Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?
Oliver asked, โWhatโs going on? Whatโs on Deer Mountain?โ
Isolde pushed aside the map. โI tested Heidiโs reaction tonight. When I mentioned Deer Mountain, she seemed tense. I suspect the spiesโ base is there. But according to you, the valley is covered in ash, which makes my theory nearly impossible.โ
โCould she be deliberately misleading you?โ Oliver said.
โNo. She isnโt wary of me yet.โ
Oliver studied her sketch, pointing to a path on the right. โYouโve never been there. How did you know about this route?โ
Isolde pulled out another map and spread it before him. โDeer Mountain borders Woodcutter Mountain. This map details Woodcutter Mountainโs terrain. Thereโs a lake between the two, and the path here skirts the shore. The area has no steep cliffs or elevation changes, so I assumed a trail must lead to Deer Mountain. But I didnโt expect the valley to be barrenโฆโ
โNo, no,โ Oliver interrupted. โThe upper half of Deer Mountain is ash-covered and lifeless, too exposed for concealment. But the junction with Woodcutter Mountain has a depression, perfect for hiding. The lake nearby ensures sustainability. Most importantly, the valleyโs unsuitability for hunting means villagers avoid it. Theyโd only circle Woodcutter Mountainโs lake. Whoโd expect people in Deer Mountain?โ
His expression darkened. โIf true, Isolde, you may have alerted them.โ
Isolde smiled faintly. โNo, Iโm luring them out. Whether theyโre in Deer Mountain or Woodcutter Mountain, their hideout is well-hidden. Searching with even a large force would be futile. But if they panic and relocate, we only need to stake out key exits. Weโll catch them.โ
Oliverโs eyes gleamed with admiration. โIsolde, youโre a treasure. How does your mind work so fast?โ
โBig head, big brain!โ She stuck out her tongue, mocking herself.
โYour headโs just right. Perfect face, perfect everything.โ His gaze trailed downward, igniting a spark in his eyes.
Isolde coughed, glancing away. People are watching. Noelle and Britney stifled giggles.
Oliver cleared his throat. โWell. Back to business. Iโll assign men to surveil the area.โ
Isolde nodded. โIโll visit Arthur tomorrow.โ
โAbout Heidi?โ
โAgnes didnโt tell me everything, and she doesnโt know Heidiโs motives. But Arthur does.โ
โEven if he knows, he wonโt talk,โ Oliver said.
Isolde smirked. โCarrot and stick. Iโll pry his mouth open.โ
โGood. Weโll split up.โ

Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?
โSleep!โ
And so it was decided.
The Valen family was in chaos over Williamโs wedding. Though not a grand affair, as the heir, his wedding drew attention. Margaret, unwilling to compromise on propriety, arranged for the most exclusive banquetโhiring Argentumโs most renowned and expensive restaurant chefs to cater the event.
Thus, no one noticed Isoldeโs daily comings and goings.
She left early, first inspecting her shops, then heading to Everfort Granary. Everfort Granary primarily specialized in grain trade, but its reputation soared after the Zloimond campaign, achieving meteoric growth.
โYouโre not just here to visit, are you?โ Collin joined her for coffee during a break.
Isolde smiled. โCanโt I drop by?โ
โWith your schedule? Unlikely.โ
She laughed. โTrue. Got any free hands? Send someone to Baron Feltonโs estate with food and a message. Tell him to meet me here at dusk.โ
โWhy not simply visit his estate if you wish to see him?โ Collin asked.
โHeโs being watched. Instruct him to come alone, without telling anyone. Just say heโs out for a stroll.โ
โUnderstood. Iโll have someone deliver it!โ Collin didnโt press further. With Everfort Granaryโs constant stream of visitors, Arthur Langley settling accounts at the grain shop raised no suspicions.
Collin took two steps before suddenly stopping and turning to Isolde. โHas Penny returned to Argentum?โ
Isolde shook her head. โNo, why do you ask?โ
Collin smiled faintly. โThen I must have been mistaken.โ
โMistaken? What do you mean?โ Isolde pressed.
โYesterday at the docks while arranging shipments with the canal guild,โ Collin explained, โI spotted someone who looked just like her from afar. But after concluding my business, sheโd disappeared. The boatmen said sheโd arrived from Windermount.โ
Isolde stiffened. โFrom Windermount? And the resemblance was strong?โ
โYes.โ
Though Isolde had considered inviting Penny back to Argentum, Esmeโs remarks about her potential reluctance had made her postpone the matter until after the current busy period, planning instead to visit Windermount later to gauge her interest.
โCould she truly have returned?โ Isolde murmured.
Collin hesitated. โLikely just a case of mistaken identity. Had she returned, sheโd surely have sought you out. Since she hasnโt, I must have been wrong.โ

Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?
Isolde nodded. Penny would certainly have contacted her if sheโd come back.
Rising abruptly, she said, โIโll take my leave now and return this evening.โ
โVery well. Safe travels.โ
Outside Everfort Granary, Hazel inquired, โItโs nearly lunchtime. Shall we return to the estate?โ
Isolde waved dismissively. โThe household is in complete chaos. Weโll dine out today.โ
Hazel brightened. โExcellent! Thereโs a new Cafรฉ opened by southerners in Argentum renowned for its exquisite dim sum. Shall we try it?โ
โOkay!โ
Seated by the Cafรฉ window, Isolde addressed Hazel and Hattie. โRegarding your investigation into Heidiโs children, have you made progress?โ
โSome leads remain,โ Hazel replied. โWeโve requested the magistracy to verify certain details before presenting our full findings.โ
โGive me the preliminary report,โ Isolde said.
โHeidi originated from Torstel,โ Hazel began. โBefore marrying Allah, she was widowed for a decade, raising two children alone. Her son operates an art dealership in Argentum, while her daughter married Mr. Robinson, the garrison of Bumblewick.โ
โWhat specifically requires verification?โ Isolde questioned.
Hattie interjected, โWhen tailing them, we noticed their accents didnโt match Torstel dialects. Suspecting fabricated identities, weโve engaged trusted magistrates to examine household registries.โ
โAnd her late husbandโs occupation?โ
โA modest merchant, comfortable but not wealthy. Heidi sustained herself through widowhood on their savings.โ
Isolde nodded thoughtfully. โSuperficially, nothing appears suspicious.โ
