Chapter 449: Why the Urgency?

Marthaโ€™s wedding preparations were surprisingly simple. Since the wedding couldnโ€™t be extravagant, many of the usual formalities were skipped. The housekeeper, Ryker, and a group of servants quickly arranged everything. However, one problem remained unsolvedโ€”the dowry.

Vance was destitute, and it was expected that Clark would provide it. But Clark had no savings and couldnโ€™t afford anything substantial. Vance, of course, was in no position to help; he had been hiding in Zrork City and had nothing to offer even if found.

Nicole had a little money of her own, but she wasnโ€™t yet married and needed it for her dowry. Emptying her entire savings wouldnโ€™t be wise, especially since it wasnโ€™t much to begin with.

This left Martha anxious, prompting her to drag the housekeeper to Isolde for help. Her attitude toward Isolde had softened, clearly driven by her need. The wedding had already been pared down to essentials, but Martha still needed a dowry. So, she went to the Pearl Tower, smiling sweetly as she grabbed Isoldeโ€™s hand.

โ€œIsolde, my sister is getting married, but I have no money for a dowry. If you have extra funds, perhaps you could give me 10 million? Iโ€™ll remember this favor.โ€

Isolde pulled her hand away and replied coolly, โ€œThe Valen family will provide you with the money. Use that for your dowry.โ€

Ryker, standing nearby, couldnโ€™t hide his irritation. Ten million? Was she really expecting that much money so casually?

Marthaโ€™s face darkened. โ€œThereโ€™s no way the money from the groomโ€™s family can cover the dowry. Besides, I donโ€™t even know if the money will actually end up in my hands.โ€

Isolde raised an eyebrow. โ€œIf it doesnโ€™t end up in your hands, whose hands will it go to?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s for my father,โ€ Martha mumbled.

Isolde smirked. โ€œI doubt youโ€™ll give it to him.โ€

โ€œI really donโ€™t want to, but what can I do? Heโ€™s my father.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who can decide,โ€ Isolde said confidently.

Marthaโ€™s face twisted with anger, realizing Isolde wasnโ€™t willing to part with any money. โ€œWeโ€™re sisters, and youโ€™re being so heartless? Itโ€™s just money. Iโ€™ll pay you back later, but if I get married without a dowry, itโ€™s not just a disgrace to me, itโ€™s a disgrace to you too. After all, youโ€™re the County Princess. I donโ€™t want to embarrass you.โ€

Isolde smiled lightly. โ€œI donโ€™t mind. Iโ€™ve never heard of a younger sister giving a dowry to her older sister. But Clark should be able to afford to give you money for your dowry. Donโ€™t ask for too much. He doesnโ€™t even have enough money for his own wedding.โ€

Martha gritted her teeth. โ€œWeโ€™re a special family, and special families deserve special treatment. You have money to buy your dowry, but I will give you the money you need for the wedding expenses. Beyond that, thereโ€™s nothing more.โ€

Turning to Ryker, she added, โ€œIโ€™ll have someone deliver 3 million to you. Use it for household expenses and the wedding. Spend whatโ€™s necessary, but save on anything unnecessary.โ€

Ryker nodded quickly. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

He was relieved Isolde hadnโ€™t agreed to give Martha any money for the dowry. That would have hurt Isoldeโ€™s reputation. People might think she was taking control of her family affairs, which she definitely didnโ€™t want.

Martha was clearly frustrated by the 3 million and the restrictions. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen someone so stingy. Giving me a little money is like youโ€™re cutting off your own flesh. Donโ€™t get too smug, Isolde. Youโ€™ll need someoneโ€™s help one day, and I swear, when that time comes, donโ€™t come asking me.โ€

With that, she stormed off.

Ryker awkwardly turned to Isolde. โ€œPlease donโ€™t take it personally. Sheโ€™s just like that.โ€

Isolde smiled. โ€œIโ€™m not upset. Let her be. You just consider this a learning experience. When Clark and Nicole get married, youโ€™ll be well-prepared.โ€

Ryker nodded, knowing Clarkโ€™s marriage was fast approaching, and his priority now was to serve him well, as Clark would be his future employer.

After Ryker left, Isolde anxiously awaited Keithโ€™s response. He had gone to ask his parents, and no matter the answer, he would definitely let her know. Her worry was that if his parents didnโ€™t agree, Nicole might not be able to accept it.

With so many things happening, now was not the time to stir up any more trouble, but Nicoleโ€™s marriage was urgent. If she wasnโ€™t married within a hundred days, sheโ€™d have to wait another year or two. It would be hard for Nicole to bear that, and the wait would be agonizing.

As evening approached and there was still no news, Isoldeโ€™s heart sank. She waited for Keith to come back and let her know. If he had an answer, it would be quick, but as the day went on with no word, she couldnโ€™t help but worry. She suspected that Keithโ€™s parents had refused, and he didnโ€™t know how to break the news, so he simply avoided coming.

Nicole was equally anxious, waiting for Keith to arrive. The maids had run to check several times, but there was no sign of him.

Isolde, realizing waiting wasnโ€™t helping, decided to go search for him. She silently regretted bringing it up in the first place, since if she hadnโ€™t, her older sister wouldnโ€™t have gotten her hopes up. She knew Nicoleโ€™s impulsive nature, and the thought of her possibly doing something rash made Isolde nervous.

As Isolde walked out of the Pearl Tower, a servant rushed toward her and said, โ€œIsolde, someoneโ€™s here to propose to Nicole. The housekeeper is handling it, and he sent me to ask if you want to bring Clark back.โ€

Isolde grabbed the servantโ€™s arm. โ€œIs it Keithโ€™s parents?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ the servant replied, โ€œand tell him to come back right away. Thereโ€™s something important at home.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ the servant said, running off.

Isolde hurriedly adjusted her attire and hair. Esme laughed. โ€œWhatโ€™s all the fuss? Itโ€™s not like youโ€™re the one proposing.โ€

Isolde smiled. โ€œI canโ€™t help it. Itโ€™s the first time meeting the in-laws. I have to make a good impression.โ€

Esme chuckled. โ€œStop acting like this is the wedding. You havenโ€™t even finished preparing the bride! Go on, donโ€™t keep them waiting. Nicoleโ€™s future depends on you.โ€

As Isolde headed out, she mused aloud, โ€œI wonder why theyโ€™re suddenly proposing. This could have waited a few days.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Letโ€™s go find out,โ€ Esme said.
