Chapter 473

As she closed the door, Alicia's composure faltered. She couldn't, nor did she want to, hear the conversation within. Corey's words echoed in her mind; ever since his painting purchase, a fierce intent had burned in his eyes. Today's visit seemed focused on her. What did he want? Was it simply because she was with Caden? That seemed unlikely. Caden was too proud to relinquish such a significant advantage—he wouldn't give up his woman. But then again, anything was possible. Corey was relentless, and Caden had been preoccupied lately. If a woman could broker peace between them, perhaps it wouldn't be a terrible exchange. Would Caden even agree?

Lost in thought, Alicia barely registered entering the conference room. The sudden creak of the door startled her back to reality. Caden entered, alone. An unspoken tension settled between them. Her voice, quieter than intended, asked, "Is the discussion over?" Caden's gaze was intense, unreadable. The answer was clear, yet she felt compelled to ask, "Who did Corey want from you?"

The glass walls of the conference room offered a clear view of their conversation. Corey, about to leave, paused in the shadows, his gaze fixed on Alicia and Caden. Caden ignored him, focusing on Alicia's pale face and slightly contracted pupils. He couldn't discern fear from curiosity.

"He wants you," he said calmly.

Alicia jolted, as if a mental switch flipped. She narrowed her eyes. "Did you agree to the deal?" The tension in her almost cracking voice surprised even her.

"Why don't you ask me why he wants you first?" Caden countered.

"Because that sly fox would never tell the truth," Alicia retorted instantly. "Whatever excuse he gave you, it's a lie."

Caden's expression remained unreadable. "Now answer me," Alicia demanded anxiously. "Did you agree or not?"

Caden's gaze softened. "I wasn't expecting that question, Ms. Bennett. Aren't you supposed to be tough and independent? You refuse to be treated as a commodity. What right do I have to make such a decision on your behalf?"

Alicia blinked, noticing the amusement in his eyes. He was clearly amused. Relief washed over her, quickly replaced by a grumble. "Have you lost your mind, Caden? How can you tease me now?" She kicked him hard in the shin, earning a hiss.

"Always so feisty," he said. "Handing you over to Corey might not be such a bad idea after all. I'll just find someone more gentle and obedient."
