The Swordswoman’s Revenge Story after Rebirth
Chapter 71: William Courts Trouble
When Margaret returned to her room, William was much calmer. He sat in a chair, properly dressed, drinking coffee. Sarah had also been helped back to her room. Lily Dyer, Margaret’s maid, had already informed Sarah about what happened. Sarah arrived with a pale face.
Margaret didn’t blame Sarah. She only asked about her injury. “Is it serious? How did this happen?”
Sarah said, “You told me to go to Montgomery Chamber to get Mr. Valen, so I did. But before I arrived, a black cat jumped out of nowhere. I was so shocked that I sprained my ankle and fell. It was Mrs. Eleanor’s maid, Moriah, who carried me back to my room.”
“You’ve been tricked!” Margaret said coldly. “How could there be a black cat in the middle of the night?”
Sarah said hatefully, “I didn’t mean to fail this time.”
William was stunned. “Mother, what’s going on? How is it a trap? Why did Eleanor use a black cat to scare Sarah?”
Margaret looked at William. “Do you know why I asked you not to go over last night?”
William said, “I know. You don’t like Eleanor.”
Margaret said indifferently, “I don’t like her? I just don’t give a damn about her. It’s because she only recently had a miscarriage that you shouldn’t sleep with her so soon. If anything were to happen and she couldn’t bear children in the future, she’d be utterly useless.”
Margaret had never been so blunt, but she was probably extremely angry.
“So I made a big mistake tonight. I shouldn’t have done this,” William said shamefully.
“It has nothing to do with you.” Margaret looked at him reproachfully. “She drugged her room. No man could resist it. It’s just a small trick women use. You must get it. How can you fall for it so easily?”
William’s expression changed drastically. “You mean she set me up?”
“That’s right,” Sarah replied. “Mrs. Eleanor invited you for a meal, but Mrs. Margaret happened to see it. She was afraid something would happen, so she instructed me to get you to go back. Little did she know that I would be so shocked by the cat they arranged that I fell. That’s why they succeeded.”
“Eleanor,” William gritted his teeth, “I thought I hurt her. I didn’t expect her to be responsible for her own suffering. How did she become like this? In the past, I thought she was quiet and much better than Isolde.”
When Margaret heard this, her eyebrows twitched. “Don’t say that. Isolde isn’t any better.”
“In any case, Isolde is better than Eleanor.” William pondered for a moment and remembered Isolde’s attitude towards him. He frowned. “Isolde’s not good either. They’re all birds of the same feather.”
“Don’t mention Isolde again,” Margaret said in disgust.
Seeing Margaret losing her temper, William dared not say anything else. He was secretly furious. William fumed. Isolde doesn’t know what is good for her. I’d like to see who she will marry.
The doctor came to treat Eleanor. He prescribed a few medicines and left. Lily was outside waiting for him. “Mrs. Margaret wants to see you.”
The doctor followed Lily to the Dayon Room. Margaret stood and curtsied slightly. “Take a seat, please.”
The doctor bowed. “Mrs. Margaret, no need for that. I’ll leave after saying a few words.”
“How is Eleanor?” she asked. Margaret’s invitation for the doctor to sit was not sincere, but a show of politeness.
The doctor frowned and said, “She was already weak. Now that she’s further injured, she won’t be able to have children in the future.”
Margaret’s face was ashen, but she maintained her politeness. “Alright, thank you. Lily, send the doctor out. Double the consultation fee.”
Lily nodded, got the money, and sent the doctor out. She instructed softly, “Mrs. Margaret doesn’t want what happened in the family to get out.”
The doctor was tactful and took his payment. “Miss, don’t worry. I understand.”
After the doctor left, Margaret’s face darkened. “Get Samiyah to come tomorrow morning.”
William was furious. Now, no matter what the truth was, if word got out, outsiders would only say that he couldn’t wait to get into Eleanor’s bed and cause her infertility.
When Samiyah found out about this, she naturally didn’t dare to come over. She only ordered servants to send many supplements over and said she would visit Eleanor in a few days.
This matter would be over, but William got drunk and went to the Duke’s estate to look for Isolde.
Isolde had just returned from Paletein Manor when she saw William at the door. Isolde walked up and asked, “Why are you here?”
William turned around. His eyes were red with hatred. Even the servant beside him couldn’t stop him. William rushed over and stared at Isolde. “It’s all your fault. If it weren’t for you, all those things wouldn’t have happened at the estate.”
“So many things?” Isolde’s expression was calm as she stared at the man she had loved for five years. The more she looked at William, the more he felt like a coward. She asked, “Did someone die? Did the mansion collapse? If not, it’s not a big deal. You are the Marquis’s son. You shouldn’t fall apart over minor setbacks. If your resilience is this weak, how will you ever inherit the Marquis’s title in the future?”
“What do you know?” William didn’t expect Isolde to be so mean. His anger rose as he pointed at her and scolded angrily, “Eleanor can’t have children anymore because of you. Are you happy? You’ve always hated her because I didn’t choose you and was with her instead, right? I just don’t like you. You country bumpkin, you bitch!”
“Country bumpkin” and “bitch” were the most vicious curses William could think of.
Isolde smiled meaningfully. “She can’t have children? Of course, I’m happy. Why wouldn’t I be? Those with bad morals deserve retribution. You better don’t drink so much and watch your step. I’ll be even happier if you fall down and die.”
“You vicious bitch!” William’s chest was about to explode. He raised his hand to hit her.
Isolde moved her face closer to him. “Do you want to hit me? Look at how many people are watching. Go on, hit me. Let everyone see what a lowlife you are!”
William glanced around and indeed saw nearly a dozen onlookers standing outside. The Duke’s estate faced the street. If they quarreled at the door, it would definitely attract attention.
William was only half drunk. He couldn’t let go of his anger and didn’t know who to vent it on. He hated Isolde, so he came over without thinking.
Now that he saw there were people watching, he couldn’t stand to embarrass himself. He flew into a rage out of humiliation and said fiercely to those people, “What are you looking at? Get lost!”
Everyone was gossiping about him right before him.
Isolde sneered and strode into the estate. She ordered the servant to close the gate.
William said angrily, “Isolde, you’ll definitely regret it. Let’s see who wants a wild girl like you.”
The door closed slowly, shutting out William and his curses.
