโ€™s a family matter. Donโ€™t worry about it,โ€ Isolde said, her voice light. โ€œYouโ€™re my motherโ€™s son, and when it comes to my fatherโ€™s funeral, youโ€™ve been helping out with the arrangements. You have a right to share in what they left behind. After all, you gave me the title of Marquiseโ€”if anyoneโ€™s getting a good deal here, itโ€™s me.โ€

Clark rolled his eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re making it sound like this was always yours.โ€

Oliver, watching them exchange polite refusals, chuckled. โ€œGeoffrey and Prunella would probably rest easy knowing you two get along so well.โ€

At that moment, Anthony entered, his footsteps echoing in the tent. โ€œIsolde, Riley wants to offer a prayer for Geoffrey, and Lawson and the others are waiting outside.โ€

Isolde, unfazed, replied, โ€œIโ€™m not stopping them. Iโ€™m angry with them, not my father. If they want to visit my father, let them come. But if they approach my fatherโ€™s coffin without a shred of shame or guilt, Anthony, make sure they know what I think of that.โ€

Anthony nodded, heading back outside. Moments later, his voice rang out, loud enough for everyone to hear: โ€œGeoffreyโ€™s body has been here for days, but they still wonโ€™t let him inside. A man who served the Eryndral Empire for years, and now he canโ€™t even enter the church, canโ€™t even rest in the family grave. How do you think the people will talk about you if this gets out? Youโ€™ll have to live with that shame.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t hurt him, but you can hurt his daughter. If you donโ€™t feel guilty standing before his coffin, then go ahead and enter.โ€

Oliver, who had overheard the exchange, looked at Anthony with surprise. โ€œAnthony, youโ€™re getting pretty good at this.โ€

Isolde grinned. โ€œHeโ€™s got a way with words. He knows how to handle these situations.โ€

Oliver laughed. โ€œIf they still have the nerve to come in after that, they must be completely shameless.โ€

Before anyone could say more, the flap of the tent opened. It wasnโ€™t the Langley family, but Riley.

Anthony followed him inside. โ€œLawsonโ€™s still outside. Heโ€™ll come in later.โ€

โ€œLet them wait,โ€ Isolde said coolly.

Clark looked confused. โ€œWhy?โ€

Isolde smirked. โ€œWho knows? Theyโ€™re just saving face. After Anthonyโ€™s words, they couldnโ€™t possibly come in without feeling utterly shameless.โ€

Riley, who had been arrogant and distant earlier, now entered the tent with a completely different attitude. He bowed slightly, his tone more respectful. โ€œGreetings, Oliver. Greetings, Isolde. Greetings, Clark.โ€

โ€œNot necessary,โ€ Isolde replied, her voice flat.

Riley quickly said, โ€œPlease forgive me. I was in the wrong yesterday. Iโ€™ll make sure to explain everything to the Langley family, please rest assured, Marquise.โ€

โ€œWhether you explain or not doesnโ€™t matter. A clear conscience needs no explanation. My father wonโ€™t be falsely accused of causing Prudenceโ€™s death just because of a few words from you,โ€ Isolde said coldly.

โ€œTruly, itโ€™s all a misunderstanding. I never said that. When Vance spoke about Geoffrey in front of the Langley family, I didnโ€™t speak up or defend him. Iโ€™ve been away handling other matters and honestly didnโ€™t know the full story. Iโ€™m not trying to defend myself, Iโ€™m just telling the truth. Please donโ€™t be upset,โ€ Riley said, his voice apologetic.

Isoldeโ€™s gaze turned to him, a faint smile on her lips. โ€œRiley, are you here to offer your prayer for my father?โ€

Riley sighed softly. โ€œIt seems youโ€™ve misunderstood me.โ€ He stepped forward, bowing three times before the coffin. โ€œGeoffrey, rest in peace.โ€

After his bows, he turned to Oliver and smiled faintly. โ€œI havenโ€™t had a chance to congratulate you both on your wedding yet. When you return to Argentum, Iโ€™ll be sure to send a proper gift.โ€

Oliverโ€™s response was icy. โ€œWe didnโ€™t invite you to our wedding, so donโ€™t bother with any gifts.โ€

Rileyโ€™s smile faltered, and he awkwardly laughed. โ€œOf course, of course. My apologies. I mustโ€™ve overstepped. I shouldnโ€™t have mentioned it.โ€

He glanced at Isolde, who turned her head to the side, avoiding his gaze. Oliverโ€™s face was completely cold.

Isolde, his eyes filled with desperation. โ€œMarquise, I was wrong. Please, forgive me this once.โ€ He looked up at her, his expression a picture of pleading.

Isolde, who had always been somewhat lenient with eunuchs, especially given Dougโ€™s background, had always shown some compassion. However, Rileyโ€™s actions were unforgivable. His involvement in forging the tombstone was enough to earn him a small punishment, but she had no intention of ruining him entirely, especially since he was a person close to Catherine. She preferred to avoid getting too entangled in palace matters.

Seeing him beg, Isolde raised an eyebrow. โ€œAlright, tell me, was Ashley the one who instructed you to do this?โ€

Riley, no longer daring to hide the truth, immediately confessed. โ€œYes, it was Ashley. She visits Catherine every day, morning and night, always so attentive, and won her favor. One day, I made a mistake in front of Catherine, and she scolded me. Ashley comforted me, saying Catherine was upset over certain matters, and advised me to be more cautious. She also gave me a way to atone for my actions.โ€

Rileyโ€™s voice trailed off, and he seemed visibly regretful, as if he regretted ever listening to Ashley.

Isolde, sensing there was more to the story, urged, โ€œContinue.โ€

Riley hesitated before speaking again, his voice quieter. โ€œAshley told me to act, and I did. She said it would help her cause, butโ€ฆ looking back, I realize now it was a mistake. I wish I hadnโ€™t done it.โ€
