Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?

Oliver asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Whatโ€™s on Deer Mountain?โ€

Isolde pushed aside the map. โ€œI tested Heidiโ€™s reaction tonight. When I mentioned Deer Mountain, she seemed tense. I suspect the spiesโ€™ base is there. But according to you, the valley is covered in ash, which makes my theory nearly impossible.โ€

โ€œCould she be deliberately misleading you?โ€ Oliver said.

โ€œNo. She isnโ€™t wary of me yet.โ€

Oliver studied her sketch, pointing to a path on the right. โ€œYouโ€™ve never been there. How did you know about this route?โ€

Isolde pulled out another map and spread it before him. โ€œDeer Mountain borders Woodcutter Mountain. This map details Woodcutter Mountainโ€™s terrain. Thereโ€™s a lake between the two, and the path here skirts the shore. The area has no steep cliffs or elevation changes, so I assumed a trail must lead to Deer Mountain. But I didnโ€™t expect the valley to be barrenโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, no,โ€ Oliver interrupted. โ€œThe upper half of Deer Mountain is ash-covered and lifeless, too exposed for concealment. But the junction with Woodcutter Mountain has a depression, perfect for hiding. The lake nearby ensures sustainability. Most importantly, the valleyโ€™s unsuitability for hunting means villagers avoid it. Theyโ€™d only circle Woodcutter Mountainโ€™s lake. Whoโ€™d expect people in Deer Mountain?โ€

His expression darkened. โ€œIf true, Isolde, you may have alerted them.โ€

Isolde smiled faintly. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m luring them out. Whether theyโ€™re in Deer Mountain or Woodcutter Mountain, their hideout is well-hidden. Searching with even a large force would be futile. But if they panic and relocate, we only need to stake out key exits. Weโ€™ll catch them.โ€

Oliverโ€™s eyes gleamed with admiration. โ€œIsolde, youโ€™re a treasure. How does your mind work so fast?โ€

โ€œBig head, big brain!โ€ She stuck out her tongue, mocking herself.

โ€œYour headโ€™s just right. Perfect face, perfect everything.โ€ His gaze trailed downward, igniting a spark in his eyes.

Isolde coughed, glancing away. People are watching. Noelle and Britney stifled giggles.

Oliver cleared his throat. โ€œWell. Back to business. Iโ€™ll assign men to surveil the area.โ€

Isolde nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll visit Arthur tomorrow.โ€

โ€œAbout Heidi?โ€

โ€œAgnes didnโ€™t tell me everything, and she doesnโ€™t know Heidiโ€™s motives. But Arthur does.โ€

โ€œEven if he knows, he wonโ€™t talk,โ€ Oliver said.

Isolde smirked. โ€œCarrot and stick. Iโ€™ll pry his mouth open.โ€

โ€œGood. Weโ€™ll split up.โ€

Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?

โ€œSleep!โ€

And so it was decided.

The Valen family was in chaos over Williamโ€™s wedding. Though not a grand affair, as the heir, his wedding drew attention. Margaret, unwilling to compromise on propriety, arranged for the most exclusive banquetโ€”hiring Argentumโ€™s most renowned and expensive restaurant chefs to cater the event.

Thus, no one noticed Isoldeโ€™s daily comings and goings.

She left early, first inspecting her shops, then heading to Everfort Granary. Everfort Granary primarily specialized in grain trade, but its reputation soared after the Zloimond campaign, achieving meteoric growth.

โ€œYouโ€™re not just here to visit, are you?โ€ Collin joined her for coffee during a break.

Isolde smiled. โ€œCanโ€™t I drop by?โ€

โ€œWith your schedule? Unlikely.โ€

She laughed. โ€œTrue. Got any free hands? Send someone to Baron Feltonโ€™s estate with food and a message. Tell him to meet me here at dusk.โ€

โ€œWhy not simply visit his estate if you wish to see him?โ€ Collin asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s being watched. Instruct him to come alone, without telling anyone. Just say heโ€™s out for a stroll.โ€

โ€œUnderstood. Iโ€™ll have someone deliver it!โ€ Collin didnโ€™t press further. With Everfort Granaryโ€™s constant stream of visitors, Arthur Langley settling accounts at the grain shop raised no suspicions.

Collin took two steps before suddenly stopping and turning to Isolde. โ€œHas Penny returned to Argentum?โ€

Isolde shook her head. โ€œNo, why do you ask?โ€

Collin smiled faintly. โ€œThen I must have been mistaken.โ€

โ€œMistaken? What do you mean?โ€ Isolde pressed.

โ€œYesterday at the docks while arranging shipments with the canal guild,โ€ Collin explained, โ€œI spotted someone who looked just like her from afar. But after concluding my business, sheโ€™d disappeared. The boatmen said sheโ€™d arrived from Windermount.โ€

Isolde stiffened. โ€œFrom Windermount? And the resemblance was strong?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

Though Isolde had considered inviting Penny back to Argentum, Esmeโ€™s remarks about her potential reluctance had made her postpone the matter until after the current busy period, planning instead to visit Windermount later to gauge her interest.

โ€œCould she truly have returned?โ€ Isolde murmured.

Collin hesitated. โ€œLikely just a case of mistaken identity. Had she returned, sheโ€™d surely have sought you out. Since she hasnโ€™t, I must have been wrong.โ€

Chapter 452: A Glimpse of Penny?

Isolde nodded. Penny would certainly have contacted her if sheโ€™d come back.

Rising abruptly, she said, โ€œIโ€™ll take my leave now and return this evening.โ€

โ€œVery well. Safe travels.โ€

Outside Everfort Granary, Hazel inquired, โ€œItโ€™s nearly lunchtime. Shall we return to the estate?โ€

Isolde waved dismissively. โ€œThe household is in complete chaos. Weโ€™ll dine out today.โ€

Hazel brightened. โ€œExcellent! Thereโ€™s a new Cafรฉ opened by southerners in Argentum renowned for its exquisite dim sum. Shall we try it?โ€

โ€œOkay!โ€

Seated by the Cafรฉ window, Isolde addressed Hazel and Hattie. โ€œRegarding your investigation into Heidiโ€™s children, have you made progress?โ€

โ€œSome leads remain,โ€ Hazel replied. โ€œWeโ€™ve requested the magistracy to verify certain details before presenting our full findings.โ€

โ€œGive me the preliminary report,โ€ Isolde said.

โ€œHeidi originated from Torstel,โ€ Hazel began. โ€œBefore marrying Allah, she was widowed for a decade, raising two children alone. Her son operates an art dealership in Argentum, while her daughter married Mr. Robinson, the garrison of Bumblewick.โ€

โ€œWhat specifically requires verification?โ€ Isolde questioned.

Hattie interjected, โ€œWhen tailing them, we noticed their accents didnโ€™t match Torstel dialects. Suspecting fabricated identities, weโ€™ve engaged trusted magistrates to examine household registries.โ€

โ€œAnd her late husbandโ€™s occupation?โ€

โ€œA modest merchant, comfortable but not wealthy. Heidi sustained herself through widowhood on their savings.โ€

Isolde nodded thoughtfully. โ€œSuperficially, nothing appears suspicious.โ€
