The Swordswomanโ€™s Revenge Story after Rebirth: Chapter 437 Somethingโ€™s Happened

Esme, a woman of action, went to the palace to find Rowena while Isolde rested. By evening, Isolde awoke to find dinner long past and the household scattered. Pablo and Allan rarely dined together; William was seldom present; and Margaret usually ate alone.

โ€œHave you eaten?โ€ Oliver asked upon entering, shrugging off his cloak and rubbing his hands. The chill lingered, so he forwent brushing Isoldeโ€™s cheek.

โ€œI havenโ€™t eaten; I was waiting for you,โ€ Isolde said, stretching. Her peaceful nap had left her refreshed and energized.

โ€œI had some soup with Doug at Southern Watch, but Iโ€™m still hungry,โ€ Oliver said, calling out, โ€œNoelle, are the dishes ready?โ€

Noelle answered from outside, โ€œThe food is ready; Iโ€™ll bring it in now.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Oliver said, pulling Isolde to the vanity. Her eyes were a little swollen from sleep, but her grown-out eyebrows, now dark and thick, added to her striking, heroic appearance. He brushed her hair, expertly pinning it up. Isolde smiled, โ€œYouโ€™re getting quite good at this.โ€

โ€œI learn fast,โ€ he replied casually.

Isolde took his hand, their eyes meeting. โ€œYour hands were made for fighting, but here you are, doing my hair. Doesnโ€™t that seem like a waste?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no better use for them than making you beautiful,โ€ Oliver murmured, gently working through her hair.

Isolde tilted her head, smirking. โ€œBut what if there are no wars left? What if generals are useless in a peaceful empire? Wouldnโ€™t that make you useless?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d rather be useless than see war,โ€ Oliver said seriously. โ€œAnd you donโ€™t feel the same?โ€

Isoldeโ€™s voice softened. โ€œI share your thoughts. If the Eryndral Empire can have peace, then my life wouldnโ€™t matter. Peace is more precious than anything else.โ€

They both knew the weight of those words. Peace, after all, is something only those who have fought for it truly understand. The empire appeared calm, with large nations at peace, but Geoffrey had always sensed something amiss.

โ€œIs something wrong?โ€ Isolde asked, sensing a shift in Oliver.

Oliver looked at her, his expression serious. โ€œDoug reported a raid yesterday in the border town of Fragoland. Mountain bandits attacked, killing over a hundred villagers and ransacking the place.โ€

โ€œFragolandโ€™s border town? That borders Thalvinar,โ€ Isolde said, surprised. โ€œHow could such a large groupโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI suspect theyโ€™re not bandits,โ€ Oliver replied.

โ€œYou think theyโ€™re Thalvinar soldiers pretending to be bandits?โ€ Isolde asked.

โ€œItโ€™s possible,โ€ Oliver said, analyzing. โ€œThe border town has been under Harrisonโ€™s commandโ€”though heโ€™s back in Argentum, the majority of the forces are still stationed there. A bandit group wouldnโ€™t dare act so boldly. Itโ€™s not a large town, and sending an army to wipe them out wouldnโ€™t be difficult. Plus, if there are troops stationed there, the bandits would have to know better. Which bandit leader would risk such an operation?โ€

Isolde nodded, understanding his reasoning. โ€œHas Doug said anything more?โ€

โ€œDoug and I think alike, but many in court think this was just an isolated incident. They refuse to jump to conclusions and accuse Thalvinar of aggression, and some even blame Harrisonโ€™s troops for being ineffective.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s always someone who stands by and complains,โ€ Isolde muttered angrily.

Noelle and Britney entered with the meal. โ€œThe foodโ€™s ready; itโ€™s getting cold.โ€

โ€œHave you eaten?โ€ Isolde asked, standing.

โ€œWeโ€™ve eaten,โ€ Noelle smiled. โ€œEsme hasnโ€™t returned yet; she went to the palace.โ€

โ€œAh, I see,โ€ Isolde said, turning to Oliver. โ€œEsme went to the palace for what?โ€

โ€œI asked her to inquire about Pennyโ€™s situation,โ€ Isolde replied, wiping her face with a warm cloth.

โ€œStill not giving up?โ€ Oliver chuckled.

โ€œI just want to know more. Pennyโ€™s been through so much. If sheโ€™s willing, I want to bring her back to Argentum,โ€ Isolde explained.

Oliver, as always, supported her. โ€œThatโ€™s a good idea. The more people you have close to you, the better.โ€

โ€œEat up,โ€ Isolde said. โ€œAllan should be back soon. After we finish, letโ€™s go and pay him a visit.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ Oliver said, stirring the soup. โ€œDuck soup, just what you need for some extra warmth.โ€

Noelle smiled, serving the soup. โ€œEsme insisted on this. She said you must finish it.โ€

โ€œIt smells delicious,โ€ Isolde said, eagerly ready to eat. โ€œBy the way, have Hattie and Hazel returned?โ€

โ€œNot yet,โ€ Noelle replied.

โ€œIf they come back, have them come see me,โ€ Isolde said as she sipped the soup.

โ€œWill do,โ€ Noelle answered.

Once they finished eating, they asked Britney to check if Allan and Pablo had returned. She came back and reported, โ€œTheyโ€™ve returned. Pablo is in Allanโ€™s room, having a late-night snack.โ€

โ€œGood. Letโ€™s go,โ€ Oliver said, exchanging a look with Isolde.

Though Isolde had only recently married, she had learned some of Allanโ€™s habits. He was very health-conscious and never ate late-night snacks, so if Pablo was with him, something must have been discussed.

When they arrived at Allanโ€™s room, Heidiโ€™s maid was just stepping out to warm the wine. Upon seeing them, she bowed politely.

โ€œIs Allan still up?โ€ Isolde asked.

โ€œHe and Pablo are having a drink. Iโ€™m about to go warm the wine,โ€ she replied.

โ€œAlright, go ahead,โ€ Isolde said, dismissing her.

They entered the room, where a fire burned brightly. Allan and Pablo were sitting on a divan, a small table between them, drinking together, while Heidi embroidered by the light.

When they saw Isolde and Oliver, Heidi set down her needlework and stood, smiling. โ€œI thought youโ€™d come, please, sit down.โ€

โ€œHeidi,โ€ they greeted her, then quickly walked over, both saying, โ€œGrandfather, Father,โ€ in unison.

Pablo looked up and smiled, โ€œYouโ€™re here.โ€

Allan looked at them, motioning to the chairs. โ€œCome, sit. Have a drink with us.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Oliver responded, pulling out a chair. He and Isolde sat on either side of the table. There was already a pot of wine on the table, and it seemed Allan and Pablo had been drinking for a while. Heidi brought two glasses and placed them in front of them. She reached for the wine, but Isolde stopped her, softly saying, โ€œIโ€™ll pour.โ€

She filled Allanโ€™s glass first, then Pabloโ€™s, before pouring one for Oliver and finally herself. Three small dishes for the wine sat on the table, untouched.
