Chapter 6: Poisoned

As Isolde entered the hall, her fatherโ€™s furious voice erupted, countered by Matildaโ€™s stammering defense. A cold smile played on Isoldeโ€™s lips. Her father's prestige had peaked when he was granted the title of Duke, but after her mother's death, he had never recovered. He'd abandoned military leadership for a bureaucratic post, allowing the family's reputation to crumble. Secretly, he hoped to win favor with Milton Blackwell, Eleanor's fatherโ€”a secret he guarded closely. Revealing two truthsโ€”Eleanor's pregnancy with William's child and her father's pursuit of Milton's allianceโ€”would plunge the Velvet Wing into chaos tonight. By tomorrow, she was certain, the Pearl Tower's meals would be restored.

As expected, the next morning, Helena arrived with a bright smile. โ€œMiss, breakfast is ready!โ€ Mary had personally overseen the meal. Once the servants departed, Mary spoke coldly. โ€œMiss, youโ€™ve grown boldโ€”complaining to the Duke! But remember, Duke Langley has more pressing matters. Household affairs are managed by the Duchess.โ€ Mary had intended to report Isolde's earlier strike to Matilda, only to find Isolde had already done so. Furious and resentful, she muttered, โ€œFine. If you want food, go ahead. Eat yourself to death.โ€

Isolde picked up her fork, pausing at Mary's words. Waving Mary over, she said, โ€œCome here.โ€ Mary hesitated, eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat now? Do you intend to strike me again, my lady?โ€ โ€œI wonโ€™t hit you,โ€ Isolde said calmly, placing some meat in a smaller bowl. โ€œTake this to Leonis. Later, weโ€™ll discuss Eleanor.โ€ Thinking she held the advantage, Mary smirked and took the bowl. โ€œNow, this is better, Miss. Anything can be discussed. If Eleanor can't be the lady of the house, she can at least be a concubine.โ€ โ€œIndeed, youโ€™re absolutely right,โ€ Isolde replied with a faint smile. Mary, satisfied, left.

Isolde immediately turned to Helena. โ€œShut the door!โ€ Helena obeyed, smiling. โ€œMiss, youโ€™re so clever. Otherwise, we wouldnโ€™t have eaten.โ€ Isolde lacked an appetite. โ€œYou eat. Iโ€™m not hungry.โ€ Helena hesitated. โ€œNo, itโ€™s fine. Iโ€™ll eat later.โ€ โ€œYou didnโ€™t eat last night. Eat now!โ€ Isolde insisted, rising. A loud banging echoed from the door, followed by Mary's shrill voice. โ€œMiss Langley, open the door!โ€ Isolde ignored her, gesturing for Helena to eat. Only after Helena finished did she unlock the door.

Mary stormed in, eyes blazing. โ€œWhat is the meaning of this?โ€ โ€œMeaning?โ€ Isolde leaned back, unfazed. โ€œCanโ€™t I enjoy breakfast in peace? Or do the servants dictate the rules now?โ€ Maryโ€™s expression darkened, her gaze lingering on the half-eaten food. A sly smile crept across her face. Isoldeโ€™s eyes followed hers to the food. Suddenly, Helena clutched her stomach, crying out. Her face turned pale. โ€œHelena! Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Isolde rushed to her side. โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t knowโ€ฆโ€ Helena whispered, clutching Isolde's arm, her face contorted with pain. โ€œMissโ€ฆ my stomachโ€ฆ it hurts so muchโ€ฆโ€ Frantic barks erupted from outside.

Isolde went to the courtyard, finding Leonis writhing and howling. She froze, recalling Mary's earlier expression. Turning back to the table, the realization struck her: the food was poisoned. This had never happened in her previous life. Why? She had been meek and obedient then; such measures weren't necessary.

Mary smirked, feigning concern. โ€œWhy are you looking at me like that, my lady? Perhaps the girl ate something she shouldn't have.โ€ โ€œWhat poison was in the food?โ€ Isolde demanded. Mary protested, โ€œMiss Langley, please donโ€™t speak such slander! Poisoning the master is a crime punishable by death. I would never! Iโ€™ve served this household loyally for years!โ€ Isoldeโ€™s glare was intense, but her lips curled into an icy smile. โ€œLoyalty, is it? Such dedication deserves a reward.โ€ She grabbed Maryโ€™s hair, slapped her, and shoved her face toward the table. โ€œHere, have some of this leftover food. A reward fit for someone as faithful as you.โ€

Mary shrieked, โ€œHelp! Miss Langley is trying to kill me!โ€ Imogen, the maid, rushed in. Isolde glared at Imogen. โ€œFetch a doctor. Now!โ€ Imogen hesitated, but Isoldeโ€™s menacing tone stopped her. โ€œIf the doctor isnโ€™t here within half an hour, Maryโ€™s fate will be yours. Do not test me.โ€ Isolde smashed a plate over Maryโ€™s head. Mary slumped to the floor. Imogen, pale and trembling, fled.

Isolde's fury burned. I am the heiress of this house, yet a servant dares to poison me? If I let this pass, it will happen again. She dragged Mary outside, tying her to a stone pillar. โ€œMiss Langley, I was sent by Lady Matilda!โ€ Mary cried. โ€œIf you treat me like this, she wonโ€™t forgive you!โ€ Isoldeโ€™s expression hardened. She removed a shoe and beat Mary until her cries became whimpers. Tossing the shoe onto Maryโ€™s face, Isolde sneered, โ€œIโ€™ll deal with you properly later.โ€

Inside, Helena writhed in pain. โ€œMissโ€ฆ I canโ€™tโ€ฆ I canโ€™t serve you anymoreโ€ฆโ€ she gasped. โ€œDonโ€™t speak,โ€ Isolde said firmly, pressing Helenaโ€™s pressure points. โ€œYouโ€™ll be fine. They wouldnโ€™t dare kill me outright. This is just a warning.โ€ Helena clung to her hand. โ€œMissโ€ฆ donโ€™t report this to the Duke. If you complain too oftenโ€ฆ heโ€™ll grow tired of it.โ€ Isoldeโ€™s gaze softened. This girlโ€ฆ always thinking of me. โ€œQuiet now,โ€ she murmured.

After tending to Helena, Isolde retrieved Leonis. The poison had already passed through his resilient system, as expected. In my past, I knew Leonis could withstand most poisons. But that didnโ€™t stop him from meeting his end at the hands of the Duke of Eldermereโ€™s household. Carrying Leonis, she approached Mary. Isoldeโ€™s voice was glacial. โ€œLook at him. Acknowledge him. You did this to him.โ€
