Chapter 559

"My uncle is blunt, but well-meaning," Caden explained. "As the eldest son, he can't afford to be gentle if he's to uphold the Ward family name." His mother's trusting nature, her deception by Jerald's facade, stemmed from his uncle's unwavering dedication. Raised with love and protection, his sister had suffered heartbreak as a result. No one felt that loss more acutely than he did.

For a moment, Caden's expression darkened. Alicia understood his internal conflict, but she wouldn't yield.

"Give me some time to calm down," she said evenly. "Pull over ahead, and I'll get out."

Caden continued driving, stopping only at a red light. "This won't resolve itself with time," he said. "Let's face it now. Let me handle it."

Alicia clenched her fists. "Caden, don't you understand? I don't want to go."

Her impatience frustrated him. "My uncle is family. Do you understand that?"

A surge of frustration overwhelmed Alicia. "What's there to understand? He's your family. What does that have to do with me?" she exclaimed.

Caden's gaze narrowed. "What does it have to do with you, you say?"

Alicia stood firm. "We're dating, not married. Why should I appease someone I dislike?"

Caden's grip tightened on the wheel. Alicia looked away, her voice calm, but her stance resolute. "I'm not going back today." It wasn't her obligation; he hadn't even mentioned marriage. And now, Caden sensed her lack of intention to marry him. The thought, initially inconsequential, sparked a slow burn of anger within him.

Despite her distress, he drove her to Joy Mansion. Stepping out, his tone was cold. "Are you walking, or should I carry you?"

Alicia met his gaze, her expression flickering with frustration, helplessness, and sadness before she looked away. He was right; powerful people were stubborn. He indulged her when pleased, but otherwise, it was his way or nothing—a breakup the consequence. The thought pained her.

She offered a faint sneer, lowering her eyes. "I'll walk."

Caden released her hand, yet he held it as they walked inside, his demeanor outwardly affectionate. Despite the outward closeness, a rift remained.

Dinner was served. Seeing Ciara, Alicia offered a soft smile. "Hello, Ciara."

Ciara smiled, patting the chair beside her. "Come sit here, Alicia."

Alicia nodded and walked over. Caden pulled out her chair.
