Chapter 62: Calamity Approaches
Isolde, having attended to her shops, decided to visit Doug at Southern Watch.
โYouโre just passing by today?โ Doug raised an eyebrow. He had returned only a couple of days ago, and she was only now appearing.
โI came on purpose,โ Isolde said with a grin, stepping closer. She walked behind him and began massaging his shoulders, her small hands working diligently. โHow does that feel?โ
Doug closed his eyes and lazily replied, โNot bad. At least you havenโt lost your touch.โ
โHow could I lose it?โ Isolde added more pressure, her voice playful. โI came to bring you a special gift today.โ
Doug snorted. โKeep the good stuff for your father. I hope he doesnโt get too cruel with you.โ
โThis gift is for you,โ Isolde whispered something in Dougโs ear.
Dougโs eyes snapped open. โAre you serious?โ
โOf course,โ Isolde said. โIโve arranged everything. If you want to ask, feel free. Whatever you find, the evidence will be there.โ
Doug gave a small nod, appreciating her thoroughness. โYouโve become much more capable. But donโt rush it. Let him wander around a few more days. As for this, you shouldnโt be involved. These are things beyond your reach. If people catch wind of it, how many lives do you think you have?โ
โWho would dare offend me?โ Isolde chuckled. โAre you afraid of your own disciple?โ
โYouโre smart with those in your own house, so Iโm not worried about you.โ Dougโs gaze dropped, and a shadow of concern crossed his eyes.
โDonโt worry,โ Isolde said, tightening her grip. โEverything thatโs mine, Iโll take back. And if itโs not mine, Iโll make it mine if I want.โ
โHave you set your sights on William?โ Doug asked, his voice probing.
โNot interested.โ Isoldeโs face turned dismissive.
Doug said nothing but smiled faintly. He seemed pleased with her answer.
After a pause, Doug suddenly asked, โWhat about Oliver?โ
Isolde froze. โWhat?โ
โThe engagement arranged by Pabloโalthough Margaret called it off, that doesnโt mean itโs Pabloโs wish. Oliver is still his son.โ
Isolde frowned, her annoyance growing. โWhat are you getting at? Does your daughter have no suitors? Besides, Oliver is already betrothed, about to marry.โ
โWhether he marries or not is yet to be seen.โ Doug walked over to her, placing a hand on her arm, his tone full of meaning. โI canโt protect you forever, and you never know what your father might find for you. For you, there will be someone extraordinary. If youโre interested in Oliver, once Pablo returns, I can help with that.โ
Isolde shifted the topic. โThere are other things Iโm not involved in, but I want to be part of the Milton matter.โ
Doug raised an eyebrow. โWhy?โ
Isolde looked at him, her voice quiet but firm. โBecause I despise him.โ
โIs it worth it? Over the Montlins Manor issue?โ Dougโs tone was cold. โIโll handle it. Your father came to me asking for mercy, but I refused. This matter is personal for you, so Iโll deal with it. But you, Isolde, have no reason to get involved.โ
Isoldeโs heart tightened. It wasnโt just about Montlins Manorโit was personal. Milton had killed her in her past life. The hatred had been buried for too long, but it burned brightly now.
โI just want to be involved. Let me experience it,โ she pleaded, not revealing everything, but determined to have her way.
Doug didnโt respond immediately, but brought up the topic again. โYou still havenโt answered meโwhat do you think of Oliver?โ
Isolde thought for a moment before replying. โHeโs a man who stands tall.โ
Doug nodded in satisfaction. โSo, you do have a good impression of him?โ
โLetโs not talk about that. Letโs focus on the important matters.โ
Doug patted her hand lightly. โAlright, you should head back. Donโt come around Southern Watch too often. If you need anything, come find me at the house. Or, if you prefer, you can stay with me for a while.โ
โWhy?โ Isolde raised an eyebrow.
Doug gave her a pointed look. โSouthern Watch isnโt the place for women. If you keep showing up, what will others think? Your future mother-in-law is going to have her eyes on you. You need to be careful.โ
Isolde threw her hands up in mock surrender. โWhen did you start caring about what people say? And sheโs not my future mother-in-law.โ
Doug gave her a sharp glare. โIโve never cared about gossip. But when it involves you, we need to be cautious. This isnโt Windermount. Here, in Argentum, things are different. And my protection of you wonโt last forever.โ
Isoldeโs heart skipped a beat. โWhat are you talking about?โ
Doug met her gaze with a serious, almost sorrowful look. โYouโll understand one day. Go now.โ
Isolde paused, still determined. โIโll go, but I need to be involved in the Milton matter.โ
Doug sighed. โAlright. Iโll have Oliver take care of it.โ
As Isolde left, she ran into Oliver entering. Remembering Dougโs words, Isolde felt a little awkward. โOliver.โ
โCome to see Mr. Becker?โ Oliver asked gently.
โYes,โ Isolde replied.
โThen head back safely. Take care on your way,โ Oliver said before heading inside.
Isolde bowed and left.
Geoffrey returned home from Southern Watch later that day. After reading for a while, Harlan entered, delivering news. โGeoffrey, Xavier has arrived.โ
Geoffreyโs face flickered with concern. He quickly rose to his feet. โQuick, bring him in.โ He hadnโt seen Xavier in a while. Why had he come now?
Harlan led a man in, about fifty years old, dressed in simple robes. Geoffrey greeted him at the door and bowed respectfully. โMaster, please, come in.โ
Xavier Tanner gave a small smile. โGeoffrey, itโs been a while.โ
โIt has indeed,โ Geoffrey said, smiling, though his anxiety remained.
โIโve been well,โ Xavier replied, sitting down and gazing at Geoffrey with a penetrating look. โBut Iโm afraid you are not.โ
Geoffrey let out a deep breath. โI havenโt been well for half my life, so Iโm not concerned about it.โ
Xavier shook his head. โYou and Prunella were one heart, one soul. If you suffer, so does she in the afterlife. Her soul is disturbed. Thatโs why Iโve come to see you today.โ
Geoffreyโs face turned ashen. โWhat do you mean? Whatโs happened?โ
Xavier sighed deeply. โGeoffrey, Iโve warned you before. Your daughter, Isolde, is a soul that brings death. You must send her away. You didnโt listen, and now, as she returns, your house and your heart are unsettled. This disturbance is why Prunellaโs soul cannot rest. More than that, the Dukeโs estate might be on the brink of a great calamity.โ
