The Swordswomanโs Revenge Story after Rebirth: Chapter 437 Somethingโs Happened
Esme, a woman of action, went to the palace to find Rowena while Isolde rested. By evening, Isolde awoke to find dinner long past and the household scattered. Pablo and Allan rarely dined together; William was seldom present; and Margaret usually ate alone.
โHave you eaten?โ Oliver asked upon entering, shrugging off his cloak and rubbing his hands. The chill lingered, so he forwent brushing Isoldeโs cheek.
โI havenโt eaten; I was waiting for you,โ Isolde said, stretching. Her peaceful nap had left her refreshed and energized.
โI had some soup with Doug at Southern Watch, but Iโm still hungry,โ Oliver said, calling out, โNoelle, are the dishes ready?โ
Noelle answered from outside, โThe food is ready; Iโll bring it in now.โ
โGood,โ Oliver said, pulling Isolde to the vanity. Her eyes were a little swollen from sleep, but her grown-out eyebrows, now dark and thick, added to her striking, heroic appearance. He brushed her hair, expertly pinning it up. Isolde smiled, โYouโre getting quite good at this.โ
โI learn fast,โ he replied casually.
Isolde took his hand, their eyes meeting. โYour hands were made for fighting, but here you are, doing my hair. Doesnโt that seem like a waste?โ
โThereโs no better use for them than making you beautiful,โ Oliver murmured, gently working through her hair.
Isolde tilted her head, smirking. โBut what if there are no wars left? What if generals are useless in a peaceful empire? Wouldnโt that make you useless?โ
โIโd rather be useless than see war,โ Oliver said seriously. โAnd you donโt feel the same?โ
Isoldeโs voice softened. โI share your thoughts. If the Eryndral Empire can have peace, then my life wouldnโt matter. Peace is more precious than anything else.โ
They both knew the weight of those words. Peace, after all, is something only those who have fought for it truly understand. The empire appeared calm, with large nations at peace, but Geoffrey had always sensed something amiss.
โIs something wrong?โ Isolde asked, sensing a shift in Oliver.
Oliver looked at her, his expression serious. โDoug reported a raid yesterday in the border town of Fragoland. Mountain bandits attacked, killing over a hundred villagers and ransacking the place.โ
โFragolandโs border town? That borders Thalvinar,โ Isolde said, surprised. โHow could such a large groupโฆโ
โI suspect theyโre not bandits,โ Oliver replied.
โYou think theyโre Thalvinar soldiers pretending to be bandits?โ Isolde asked.
โItโs possible,โ Oliver said, analyzing. โThe border town has been under Harrisonโs commandโthough heโs back in Argentum, the majority of the forces are still stationed there. A bandit group wouldnโt dare act so boldly. Itโs not a large town, and sending an army to wipe them out wouldnโt be difficult. Plus, if there are troops stationed there, the bandits would have to know better. Which bandit leader would risk such an operation?โ
Isolde nodded, understanding his reasoning. โHas Doug said anything more?โ
โDoug and I think alike, but many in court think this was just an isolated incident. They refuse to jump to conclusions and accuse Thalvinar of aggression, and some even blame Harrisonโs troops for being ineffective.โ
โThereโs always someone who stands by and complains,โ Isolde muttered angrily.
Noelle and Britney entered with the meal. โThe foodโs ready; itโs getting cold.โ
โHave you eaten?โ Isolde asked, standing.
โWeโve eaten,โ Noelle smiled. โEsme hasnโt returned yet; she went to the palace.โ
โAh, I see,โ Isolde said, turning to Oliver. โEsme went to the palace for what?โ
โI asked her to inquire about Pennyโs situation,โ Isolde replied, wiping her face with a warm cloth.
โStill not giving up?โ Oliver chuckled.
โI just want to know more. Pennyโs been through so much. If sheโs willing, I want to bring her back to Argentum,โ Isolde explained.
Oliver, as always, supported her. โThatโs a good idea. The more people you have close to you, the better.โ
โEat up,โ Isolde said. โAllan should be back soon. After we finish, letโs go and pay him a visit.โ
โAlright,โ Oliver said, stirring the soup. โDuck soup, just what you need for some extra warmth.โ
Noelle smiled, serving the soup. โEsme insisted on this. She said you must finish it.โ
โIt smells delicious,โ Isolde said, eagerly ready to eat. โBy the way, have Hattie and Hazel returned?โ
โNot yet,โ Noelle replied.
โIf they come back, have them come see me,โ Isolde said as she sipped the soup.
โWill do,โ Noelle answered.
Once they finished eating, they asked Britney to check if Allan and Pablo had returned. She came back and reported, โTheyโve returned. Pablo is in Allanโs room, having a late-night snack.โ
โGood. Letโs go,โ Oliver said, exchanging a look with Isolde.
Though Isolde had only recently married, she had learned some of Allanโs habits. He was very health-conscious and never ate late-night snacks, so if Pablo was with him, something must have been discussed.
When they arrived at Allanโs room, Heidiโs maid was just stepping out to warm the wine. Upon seeing them, she bowed politely.
โIs Allan still up?โ Isolde asked.
โHe and Pablo are having a drink. Iโm about to go warm the wine,โ she replied.
โAlright, go ahead,โ Isolde said, dismissing her.
They entered the room, where a fire burned brightly. Allan and Pablo were sitting on a divan, a small table between them, drinking together, while Heidi embroidered by the light.
When they saw Isolde and Oliver, Heidi set down her needlework and stood, smiling. โI thought youโd come, please, sit down.โ
โHeidi,โ they greeted her, then quickly walked over, both saying, โGrandfather, Father,โ in unison.
Pablo looked up and smiled, โYouโre here.โ
Allan looked at them, motioning to the chairs. โCome, sit. Have a drink with us.โ
โYes,โ Oliver responded, pulling out a chair. He and Isolde sat on either side of the table. There was already a pot of wine on the table, and it seemed Allan and Pablo had been drinking for a while. Heidi brought two glasses and placed them in front of them. She reached for the wine, but Isolde stopped her, softly saying, โIโll pour.โ
She filled Allanโs glass first, then Pabloโs, before pouring one for Oliver and finally herself. Three small dishes for the wine sat on the table, untouched.
